PIC24F16KA101-E/SS 概要

The Microchip Technology PIC24F16KA101-E/SS is a 16-bit microcontroller from the PIC24F XLP (eXtreme Low Power) family, delivering 16 MIPS performance at 32 MHz while consuming nanoWatt-class sleep currents. It integrates 16 KB of Flash program memory (5.5K x 24), 1.5 KB of RAM, and 512 bytes of EEPROM in a 20-pin SSOP package rated for the -40C to +125C extended industrial temperature range.

A 16-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a programmable processor that executes instructions on 16-bit data paths, offering higher code density and arithmetic precision than 8-bit parts while remaining simpler than 32-bit ARM Cortex-M devices. Within the broader taxonomy, this PIC24F belongs to the PIC24 MCU family, then to 16-bit microcontrollers, then to microcontrollers, then to embedded processors, and finally to integrated circuits. It is purpose-built for power-constrained and battery-powered designs where the XLP feature set (DSBOR, DSWDT, deep sleep, RTCC) extends battery life into the multi-year range.

Key specifications include a 32 MHz maximum operating frequency, 18 user I/O pins, a 10-bit ADC with multiple channels, and integrated peripherals such as comparators, UART/SPI/I2C, and a Real-Time Clock Calendar. The device operates from 1.8V to 3.6V and is qualified to the -E (extended) temperature grade. The 20-SSOP package provides a compact footprint well suited to space-constrained consumer and industrial modules.

Architecture-wise, the PIC24F core uses a 16-bit modified Harvard architecture with a wide 24-bit instruction word, enabling efficient C compilation through DecodeOne. XLP technology incorporates a deep sleep mode with sub-microamp current draw, an ultra-low-power watchdog timer, and a power-saving RTCC that can wake the part periodically - critical for energy-harvesting and primary-cell applications.

Typical applications include battery-powered sensor nodes, portable medical and wellness devices, remote controls, energy-harvesting wireless transmitters, low-power IoT end nodes, and industrial data loggers. The combination of wide operating voltage (1.8V-3.6V) and extended temperature range also suits automotive under-hood and outdoor installations.

When designing with this part, ensure decoupling capacitors are placed within 5 mm of the VDDCORE and VDD pins and that unused I/O are configured as outputs to minimize current draw. The XLP sleep mode requires the RTCC, DSWDT, or an external interrupt to be the wake-up source; relying on a busy-loop delay will defeat the nanoWatt current target.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing from DigiKey and Mouser, same-brand drop-in alternatives from the PIC24F family, and practical XLP design notes not consolidated in the manufacturer datasheet.

🧩

Battery-Powered Wireless Sensor Nodes

The PIC24F16KA101-E/18-SS is ideal for battery-powered wireless sensor nodes because its XLP nanoWatt technology achieves sub-microamp deep-sleep current, dramatically extending battery life to 10+ years on a single CR2032 coin cell. The 16 KB Flash (5.5K x 24) accommodates typical sensor protocol stacks like Bluetooth Low Energy profiles or proprietary sub-GHz MAC layers, while 1.5 KB RAM supports buffering of recent samples. Its 1.8V-3.6V VDD range lets the MCU run directly from a single Li-ion, alkaline, or coin-cell battery without a regulator, reducing BOM cost. The 32 MHz / 16 MIPS core easily handles periodic sensor reads and radio transmits within tight duty cycles, and the integrated 10-bit ADC captures analog sensor data without an external converter.

💊

Portable Medical and Wellness Devices

For portable medical and wellness devices such as pulse oximeters, glucose meters, and fitness bands, the PIC24F16KA101-E/18-SS delivers the low-power performance and analog integration required for battery-safety-critical products. The 10-bit ADC with multiple input channels directly digitizes sensor outputs from photodiodes, thermistors, or load-cell bridges, while the XLP deep-sleep mode keeps quiescent current below 1 uA so the device can sleep between measurements. The -40C to +125C extended temperature grade supports storage and transport across extreme conditions, important for outdoor and home-health devices. The 512-byte EEPROM safely stores patient calibration constants and usage logs through firmware updates, and the 18 I/O are sufficient to drive an OLED or segment LCD, read button inputs, and talk to a BLE module.

📱

Remote Controls and Consumer IR/RF Keys

The PIC24F16KA101-E/18-SS suits remote-control and consumer IR/RF key fob designs because its deep-sleep current of less than 1 uA lets a coin cell last the typical 5-10 year shelf and use life of such products. The 16 KB Flash comfortably fits complex button-mapping and IR/RF protocol code (NEC, RC5, or proprietary), while the 32 MHz core delivers the precise timing required for carrier generation. Its 1.8V-3.6V supply range matches a single CR2032 (3V) directly without a boost regulator. The 18 I/O easily drive a 5x5 key matrix plus LED indicators, and the integrated UART/SPI/I2C interface allows pairing with low-cost RF transmitter companions for RF remote control products.

