ATMEGA168PA-MUR 概要

The Microchip Technology ATMEGA168PA-MUR is a picoPower 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 16 KB ISP Flash, 512 B EEPROM, 1 KB SRAM, and a maximum clock frequency of 20 MHz, supplied in a 32-pad VQFN (MLF) 5x5 mm package for industrial temperature ranges (-40C to +85C).

An 8-bit AVR microcontroller is a Harvard-architecture RISC processor that executes most of its 133 instructions in a single clock cycle. Within the power-management hierarchy, the ATmega family sits in the embedded microcontroller (MCU) class, integrating CPU, program memory, data memory, timers, and communication peripherals on a single die, making it a complete system-on-chip for cost-sensitive embedded control.

Key features include the picoPower technology for sub-uA power modes, 16 KB of self-programmable Flash with read-while-write support, a 10-bit ADC with up to 8 channels, and a rich peripheral set: one 8-bit and one 16-bit timer with compare modes, a 6-channel PWM engine, a serial USART, a byte-oriented Two-Wire (I2C-compatible) interface, and an SPI port. The advanced RISC core uses 32 general-purpose working registers fully connected to the ALU, achieving up to 20 MIPS throughput at 20 MHz.

Technically, the ATmega168PA is the picoPower refresh of the ATmega168A die, fabricated to reduce active and sleep-mode current. It operates from 2.7 V to 5.5 V and offers power-saving modes including Idle, ADC Noise Reduction, Power-save, Power-down, Standby, and Extended Standby, with on-chip brown-out detection, power-on reset, and an internal calibrated RC oscillator.

Typical applications include consumer appliances, industrial sensing nodes, battery-powered instruments, HVAC controls, and hobby/Arduino-class boards, where the combination of 5 V tolerance, low sleep current, and in-system programmability reduces total system cost.

For design, remember the VQFN pad-frame requires a grounded center paddle for thermal and signal return integrity; place 100 nF decoupling capacitors at both VCC/AVCC pairs.

ATMEGA168PA-MUR の用途: 6 件s: Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes, Industrial Control and Automation, Consumer Appliances, HVAC and Climate Control, Embedded Hobby and Maker Boards, Medical and Diagnostic Instruments.

🧩

Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes

The ATMEGA168PA-MUR fits battery nodes because picoPower Power-down mode reduces sleep current to the low-microampere/sub-microampere class while the watchdog or asynchronous Timer/Counter can wake the CPU periodically. The 10-bit ADC with 8 channels digitizes analog sensors directly without an external converter, and the internal calibrated RC oscillator removes the crystal from the bill of materials in non-timing-critical designs. Powered from 2.7 V to 5.5 V, it runs from two AA cells or a 3 V coin cell through an LDO. A typical topology sleeps in Power-down, wakes on timer or pin-change interrupt, samples the ADC, and transmits via USART or SPI radio; the trade-off is avoiding 20 MHz operation at low battery voltage per the voltage-frequency derating curve.

🏭

Industrial Control and Automation

In industrial controllers the ATMEGA168PA-MUR offers 5 V-tolerant I/O, brown-out detection, and a -40C to +85C industrial temperature rating, which simplify interfacing with relays, optocouplers, and 24 V-scaled signal conditioning. Its six PWM channels drive actuators, heater elements, or LED dimming directly, while the USART, SPI, and TWI interfaces connect to HMI panels, EEPROMs, and Modbus-over-RS485 transceivers. The 16 KB self-programmable Flash supports field firmware updates through a bootloader, reducing maintenance cost. Placed on a 5 V rail with 100 nF decoupling at both VCC pins and a grounded MLF paddle, it delivers up to 20 MIPS of deterministic RISC execution; designers should budget ISR latency carefully in fast closed-loop control and use the 16-bit Timer/Counter for precise PWM periods.

⚡

Consumer Appliances

Home appliances need inexpensive, robust control: the ATMEGA168PA-MUR supplies a full MCU with ADC, PWM, USART, and TWI in a 5x5 mm VQFN, keeping board area small in dishwasher, coffee machine, and climate-control boards. Its 2.7 V to 5.5 V range tolerates unregulated supply sag, the on-chip power-on reset and brown-out detector protect against brownout-induced firmware corruption, and 512 B EEPROM retains user settings through power cycles. Push-button interfaces use pin-change interrupts, and the 8-bit Timer/Counter handles buzzer or display multiplexing while the CPU sleeps in Idle mode to cut consumption. With unit pricing around the two-to-three dollar level, the total programmed-MCU cost stays low; the main consideration is ESD hardening of externally accessible I/O lines with TVS diodes.

