ATMEGA3250-16AU Descripción general

The Microchip Technology ATMEGA3250-16AU is an 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 32 KB ISP Flash memory, 16 MHz maximum clock speed, and 54/69 general purpose I/O lines, housed in a 100-pin TQFP (14x14 mm) package. It operates from a 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply and includes 1 KB EEPROM and 2 KB SRAM.

A microcontroller is a single-chip computer that integrates a processor core, program memory, data memory, and peripheral functions such as timers, serial interfaces, and analog-to-digital converters. Within the semiconductor hierarchy, the ATmega3250 belongs to the AVR ATmega family of 8-bit microcontrollers, a subset of embedded MCUs used in industrial control, appliances, and instrumentation where moderate processing power and rich I/O are required without the cost of a 32-bit platform.

Key features include the advanced AVR RISC architecture with 131 powerful instructions, most of which execute in a single clock cycle, delivering up to 16 MIPS throughput at 16 MHz. The 32 KB Flash supports In-System Programming with read-while-write capability, enabling firmware updates in the field. A JTAG interface provides on-chip debugging and boundary-scan testing, a critical asset on dense 100-pin boards.

Technically, the device combines three flexible timer/counters with compare modes, internal and external interrupt sources, a programmable serial USART, SPI and TWI (I2C) interfaces, an 10-channel 10-bit ADC, and a programmable Watchdog Timer with internal oscillator. Five power-saving modes, including idle and power-down, support low average-power designs, and the core is manufactured in Microchip's high-density non-volatile memory process.

Typical applications include industrial automation controllers, HVAC and building control boards, point-of-sale and metering equipment, and consumer appliances that need many I/O lines. The 69 GPIO count and JTAG make it well suited for relay- and keypad-heavy boards.

When designing, note that the -16AU speed grade requires a 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply for 16 MHz operation; at lower voltages the maximum safe clock frequency drops, so verify the voltage-frequency curve in the datasheet before overclocking.

🏭

Industrial Automation Controllers

The ATMEGA3250-16AU fits industrial automation and machine-control boards that require many relay, sensor, and keypad connections: its 54/69 general purpose I/O lines and 32 I/O ports cover dense digital I/O expansion without external port expanders. The 16 MHz AVR core with 131 mostly single-cycle instructions provides deterministic interrupt response for sequencer and interlock logic, while the 32 KB ISP Flash with read-while-write supports field firmware updates during machine servicing. JTAG boundary scan verifies solder quality on the 100-pin TQFP, reducing production escapes on two-sided boards. Typical designs pair the MCU with an RS-485 transceiver over its USART for Modbus-style networking and use the 1 KB EEPROM to store calibration and recipe data through power cycles. The 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply matches legacy 5 V industrial logic levels directly, eliminating level-shifting.

🔧

HVAC and Building Control

In HVAC controllers, boiler management, and room-control panels, the ATMEGA3250-16AU offers the right mix of analog inputs, serial links, and low-cost integration. Multiple sensor channels connect to its ADC inputs (per the mega family datasheet feature set), while three flexible timer/counters with compare modes generate PWM outputs for damper motors and variable-speed fans. The 5 V operation tolerates electrically noisy HVAC cabinets better than 3.3 V parts, and the Watchdog Timer with its own internal oscillator provides autonomous recovery from software hangs - a standard requirement in building safety logic. The 2 KB SRAM handles PID state plus a small communication stack, and the 1 KB EEPROM retains setpoints and runtime hours across power outages. JTAG on-chip debugging shortens commissioning cycles where panel access is difficult.

🖥️

Metering and POS Equipment

Electricity, water, and payment-terminal boards benefit from the ATMEGA3250-16AU's balance of security, memory, and I/O. The 32 KB Flash accommodates metering firmware plus a communication stack over USART or SPI, and the 1 KB EEPROM stores tariff tables and cumulative counters with byte-level endurance suitable for frequent writes. Its JTAG boundary-scan capability is valuable for ICT testing of dense 100-TQFP assemblies in volume production, catching open solder joints that bed-of-nails fixtures can miss on fine-pitch parts. Five power-saving modes, including power-down, allow battery-backed meter boards to wake on interrupt, log a reading, and return to sleep, extending backup-battery life during outages. The 69 I/O lines drive keypads, displays, and pulse-counting inputs on a single MCU, reducing BOM count versus smaller parts plus port expanders.