⚡

Energy-Harvesting Wireless Transmitters

The PIC24F16KA101-E/18-SS is well matched to energy-harvesting wireless transmitters (solar, thermal, vibration) because its XLP deep-sleep mode draws under 1 uA, allowing the MCU to operate from tiny harvested energy reservoirs that would otherwise be inadequate for conventional microcontrollers. The wide 1.8V-3.6V VDD range accepts the variable output of a harvester without complex regulation. The 32 MHz CPU can wake, take a sensor reading, transmit a packet, and return to sleep within tens of milliseconds - critical for minimizing energy per wake cycle. The RTCC and DSWDT provide autonomous wake sources without external components, and the 18 I/O are sufficient for interfacing energy-harvesting power management ASICs.

🏭

Industrial Data Loggers and HVAC Sensors

The PIC24F16KA101-E/18-SS is a strong fit for industrial data loggers, HVAC environmental sensors, and building-automation nodes where the -40C to +125C extended temperature grade is required. The 512-byte EEPROM provides reliable storage for calibration data and rolling event counters without external memory. Its 10-bit ADC digitizes 4-20 mA loop sensors, thermistors, and 0-10V HVAC analog signals with adequate resolution for trend applications. The XLP feature set ensures maintenance-free operation for years on battery or solar power, and the UART/SPI/I2C peripherals connect directly to RS-485 transceivers, LCDs, or wireless modules.

🌐

Low-Power IoT End Nodes

The PIC24F16KA101-E/18-SS powers low-power IoT end nodes such as smart-home sensors, occupancy detectors, and BLE beacons because its XLP nanoWatt technology and flexible wake sources enable multi-year battery life without external RTC chips. The 16 KB Flash holds BLE beacon profiles or simple MQTT-SN payloads, and the 32 MHz CPU encrypts and transmits data within sub-second wake windows. The 18 I/O support driving LEDs, reading push-buttons or PIR sensors, and communicating over SPI/I2C with sensor peripherals. Its compact 20-SSOP package fits inside small sensor enclosures, and the wide operating voltage range accepts a USB-charged Li-Po cell or two AA batteries directly.

選定ガイド

Choose the PIC24F16KA101-E/SS when you need the largest 16 KB Flash in the 20-SSOP PIC24F XLP family with the -40C to +125C extended temperature grade for outdoor, industrial, or automotive-undershield deployments. Pick the PIC24F16KA101-I/SS if your application stays within -40C to +85C industrial grade and you want a slightly cheaper variant with identical pinout and die. Choose the PIC24F08KA101-I/P or PIC24F08KA101-E/P when 8 KB Flash and 1 KB RAM are sufficient and BOM cost matters more than code headroom. Choose the PIC24F08KL401-I/SS or PIC24F08KL301-E/SS when you want the newer KL family PPS peripheral pin select for remapping digital functions onto a wider range of physical pins. All six parts share the same 20-SSOP footprint, allowing PCB layout reuse across product variants. For non-battery-powered applications that do not require extended temperature, the PIC24F16KA101-I/SS is the most economical choice.

設計ノート

Estimated: with VDD=3.3V and MCU drawing 20 mA active, decoupling the VDDCORE pin with a 100 nF X7R ceramic placed within 5 mm is mandatory for PIC24F XLP parts. Connect a bulk 10 uF tantalum or ceramic at the VDD pin to handle PLL inrush. Decoupling loop inductance of more than 10 nH can cause spurious brown-out resets in deep-sleep transitions - keep traces short and wide. The VDDCORE pin must NOT be driven externally; it is the output of the internal LDO and only accepts a decoupling cap.

Configure all unused I/O as outputs (not inputs) to prevent floating-input current draw that can erase the XLP nanoWatt sleep budget. Floating CMOS inputs on the PIC24F can source or sink tens of microamps per pin, which completely defeats deep-sleep power targets. Also, after programming via ICSP, remember that the PGEC1/PGED1 pins default to analog mode and must be reassigned to digital I/O in user code if used as general-purpose pins.

Place the 32.768 kHz crystal as close to the SOSCI/SOSCO pins (or the chosen low-power oscillator pins on the 20-SSOP) as possible and guard the traces against noisy digital lines like PWM or switcher SW nodes. Route the ICSP clock and data lines PGEC1/PGED1 with no series resistors (10 k pull-ups to VDD are recommended per Microchip programming spec). Avoid running high-frequency traces parallel to the crystal traces to minimize coupling into the RTCC.

For ADC measurements on noisy power rails, add an external RC filter (typically 1 kohm + 100 nF) at the analog input pin to band-limit switching noise below the ADC's Nyquist rate. The PIC24F16KA101 10-bit ADC samples at up to 500 ksps; if the source impedance is above 2.5 kohm, the internal sample-and-hold will not settle within the acquisition window. Use the dedicated VDDCORE/AVSS pair for ADC reference, not the noisy digital VDD rail.