🔧

HVAC and Climate Control

Thermostats and HVAC controllers benefit from the ATMEGA168PA-MUR asynchronous Timer/Counter, which keeps a real-time clock running in Power-save mode at microamp-level current between display updates. The 10-bit ADC reads NTC thermistors, humidity sensors, and supply-voltage dividers across up to 8 channels, while TWI connects external RTC or display controllers and USART supports UART-based diagnostics ports. The 23 GPIO lines drive relays, dampers, and multi-segment LCD or LED displays through driver transistors. Operating from a transformer-derived 5 V rail with brown-out detection at approximately 2.7 V, the design safely resumes operation after mains dips. Firmware should average ADC samples to reject 50/60 Hz mains coupling and use the internal 1.1 V reference for accurate thermistor conversion across the industrial temperature range.

📱

Embedded Hobby and Maker Boards

The ATmega168PA is a direct pin-compatible member of the Arduino Uno-class family, and the ATMEGA168PA-MUR in VQFN-32 suits compact maker hardware where the DIP-28 ATmega328P is too large. It accepts the standard Arduino bootloader via UART or ISP programming with AVR ISP mkII, PICkit 4, or Atmel-ICE, and the same SPI/ISP header layout used across ATmega48/88/168/328 boards works unchanged. Six PWM outputs, a hardware USART, and 23 GPIO lines cover servo, LED, and sensor projects, while 16 KB Flash hosts moderately sized sketches; designs that outgrow 16 KB simply reflow the pin-identical ATMEGA328P-MU onto the same PCB. Keep reset, MOSI, MISO, and SCK routed to a 2x3 ISP header for in-field reprogramming.

💊

Medical and Diagnostic Instruments

Portable medical devices such as glucose meters, blood-pressure monitors, and handheld diagnostic tools use the ATMEGA168PA-MUR for its combination of low sleep current, 10-bit ADC, and deterministic single-cycle RISC execution for signal timing. Battery operation from 2.7 V supports 3 V lithium cells, and picoPower modes extend shelf life between charging cycles; ADC Noise Reduction mode suppresses digital clock noise during measurement conversions, improving effective resolution on low-level sensor inputs. TWI connects calibration EEPROMs and OLED display controllers, while USART provides service interfaces. Because this device is not AEC-Q100 or medical-grade qualified as a component, safety-critical paths should add external supervision; the MCU handles measurement, UI, and communications within a system-level IEC 60601-compliant architecture designed by the instrument manufacturer.

