ADS8472IRGZR Overview
An SAR (Successive Approximation Register) ADC is a converter topology that performs a binary search against the input voltage using an internal capacitive DAC and a comparator. Compared with pipeline or delta-sigma converters, SAR architectures deliver single-cycle latency, deterministic response, and excellent dynamic performance at moderate sampling rates (kHz-to-low-MHz), making them ideal for multiplexed data-acquisition systems, industrial control loops, and instrumentation front-ends.
Key features include true-differential inputs that reject common-mode noise, an internal low-drift 4.096-V reference that eliminates an external reference IC, ±5 V analog supply operation with a dedicated digital supply pin, and a hardware BYTE/WORD pin for bus-width selection. The SAR core achieves 1-MSPS throughput while the integrated reference and input driver maintain DC accuracy across the rated industrial temperature range.
Typical applications include industrial process-control analog input modules, multi-channel data-acquisition systems, precision weigh scales, optical-module monitoring, and motor-control feedback sampling. The pseudo-bipolar differential input accepts ±5 V (or 0 V to +5 V) true-differential signals, allowing direct connection to bridge sensors and current-sense amplifiers without extra signal conditioning.

Typical Applications
ADS8472IRGZR is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial Process-Control Analog Input Modules, Multi-Channel Data-Acquisition Systems, Precision Weigh-Scale and Load-Cell Front-Ends, Optical Module Bias Monitoring and Feedback, Motor-Drive Current and Voltage Sampling, Battery-Management and Cell-Monitoring Systems.
Industrial Process-Control Analog Input Modules
The ADS8472IRGZR fits isolated process-control input modules by offering 16-bit, 1-MSPS SAR conversion with an internal 4.096-V reference. Its pseudo-bipolar differential input rejects common-mode ground shifts typical of long sensor cables in plant floors. Placed after a front-end instrumentation amp, the converter sustains deterministic single-cycle latency required by closed-loop PID control. Compared with delta-sigma alternatives, the SAR architecture removes digital-filter latency that would otherwise destabilize multi-axis positioning loops.
Recommended
Multi-Channel Data-Acquisition Systems
Multi-channel DAQ backplanes use the ADS8472IRGZR to digitize multiplexed analog signals at 1 MSPS per channel. The parallel 16-bit (or 8-bit byte) interface delivers data directly into an FPGA or MCU without DMA stalls, while the integrated 4.096-V reference scales cleanly across the input common-mode range. The 48-VQFN package keeps per-channel board area small, allowing dense multiplexer + ADC + isolator stacks on a single backplane.
Recommended
Precision Weigh-Scale and Load-Cell Front-Ends
Weigh-scale and load-cell signal chains leverage the ADS8472IRGZR's 16-bit SAR resolution and true-differential input. The internal 4.096-V reference pairs with bridge sensors to give a direct scale to ADC scale ratio, while 1-MSPS throughput allows time-division multiplexing of multiple load cells around a single converter. Ground-noise rejection inherent to the differential front-end lets design engineers keep PCB copper short and reduce cable shielding cost.
Recommended
Optical Module Bias Monitoring and Feedback
Optical transmit modules (SFP, QSFP) use the ADS8472IRGZR to monitor laser-bias current and back-facet photodiode voltage for closed-loop APC. The SAR converter's single-cycle latency preserves timing margin in Mach-Zehnder and directly-modulated laser controls, while the 4.096-V reference covers the +/-2 V photodiode swings when buffered. The 48-VQFN footprint fits inside the small module cage area alongside the laser driver and TEC controller.
Recommended
Motor-Drive Current and Voltage Sampling
Servo and variable-frequency drives sample current-shunt and DC-bus voltages through the ADS8472IRGZR. The 1-MSPS update rate synchronizes with PWM carriers up to 16 kHz, capturing overcurrent events within 1 us of occurrence. The differential input accepts +/-VREF swings from bidirectional current-sense amps and eliminates ground-loops that would corrupt low-side shunt measurements at high di/dt.
Recommended
Battery-Management and Cell-Monitoring Systems
In Li-ion and industrial battery stacks, the ADS8472IRGZR serves as the cell-voltage ADC with built-in 4.096-V reference covering the 0-5 V cell measurement range. Multiple series cells are multiplexed into one converter, and the SAR's deterministic latency keeps the management MCU's state machine timing predictable. Industrial -40 to +85 C rating supports automotive under-hood and grid-storage deployments.

Design Notes
The ADS8472IRGZR requires that REFEN be tied high to enable the internal 4.096-V reference; if REFEN is left floating or tied low, the reference shuts down and conversions will be non-functional. Decouple the +5V VA supply close to pins 2, 10, 46, and 48 with 10uF + 0.1uF ceramic capacitors to keep the SAR comparator supply clean. When driving the differential inputs from a single-ended source, bias the IN- pin to VA/2 using a low-noise buffer; failing to do so collapses the common-mode and degrades THD.
Keep the analog ground plane unbroken under and around the ADS8472IRGZR. Place the AGND pins directly to the analog plane via short, wide traces. Route parallel digital data bus lines away from IN+/IN- and the CAP1/CAP2 reference pins; use a logical split between the AGND and DGND planes at a single point near the converter. The exposed thermal pad must be soldered to a copper pour on the top layer for thermal relief even at moderate duty cycles.
Estimated: at 1-MSPS output drive, the 16-bit parallel bus toggles every 1 us and creates ~3.2 ns edges on the DGND return. Source-terminate DB15..DB0 with 22-33 ohm series resistors close to the ADS8472IRGZR if the bus length exceeds 50 mm to limit ringing. Add a small ferrite bead between VA and VD at the PCB entry to keep ADC clock harmonics from leaking back into the analog supply.
