TLV3502
TLV3502 - 4.5ns Dual Rail-to-Rail Comparator | Texas Instruments
The Texas Instruments TLV3502 is a dual high-speed comparator featuring 4.5ns propagation delay, rail-to-rail input and output, and 2.7V to 5.5V supply operation in 8-pin SOIC and 8-pin SOT-23 packages, drawing only 3.2mA per channel.
A comparator is an analog IC that compares two input voltages and outputs a digital signal indicating which is higher. Within the signal chain, comparators bridge analog sensing and digital processing, converting analog thresholds into logic levels. The TLV3502 belongs to the high-speed comparator family, a subset of linear comparators in the broader analog-to-digital interface IC hierarchy.
Key features include the 4.5ns propagation delay, 6mV internal hysteresis for noise immunity, and an input common-mode range extending 0.2V beyond the supply rails. The push-pull CMOS output stage directly drives CMOS or TTL logic without an external pull-up resistor. CMOS inputs provide picoampere-level input bias current, ideal for high-impedance sources. Note that the dual TLV3502 has no shutdown function; shutdown is available only on the single-channel TLV3501.
Architecturally, the CMOS process delivers low power and high input impedance. The rail-to-rail input stage senses signals near either supply rail, critical in low-voltage designs, while the output sources and sinks current to drive capacitive loads. The device is specified from -40C to +125C.
Typical applications include zero-crossing detectors, window comparators, level shifters, high-speed signal conditioning in test and measurement equipment, PWM circuits, and high-frequency oscillators. The 3.2mA supply current also benefits battery-powered portable instruments.
For reliable design, bypass the supply with a 0.1uF capacitor close to the VCC pin and respect the input common-mode range to avoid output errors.