What are the key specifications of the ATMEGA168PA-MUR that engineers should know?
The ATMEGA168PA-MUR is a Microchip picoPower 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 16 KB ISP Flash, 512 B EEPROM, 1 KB SRAM, and 20 MHz maximum clock (up to 20 MIPS). It operates from 2.7 V to 5.5 V over -40C to +85C and includes a 10-bit 8-channel ADC, USART, SPI, TWI, six PWM channels, and 23 GPIO lines in a 32-pad VQFN (5x5 mm) package. According to the Microchip ATmega48PA/88PA/168PA family datasheet, these parameters define its fit for low-power embedded control.
What is the supply voltage range of the ATMEGA168PA-MUR?
The ATMEGA168PA-MUR operates from a 2.7 V to 5.5 V single supply, per the Microchip datasheet. This means it supports both 3.3 V and 5 V systems directly. Note that maximum clock frequency derates at lower voltages: full 20 MHz operation requires approximately 4.5 V or above, while lower voltages support correspondingly lower safe clock frequencies, so verify the voltage-frequency curve in the datasheet before overclocking at 3.3 V.
What is the difference between ATMEGA168PA-MUR and ATMEGA168A-MUR?
The ATMEGA168PA-MUR is the picoPower variant while the ATMEGA168A-MUR is the earlier non-picoPower die. Both offer the same 16 KB Flash, 512 B EEPROM, 1 KB SRAM, 20 MHz rating, and identical 32-pad VQFN pinout, making them drop-in interchangeable. The key difference is power consumption: the PA version draws significantly less current in sleep and power-down modes, which matters most in battery-operated designs. According to Microchip, choose the PA suffix whenever low quiescent power is a requirement.
Is ATMEGA328P-MU a drop-in replacement for ATMEGA168PA-MUR?
Yes, the ATMEGA328P-MU is a superset drop-in replacement: it uses the same 32-pad VQFN (5x5 mm) footprint and identical pinout as the ATMEGA168PA-MUR, with the same 20 MHz, 5 V peripherals. The difference is memory: 32 KB Flash, 2 KB SRAM, and 1 KB EEPROM versus 16 KB / 1 KB / 512 B on the ATmega168PA. Existing firmware runs unchanged; you gain headroom. This makes the ATmega328P the standard upgrade path when Flash or SRAM overflow becomes a limit.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the ATMEGA168PA-MUR?
The best same-footprint drop-in replacements are other members of the ATmega48PA/88PA/168PA/328P family in the 32-pad VQFN package, since they share an identical pad frame and register model. For direct 1:1 equivalence, the ATMEGA168PA-MU (tape-and-reel vs. cut-tape difference only) and ATMEGA168A-MUR are nearest matches. For more memory in the same footprint, choose ATMEGA328P-MU; for less cost and memory, ATMEGA88PA-MU or ATMEGA48PA-MU, which need only Flash-size-specific linker settings.
Where to buy ATMEGA168PA-MUR online and what is the price?
The ATMEGA168PA-MUR is available from authorized distributors including DigiKey, Mouser, and LCSC. As of 2026-09-16, LCSC lists stock from approximately $2.72 per unit at quantity 1, with typical volume pricing falling to roughly $1.75 at 1000 pieces (see the pricing tiers on this page). Because the device is in active production, lead times are generally short; the 'R' suffix indicates tape-and-reel packaging for automated assembly, so confirm reel quantity when ordering for production lines.
What is the lead time and stock status for ATMEGA168PA-MUR?
The ATMEGA168PA-MUR is in active lifecycle status at Microchip Technology, and distributor pages (DigiKey, Mouser, LCSC) as of 2026-09-16 show it ships same-day from stock. Because it is a standard production part rather than a factory-order item, stock-driven lead time is typically 1-3 business days from authorized distributors; only very large volume orders requiring factory builds may need several weeks. Always confirm live inventory at your distributor before finalizing a production BOM.
Is the ATMEGA168PA-MUR suitable for battery-powered designs?
Yes. The ATMEGA168PA-MUR uses Microchip picoPower technology specifically targeting battery applications: it provides Power-down and Power-save sleep modes with current in the sub-microampere to low-microampere class (exact values per the datasheet power charts), an on-chip watchdog, and asynchronous Timer/Counter operation in Power-save for real-time clocks. Combined with the wide 2.7 V to 5.5 V operating range and internal RC oscillator, it can run directly from a 3 V coin cell through a regulator, making it a common choice for low-power sensing nodes.
ATMEGA168PA vs ATMEGA328P - which is better for my application?
Choose the ATMEGA168PA-MUR when your firmware fits within 16 KB Flash, 1 KB SRAM, and 512 B EEPROM and you want the lowest cost in the family; it is fully adequate for simple control, sensing, and UART tasks. Choose the ATMEGA328P when you need 32 KB Flash, 2 KB SRAM, or 1 KB EEPROM - for example larger Arduino-style sketches, buffers, or protocol stacks. Both are pin-compatible in the VQFN-32, so you can design one PCB and populate either depending on firmware size and cost targets.
Where can I download the ATMEGA168PA-MUR datasheet PDF?
The ATMEGA168PA-MUR datasheet is available on the Microchip Technology product page at microchip.com/en-us/product/ATmega168PA under Documentation, and is mirrored by distributor pages such as DigiKey and Mouser. The document covers the shared ATmega48A/PA/88A/PA/168A/PA/328/P family, so electrical characteristics apply across the family with per-device memory tables. Always download the latest revision from microchip.com rather than third-party mirrors to ensure you have current errata and DC characteristic data.
What is the pinout of the ATMEGA168PA-MUR in the VQFN-32 package?
The 32-pad VQFN pad frame follows the standard ATmega48/88/168/328 MLF-32 layout: ports PB0-PB7 (pins 12-17, 1-2, 7-8), PC0-PC6 (pins 23-29 with PC6/RESET on pin 29), PD0-PD7 (pins 30-32, 1-2, 9-11), power at pins 3/5 (GND) and 4/6 (VCC), AVCC on pin 18, AREF on pin 20, and ADC6/ADC7 on pins 19 and 22. Pin 7/8 serve XTAL1/XTAL2 for an external crystal. The full pin table appears in the diagram on this page.
Can the ATMEGA168PA-MUR be programmed in-system, and with which tools?
Yes. The ATMEGA168PA-MUR supports In-System Programming via its SPI interface (MOSI, MISO, SCK, RESET) and debug/programming through Microchip's AVR ISP mkII, PICkit 4, or Atmel-ICE tools within MPLAB X / Atmel Studio. It also supports self-programming from application code (Bootloader, read-while-write) which is how Arduino-class bootloaders load firmware over UART. Because ISP uses the same SPI pins as external flash programming, avoid driving those nets externally during reset, or add series resistors to isolate the programming header.
Is ATMEGA168PA-MUR RoHS compliant and lead-free?
Yes. Distributor and manufacturer data describe the ATMEGA168PA-MUR as a Green, RoHS-compliant, lead-free device; the MUR suffix indicates industrial temperature grade in the matte-tin VQFN package suitable for standard reflow assembly. REACH status should be confirmed on the Microchip product compliance page for your shipment lot. No AEC-Q100 automotive qualification is claimed for the ATmega168PA family, so for automotive designs select a qualified Microchip automotive MCU family instead.
Is the ATMEGA168PA-MUR the same as the ATMEGA168PA-AU?
No, they differ only in package. Both are the same picoPower ATmega168PA die with 16 KB Flash, 512 B EEPROM, 1 KB SRAM, and 20 MHz performance: the ATMEGA168PA-MUR is in the 32-pad VQFN (MLF, 5x5 mm) plastic package, while the ATMEGA168PA-AU is a 32-lead TQFP. Firmware, peripherals, and temperature range are identical, so porting between them is a layout-only change. The VQFN offers a smaller footprint; the TQFP is easier to hand-solder and probe.