📺

Consumer Appliance Control

Washers, dishwashers, ovens, and similar white goods need exactly what the ATMEGA3250-16AU supplies: dozens of I/O lines for buttons, heaters, valves, and motors, timers with PWM for motor speed control, and a robust 5 V platform. The three flexible timer/counters with compare modes drive triac-firing or motor PWM channels directly, and the internal oscillator option lets cost-optimized boards run without an external crystal when timing precision allows. The 16 MIPS throughput at 16 MHz comfortably runs menu logic, sensor filtering, and a display driver simultaneously. Because the Flash is In-System Programmable, manufacturers can update firmware through a service connector without unsoldering the MCU - important for products that see long service lives and mid-cycle feature updates. Industrial temperature rating supports uncooled appliance control boxes.

🔬

Test and Measurement Instrumentation

Bench instruments, panel meters, and data loggers use the ATMEGA3250-16AU where deterministic 8-bit control and rich peripherals matter more than DSP horsepower. The 10-bit ADC channels sample sensor and rail-monitor inputs, the USART and SPI/TWI interfaces stream results to displays, PCs, or external converters, and the 2 KB SRAM buffers measurement records between communication bursts. At 16 MHz the single-cycle core delivers precise bit-banged timing protocols that jitter-sensitive instruments sometimes require, while hardware timers offload gating and pulse counting. JTAG on-chip debugging is a particular advantage here: engineers can set breakpoints inside ISR-heavy measurement code and inspect the 32 working registers in real time. The 100-pin TQFP provides enough I/O for front-panel keypads, multi-range relays, and backlights on a single controller, simplifying layout and EMI management.

💡

Lighting and Motor Control Panels

Dimmer racks, stage-lighting consoles, and small motor-control panels exploit the ATMEGA3250-16AU's timer PWM channels and dense I/O. Compare-mode timer outputs generate phase-control or PWM drive signals for MOSFET half-bridges and triac stages, while other GPIO banks handle enable lines, fault-feedback inputs, and operator interfaces. The 5 V supply drives logic-level MOSFET gates directly in many designs, and the 16 MHz core executes closed-loop current or speed-control loops at kilohertz rates with headroom. The Watchdog Timer with independent internal oscillator enforces fail-safe shutdown of power stages if firmware locks - a key safety property in motor panels. Using the same 100-TQFP footprint across product variants (3250 for 32 KB builds, 6450 for feature-rich 64 KB builds) lets manufacturers share one PCB layout across a product family.

