ADC084S021CIMMX Overview
An SAR (Successive-Approximation Register) ADC is a type of analog-to-digital converter that uses a binary search algorithm through an internal DAC to converge on the input voltage in N clock cycles for an N-bit result. SAR ADCs sit hierarchically under the broader categories of data acquisition -> data converters -> mixed-signal ICs -> power management and signal chain semiconductors. They are favored for their deterministic latency, low power, and small package size compared to pipeline or sigma-delta converters, making them ideal for multiplexed multi-channel low-speed measurements.
Key features of the ADC084S021 include four single-ended analog inputs with an input voltage range of 0 V to V_A (the analog supply), 8-bit resolution with no missing codes, an integral nonlinearity (INL) of +/-0.2 LSB typical and +/-1 LSB maximum, and a signal-to-noise plus distortion (SINAD) figure above 49 dB. The serial interface operates up to 20 MHz at 5 V supply, and the part consumes only 1.7 mW at 200 ksps with a 3 V supply, dropping to microampere-level shutdown currents.
Technically, the ADC084S021 uses a charge-redistribution SAR DAC and an input sample-and-hold, achieving low aperture uncertainty and good common-mode rejection. The wide 2.7 V to 5.25 V supply range and SPI compatibility with virtually any microcontroller DSP or FPGA makes integration straightforward.
Typical applications include portable instrumentation, battery-powered sensor monitoring, process control loops, multichannel data loggers, and consumer audio/video equipment. Industrial temperature range of -40C to +85C ensures operation in factory and outdoor environments.
Designers should provide adequate decoupling on VA and VDR (digital reference) pins and route the analog inputs away from noisy digital traces; the SAR core offers deterministic conversion latency, so input multiplexing does not introduce timing jitter. For noise reduction, oversampling and averaging in firmware are recommended for high-precision measurements.

Typical Applications
ADC084S021CIMMX is suitable for 6 applications: Portable Instrumentation, Battery-Powered Sensor Monitoring, Process Control Loops, Multi-Channel Data Loggers, Consumer Audio/Video Equipment, White Goods and Home Appliances.
Portable Instrumentation
The ADC084S021CIMMX suits portable instrumentation because it consumes only 1.7 mW at 200 ksps with a 3 V supply, supports 2.7-5.25 V analog supply (drop-in for Li-ion cells above 2.7 V), and provides 4 single-ended inputs to scan multiple sensor outputs. With 8-bit resolution and 50-200 ksps throughput, it delivers adequate fidelity for handheld thermometers, multimeters, and environmental loggers while extending battery life.
Recommended
Battery-Powered Sensor Monitoring
The ADC084S021CIMMX is well-suited for battery-powered wireless sensor nodes because its 1.7 mW power consumption at 200 ksps with a 3 V supply enables multi-year battery life when combined with duty-cycled wake/sleep conversion cycles. Its SAR architecture provides deterministic conversion latency with no pipeline delay, simplifying firmware timing for energy-harvested sensor sampling. The 4 single-ended inputs allow direct connection to thermocouple amplifiers, photodiodes, and bridge sensors through front-end conditioning.
Recommended
Process Control Loops
The ADC084S021CIMMX supports process-control feedback loops where 4 process variables (e.g., temperature, pressure, flow, level) must be sampled at modest rates (50-200 ksps aggregate). The 0 V to V_A input range aligns with 4-20 mA loop receivers when paired with a 250 ohm shunt or with 0-10 V industrial signals when scaled to V_A. The SAR architecture guarantees no missed interrupts because conversions are deterministic, an essential property for closed-loop digital control.
Recommended
Multi-Channel Data Loggers
The ADC084S021CIMMX is ideal for multi-channel data loggers that sequentially sample 4 analog channels and store readings to flash or SD card. With a maximum 200 ksps aggregate throughput (50 ksps per channel for 4-channel sequential scanning), it supports 4-channel 8-bit logging at rates sufficient for vibration, thermal, and acoustic monitoring. Its compact 10-VSSOP footprint fits on small logger PCBs alongside an MCU and microSD card holder.
Recommended
Consumer Audio/Video Equipment
The ADC084S021CIMMX fits consumer audio/video front-end monitoring where the SPI interface can be shared with a microcontroller managing display, audio, and communication subsystems. With 4 input channels it can monitor supply rails, audio levels, or user interface potentiometers. Its 2.7-5.25 V supply range aligns with USB-powered, battery-powered, and mains-powered consumer devices without requiring a separate analog regulator.
Recommended
White Goods and Home Appliances
The ADC084S021CIMMX suits white goods and home appliances that require 4-channel analog monitoring of temperature sensors (NTC thermistors), humidity sensors, and front-panel potentiometers. Its industrial -40C to +85C temperature range supports refrigerator, oven, dishwasher, and washing-machine environments. The 4 single-ended inputs allow direct sensor multiplexing, while the SPI interface connects to a low-cost microcontroller managing the user interface and motor control.

Design Notes
Decouple VA (analog supply) and VREF (reference voltage input) pins with 0.1 uF ceramic capacitors placed as close to the IC pins as possible. Add a bulk 1-10 uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor at the supply origin. The ADC084S021 family is sensitive to analog supply ripple; if the same regulator feeds digital loads, use an LC pi-filter or separate LDO to keep ripple under 10 mV to preserve SINAD performance.
Route the analog input traces (VIN0-VIN3) as short as possible and away from noisy digital traces such as SCLK, DOUT, and CS. Use a continuous analog ground plane under the ADC and avoid splitting the ground plane between analog and digital sections. Place a 10 ohm ferrite bead or small resistor in series with the analog supply feed if the digital regulator switching noise is excessive.
The ADC084S021 input voltage range is 0 V to V_A - never apply negative voltages or voltages above V_A + 0.3 V to the analog inputs, as this can permanently damage the device. Ensure the CS line is held high (deasserted) when not in use to keep the part in shutdown; the chip only consumes full power when CS is pulled low and conversions are active.
The SCLK signal traces should be length-matched to within 1-2 cm to the DOUT trace to minimize timing skew and reflections. Place a small (22-33 ohm) series resistor at the SCLK driver if the bus is longer than 5 cm. Source-terminate DOUT if the receiving MCU is on a different PCB section; otherwise the default CMOS drive strength is sufficient for short traces on the same board.
When reading conversion results, ensure the SPI frame length matches the device's expected format - 16 SCLK cycles per conversion for the ADC084S021 family. Reading fewer than 16 clocks returns shifted bit patterns. The first 4 bits of the DOUT stream are zero-padded MSB alignment bits, then 12 bits of valid data (4 leading zeros, 8 result bits), and the trailing bits are zeros.
