ISL26708IHZ-T7A Overview
A SAR ADC is a type of analog-to-digital converter that uses a binary-search algorithm through an internal capacitive DAC to successively approximate the input voltage against a precision reference. SAR ADCs offer the best combination of throughput, latency, and power consumption for multiplexed data acquisition, motor control, and instrumentation front-ends where a single conversion result must be captured per trigger without the pipeline delay of higher-speed architectures.
Key features of the ISL26708IHZ-T7A include 1 MSPS minimum throughput, no missing codes at 8-bit resolution, low power consumption (approximately 8.5 mW at 1 MSPS with 5V supply), a SPI/QSPI/MICROWIRE-compatible serial interface, and a true-differential analog input that supports ±VREF common-mode. An external reference voltage (1V to 5V) sets the input full-scale range, giving designers flexibility to optimize dynamic range.
The robust input structure, wide supply tolerance, and small SOT-23-8 footprint make the ISL26708IHZ-T7A well-suited for portable instrumentation, industrial process control loops, sensor signal conditioning, and battery-monitoring front-ends. Its differential input rejects common-mode noise present in long sensor cable runs.
When designing with this device, place the 0.1 uF and 10 uF decoupling capacitors as close as possible to the AVDD and DVDD pins to ensure conversion accuracy, and route the analog and digital ground returns to a single-point star ground near the ADC's GND pin to avoid digital switching noise coupling into the analog input.

Typical Applications
ISL26708IHZ-T7A is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial Process Control Sensor Front-End, Battery Management Monitoring, Portable Instrumentation Data Acquisition, Motor Control Current Sensing, Audio Signal Digitization, IoT Sensor Node ADC.
Industrial Process Control Sensor Front-End
The ISL26708IHZ-T7A's fully-differential input rejects common-mode noise present on long sensor cable runs in factory environments, while its 1 MSPS throughput supports fast process-control loop times. The device operates from 2.7V to 5.25V, accepting either 3.3V or 5V sensor rails. The wide industrial -40C to +85C temperature range and 8-bit resolution are appropriate for monitoring strain-gauge bridges, thermocouples, and 4-20 mA loop receivers where high dynamic range is unnecessary but reliable conversion is essential.
Recommended
Battery Management Monitoring
The ISL26708IHZ-T7A's low power consumption of 8.5 mW at 1 MSPS makes it suitable for battery-cell voltage monitoring in multi-cell battery packs. The differential input tolerates ground-shift noise between stacked cells, and the SPI-compatible serial interface requires only 3 microcontroller GPIO pins. The 8-bit resolution provides 20 mV steps on a 5V reference, sufficient for battery state-of-charge estimation in consumer and light-industrial battery management systems.
Recommended
Portable Instrumentation Data Acquisition
The ISL26708IHZ-T7A's small SOT-23-8 footprint and low 8.5 mW power dissipation make it ideal for handheld multimeters, portable oscilloscopes, and field-test instruments. The 1 MSPS throughput enables capture of audio-bandwidth and low-RF signals, while the differential input rejects hum pickup on probe leads. An external 2.5V or 5V reference can be selected to trade input range for absolute accuracy depending on the measurement being made.
Recommended
Motor Control Current Sensing
In brushless-DC and stepper motor drives, the ISL26708IHZ-T7A digitizes shunt-resistor voltage drops with 1 MSPS throughput for current-loop control. The differential input accepts the bipolar voltage across a low-side or high-side shunt, and the fast conversion rate supports PWM frequencies up to 50 kHz with 20 samples per PWM cycle. The SOT-23-8 package allows placement close to the shunt resistor for noise immunity.
Recommended
Audio Signal Digitization
The ISL26708IHZ-T7A's 1 MSPS sampling rate supports audio-bandwidth digitization up to 40 kHz with Nyquist-compliant sampling. The 8-bit resolution is sufficient for voice-band applications, simple audio mixers, and consumer audio effects. The differential input accepts line-level audio signals directly when paired with a 2.5V reference, eliminating the need for an external instrumentation amplifier in cost-sensitive designs.
Recommended
IoT Sensor Node ADC
The ISL26708IHZ-T7A's serial SPI interface and small SOT-23-8 footprint suit it to space-constrained IoT sensor nodes reading temperature, light, or gas-sensor analog outputs. Power-down current between conversions drops the consumption to microamp levels, enabling battery lifetimes of years on coin cells. The 8-bit resolution is adequate for threshold-based alerts and coarse measurements where the MCU performs additional digital filtering.

Key Differentiators
- True fully-differential input (vs Single-ended SAR ADCs in SOT-23 packages)

- Wide 2.7V to 5.25V supply range (vs 3.3V-only competitor ADCs)
Design Notes
Place a 0.1 uF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the AVDD pin (pin 1), with a 10 uF tantalum or ceramic bulk capacitor within a few millimeters. The DVDD pin typically shares the same supply but benefits from its own 0.1 uF bypass cap to isolate digital switching noise from the analog supply. Star-ground the analog and digital returns to the GND pin (pin 5) to prevent digital return currents from flowing through the analog ground reference.
Route the differential analog inputs (IN+ and IN-, pins 3 and 4) as a matched-length, matched-impedance pair to preserve common-mode rejection at high frequencies. Keep the analog input traces away from the serial interface lines (SDO, SCLK, CNVT) and from switching power converters. Place the external reference decoupling capacitor (typically 10 uF) directly at the REF pin (pin 2) with a short, low-inductance trace to GND.
Do not leave the CNVT pin (pin 8) floating - it must be driven high or low by the host microcontroller. Failing to fully decouple AVDD will result in degraded INL/DNL and reduced SNR. The external reference voltage (REF) sets the input full-scale range: VFS = 2 x VREF for differential inputs. Exceeding VREF + 0.3V on the analog inputs will damage the device. The serial clock SCLK should not exceed 20 MHz.