What is the maximum clock frequency and supply voltage of ATMEGA3250-16AU?
The ATMEGA3250-16AU runs at up to 16 MHz from a 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply, delivering roughly 16 MIPS with the AVR single-cycle-per-instruction RISC core. According to Microchip product data, the -16 speed grade requires the 5 V operating range for full-speed operation; at reduced supply voltages the maximum safe clock frequency decreases, so consult the voltage-frequency relationship in the manufacturer datasheet before designing at lower VCC.
How much Flash, EEPROM, and SRAM does the ATmega3250 have?
The ATmega3250 integrates 32 KB (16K x 16) of In-System Programmable Flash with read-while-write capability, 1 KB of EEPROM for non-volatile parameter storage, and 2 KB of internal SRAM. According to the Microchip product page, it also provides 32 general purpose working registers, so the core can operate on data without moving it through an accumulator, which shortens interrupt latency and tightens code timing.
Where to buy ATMEGA3250-16AU and what is the price?
The ATMEGA3250-16AU can be purchased from DigiKey (ships same day, in stock), Mouser, LCSC (listed in stock with pricing from approximately $7.57 as of 2026-09-17), and through XAIPART. Pricing references: LCSC shows a unit price of $7.5728 as of 2026-09-17; the tiers on this page scale from about $8.11 at quantity 1 down to $5.74 at quantity 1000. Always confirm live stock and lead time at checkout, as inventory for legacy AVR parts fluctuates.
What is the difference between ATMEGA3250-16AU and ATMEGA3250A-16AU?
The ATmega3250A is a later die revision of the same 100-TQFP AVR microcontroller with identical 32 KB Flash, 1 KB EEPROM, 2 KB SRAM, and pinout; 'A' parts typically carry process and errata refinements over the original die. The two are effectively drop-in compatible on the same PCB. According to Microchip's product family pages, new designs should normally use the 'A' revision, while the original ATMEGA3250-16AU remains in production and fully interchangeable for existing boards.
What is the best drop-in replacement for ATMEGA3250-16AU?
The closest drop-in replacement is the ATMEGA3250A-16AU, which uses the same 100-pin TQFP footprint and identical memory configuration. If more program space is needed, the ATMEGA6450-16AU is pin-compatible in the same package with 64 KB Flash instead of 32 KB. Both belong to the same ATmega mega3250/mega6450 family sharing the 100-TQFP pinout. Verify peripheral register differences against the family datasheet when porting firmware, but the PCB land pattern requires no change.
Can ATMEGA3290-16AU replace ATMEGA3250-16AU on my board?
The ATMEGA3290-16AU shares the same 100-TQFP package and family pinout as the ATmega3250, so it fits the same socket, but it is not a functionally identical substitute: the 3290 variant adds an integrated LCD controller/segment driver while the 3250 instead provides additional general-purpose functionality. If your board does not use those LCD-dedicated pins, the swap can work with firmware review. According to Utmel comparison data, both are 32 KB Flash 100-TQFP parts in the same mega3290/3250 family.
When should I choose ATmega3250 over ATmega2560?
Choose the ATmega3250 when you need a cost-effective 32 KB Flash 5 V MCU with many I/O lines and JTAG debugging, and when your board footprint is the mega3250/mega6450 100-TQFP layout. Choose the ATmega2560 when you need far more memory (256 KB Flash, 8 KB SRAM), more peripherals (four USARTs), or Arduino Mega ecosystem compatibility. Note the two are NOT pin-to-pin interchangeable despite sharing a 100-pin TQFP; the land patterns and pin functions differ, so this is a new-design choice, not a drop-in swap.
Does ATMEGA3250-16AU support JTAG debugging and boundary scan?
Yes. According to the Microchip product page, the ATmega3250 includes a JTAG interface for boundary-scan testing and on-chip debugging/programming. This is particularly valuable on dense 100-pin boards where visual inspection is impractical: boundary scan verifies solder joints, and JTAG debug via Atmel-ICE or JTAGICE tools allows breakpoint, watch, and flash programming access without removing the device from the board.
Where can I download the ATMEGA3250-16AU datasheet PDF?
The authoritative datasheet is available from Microchip's official product page at microchip.com/en-us/product/ATmega3250, titled '8-bit AVR Microcontroller with In-System Programmable Flash'. Third-party mirrors such as alldatasheet.com and datasheets.com also host the PDF, but always prefer the manufacturer site for the latest revision and errata sheet. The datasheet covers register maps, electrical characteristics, the voltage-frequency curve, and package drawings for the 100-TQFP (14x14 mm) option.
Is ATMEGA3250-16AU RoHS compliant and lead free?
The ATMEGA3250-16AU is supplied in Microchip's standard lead-free, RoHS-compliant TQFP finish (matte tin leads), consistent with the 'AU' suffix used for lead-free packaging across the AVR portfolio. Detailed RoHS, REACH, and halogen declarations should be confirmed on the Microchip product page or by requesting the official compliance certificate, as this page does not carry a per-lot compliance statement. Lifecycle status is listed as ACTIVE per distributor and datasheet aggregator data as of 2026-09-17.
Is ATMEGA3250-16AU the same as ATMEGA3290P-20AU?
No, they are not the same, although both are 32 KB Flash 8-bit AVR MCUs in a 100-pin TQFP. The ATMEGA3250-16AU runs at 16 MHz with a 4.5-5.5 V supply and no LCD controller; the ATMEGA3290P-20AU runs at up to 20 MHz and integrates an LCD segment driver, which changes how several pins are used. According to Utmel's comparison of the two MPNs, they belong to the same mega family and package but serve different applications, so a swap requires firmware and schematic review.
What are the key specifications of ATMEGA3250-16AU that engineers should know?
The ATMEGA3250-16AU is an 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller: 32 KB ISP Flash (16K x 16), 1 KB EEPROM, 2 KB SRAM, 16 MHz maximum clock, 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply, 54/69 general purpose I/O lines across 32 I/O ports, 131 mostly single-cycle instructions, JTAG for debug and boundary scan, USART/SPI/TWI serial interfaces, three timer/counters, and a 100-TQFP (14x14 mm, 0.8 mm pitch) industrial-temperature package. Lifecycle status is active per Microchip and distributor data as of 2026-09-17.
How do I program the ATmega3250 - ISP or JTAG?
The ATmega3250 supports both In-System Programming (ISP) via its SPI interface and programming/debugging via the JTAG interface. ISP is the standard production method: the SPI pins (MOSI, MISO, SCK, RESET) double as programming pins, allowing firmware updates with the device soldered on the board. JTAG additionally provides on-chip debugging, boundary-scan testing, and programming. According to the Microchip product page, the Flash supports read-while-write, so boot-loader based firmware updates over USART are also a common production programming route.
What is the lead time and stock situation for ATMEGA3250-16AU?
The ATMEGA3250-16AU is in stock and ships immediately at major distributors: DigiKey lists it with same-day shipping, and LCSC lists it in stock (price from $7.5728 as of 2026-09-17). XAIPART supports quote-based ordering with typical delivery aligned to distributor stock. Because this is a legacy AVR device, long-term production programs should maintain buffer stock or qualify the ATMEGA3250A-16AU as a second source on the same footprint to hedge against allocation periods.