選定ガイド

Choose the ATMEGA168PA-MUR when your application needs 16 KB Flash, 1 KB SRAM, industrial temperature, and the lowest achievable sleep current in a compact 5x5 mm VQFN - it is the sweet spot of the ATmega family for battery-powered 5 V or 3.3 V control. If firmware is projected to exceed roughly 14 KB Flash or 0.8 KB SRAM, design the same PCB for the pin-identical ATMEGA328P-MU (32 KB Flash, 2 KB SRAM) to protect against obsolescence of headroom. If cost dominates and firmware is small, drop to ATMEGA88PA-MU (8 KB) or ATMEGA48PA-MU (4 KB) with no layout change. Avoid ATMEGA168A-MUR (non-picoPower) for battery products; it is acceptable for mains-powered boards where price matters most. All five parts share the VQFN-32 footprint, enabling one PCB platform across the family.

設計ノート

The 32-pad VQFN (MLF) exposed die paddle on the ATMEGA168PA-MUR is not internally bonded to GND on all assembly variants - verify the datasheet paddle note, but best practice is to connect the paddle to a solid ground plane via a 3x3 via array under the part. This provides mechanical anchoring for reflow, thermal spreading, and a low-inductance return path. Use NSMD pads with approximately 0.3 mm aperture and 0.5 mm pitch per the package drawing, and design the stencil with roughly 50-70% paddle coverage to avoid solder voiding.

Decouple both VCC pins (4 and 6) and AVCC (pin 18) each with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 2 mm of the pin, plus one bulk 4.7-10 uF per supply rail. Tie AVCC to VCC through a low-pass filter (10 nH ferrite plus 100 nF) when ADC accuracy matters, and never leave AVCC unconnected even if the ADC is unused - the datasheet requires AVCC within 0.3 V of VCC. AREF should have a 100 nF capacitor to ground; only drive it externally when a precision reference is genuinely needed.

Three frequent ATmega168PA pitfalls: (1) PC6/RESET must not be left floating or pulled high weakly below the minimum reset threshold - use 10 kOhm pull-up plus a 100 nF cap from RESET to ground for robust power-on reset behavior with ISP headers. (2) ISP pins (PB3/MOSI, PB4/MISO, PB5/SCK) should have series resistors (e.g. 330 Ohm) if those nets drive external loads, so a programmer can override them. (3) At 3.3 V the safe maximum clock is roughly 13.3 MHz per the frequency-voltage curve - running 20 MHz crystals at low VCC violates the datasheet derating and causes marginal operation.

Estimated: at 5 V and 20 MHz driving nominal GPIO load, the ATMEGA168PA-MUR typically dissipates on the order of tens of milliwatts - with a theta_JA in the 40-50 C/W class for a 5x5 mm VQFN on a standard 4-layer board, the junction temperature rise above ambient is only a few degrees C, so no heatsinking is required. Thermal design only becomes relevant if many I/O pins source/sink near the 40 mA absolute-maximum pin current continuously; keep per-pin DC current within the datasheet 20 mA recommended rating.