Guía de selección

Choose ATMEGA3250-16AU when you need a proven 5 V, 32 KB Flash AVR with maximum general-purpose I/O (69 lines), JTAG debugging/boundary scan, and an active production status - ideal for industrial controllers, appliances, and metering boards already laid out for the mega3250 100-TQFP footprint. Choose ATMEGA3250A-16AU as a functionally identical, same-footprint second source or for new production builds to get the newer die revision. Choose ATMEGA6450-16AU when firmware has outgrown 32 KB - same pinout, double Flash and SRAM, no PCB change. Choose ATMEGA3290-16AU or ATMEGA3290P-20AU only if your board drives an LCD, since their segment controller replaces some general I/O; the P variant adds lower voltage operation and 20 MHz. Never treat the ATmega2560 as a substitute despite the shared 100-pin package - its pinout differs. Honest trade-off: this is a legacy 8-bit platform; for new designs needing CAN or higher integration, evaluate newer AVR or ARM parts, but for maintenance and mid-life upgrades of existing boards, the 3250 family remains the lowest-risk choice.

Notas de diseño

The -16AU speed grade requires a 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply for reliable 16 MHz operation; below this range the maximum guaranteed clock frequency falls per the datasheet voltage-frequency curve. Decouple every VCC/AVCC pin pair with 100 nF ceramics placed within 5 mm of the pins, plus one bulk 10 uF per board. Keep the analog supply pin fed through an RC or ferrite filter if the ADC is used, since switching noise from relay coils on the same 5 V rail directly degrades ADC accuracy.

On the 100-pin TQFP (0.8 mm pitch), use a land pattern per the Microchip package drawing and consider via-in-pad or dog-bone fanout for the dense perimeter. Route JTAG (TCK/TMS/TDO/TDI) as a short, daisy-chained group with series resistors if multiple JTAG devices share the chain, and reserve unpopulated JTAG connector pads even on cost-reduced boards - boundary-scan ICT on 100-TQFP assemblies routinely pays back its 0.2 uF bypass cost in escaped-defect reduction.

Common mistakes: (1) assuming ATmega2560 is a drop-in - it shares the 100-TQFP count but NOT the pinout with the mega3250 family; (2) using the mega3290 (LCD variant) as a substitute without remapping the LCD-shared pins; (3) exceeding EEPROM endurance by writing calibration data in every loop iteration instead of on change. Also verify RESET pin pull-up and that ISP programming lines (MOSI/MISO/SCK/RESET) are not loaded heavily by peripheral circuits, or in-circuit programming will fail.

For EMC on appliances and industrial panels, add 10-33 ohm series resistors on long GPIO runs driving cables, and use the internal pull-ups on unused pins configured as inputs, or drive unused pins as outputs low, to prevent floating-node EMI emissions. Keep the USART/TWI clock lines short and, on TWI buses longer than 30 cm, size pull-up resistors (typically 2.2k-4.7k at 5 V) to meet rise-time requirements at 100-400 kHz.
