MAX196ACAI Overview

The Maxim Integrated MAX196ACAI is a 12-bit, 6-channel, multi-range data-acquisition system (DAS) with 12-bit parallel bus interface, sampling at up to 100 kSPS and housed in a 28-pin SSOP (5.3 mm body width) package. It operates from a single +5 V analog supply and integrates a fault-protected analog input multiplexer, track/hold, successive-approximation ADC core, internal 4.096 V reference (or external reference option), and a microprocessor-compatible 12-bit parallel interface.

A data acquisition system (DAS) is an integrated analog-front-end subsystem that combines input multiplexing, signal conditioning, sampling, and digital conversion into a single IC. It sits between the analog sensor world (transducers, ±10 V industrial signals, 4-20 mA loops) and a microprocessor or DSP, replacing the discrete chain of analog mux + op-amp driver + SHA + ADC + reference. The MAX196 belongs to the broader category of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and more specifically to multi-channel DAS ICs optimized for industrial-control front ends.

Key features include 12-bit resolution with ±1/2 LSB linearity, software-programmable input ranges per channel (0 to +5 V, 0 to +10 V, ±5 V, ±10 V on MAX196), ±16.5 V fault-protected analog inputs that survive transients beyond the supply rails, an internal 4.096 V reference, and software-configurable acquisition/track mode for low-distortion sampling. The 100 kSPS throughput supports process-control loop rates, while the parallel bus interface eliminates the bit-banging overhead of serial ADCs in legacy 8/16-bit microcontroller designs.

Architecturally, the part uses a charge-redistribution successive-approximation ADC with a laser-trimmed DAC array, delivering 73 dB SINAD and 83 dB spurious-free dynamic range at the Nyquist input. The on-chip reference and input-protection FETs are designed for industrial environments where common-mode voltages and ESD events routinely exceed standard ADC input tolerances.

Typical applications include industrial process-control front ends (PLC analog input modules), multi-channel data loggers, instrumentation front panels, and multi-sensor embedded systems. Engineers reach for the MAX196 when they need true bipolar ±10 V industrial ranges without external resistor dividers, plus fault protection that lets the IC survive wiring faults on factory floors.

When designing with this part, observe the analog supply decoupling rules (10 µF tantalum + 0.1 µF ceramic close to AV+ pin) and place a 0.1 µF bypass on the +5 V logic supply. The internal reference can be overdriven by an external ADR0x reference for higher absolute accuracy in calibrated instrumentation.

Typical Applications

MAX196ACAI is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial PLC Analog Input Module, Multi-Channel Data Logger, Process Control Front End, Instrumentation Front Panel, Multi-Sensor Embedded System, Medical Patient Monitor.

🏭

Industrial PLC Analog Input Module

The MAX196ACAI is a strong fit for industrial PLC analog input modules because it integrates six software-selectable input ranges (0 to +5 V, 0 to +10 V, ±5 V, ±10 V) on a single +5 V supply, eliminating the need for external resistor divider networks and ±15 V rails. Its ±16.5 V fault-protected analog inputs survive field wiring faults, ESD strikes, and miswired transducer loops that routinely destroy unprotected ADCs. Six channels at 100 kSPS aggregate (≈ 10 kSPS per channel in round-robin) provides sub-millisecond loop update rates sufficient for industrial PID control. Place the IC after a per-channel R-C lowpass filter (typically 1 kΩ + 1 nF for 50 kHz cutoff) and TVS diode clamps for IEC 61000-4-2/4 ESD/surge compliance.

🖥️

Multi-Channel Data Logger

Multi-channel data loggers for HVAC, environmental monitoring, and laboratory instrumentation benefit from the MAX196ACAI's six 12-bit channels and internal 4.096 V reference that gives 1 mV per LSB resolution in unipolar mode. The 100 kSPS aggregate throughput lets the logger sample 6 channels at 16 kSPS each, comfortably exceeding the 100 Hz typical environmental sensor bandwidth. The parallel 12-bit bus interfaces directly to legacy 8-bit microcontrollers (8051, PIC16/18) without bit-banging overhead. Use the INTREF pin grounded with an external ADR01/ADR02 reference for higher absolute accuracy in calibrated scientific instruments.

🏭

Process Control Front End

Process control front ends for chemical plants, refineries, and water-treatment facilities typically require ±10 V inputs to interface with legacy 4-20 mA loop-powered transducers. The MAX196ACAI accepts these bipolar signals directly without external signal conditioning, simplifying the analog chain. Its fault-protected inputs survive the inductive kickback from solenoid coils and motor starters common in plant environments. Six channels suffice for typical skid-mounted analyzer cabinets; for larger systems, multiple MAX196s can be paralleled via CS pin decoding. The 73 dB SINAD at Nyquist delivers effective-number-of-bits (ENOB) > 11 bits, sufficient for process-control loop stability.

📺

Instrumentation Front Panel

Bench-top instrumentation such as oscilloscope front-end digitizers, spectrum-analyzer IF digitizers, and multi-meter digitizer boards can use the MAX196ACAI as the analog front end for its 100 kSPS aggregate throughput and per-channel range flexibility. The internal track/hold with 30 ns acquisition time captures transient signals from pulse generators and arbitrary waveform sources. The 12-bit resolution provides 4096 quantization levels, sufficient for basic bench-top measurements; pair with an external THP-2 front-end amplifier for gain ranging. The 28-SSOP package allows compact PCB layouts in 3U PXI/PCI digitizer cards.

🧩

Multi-Sensor Embedded System

Embedded systems with multiple analog sensors (temperature, pressure, strain gauge, flow) benefit from the MAX196ACAI's six channels sharing a single ADC, reducing BOM cost and PCB area versus six discrete single-channel ADCs. The software-programmable input ranges per channel let the same IC handle a mix of 0-10 V pressure transducers and ±5 V strain-gauge bridges. The parallel bus interface pairs well with mid-range microcontrollers (ARM7, Cortex-M3) without DMA overhead. Use the internal 4.096 V reference to simplify power design in battery-powered sensor nodes, or switch to an external ADR0x reference for thermally stable measurements.

💊

Medical Patient Monitor

Medical patient monitors (bedside multi-parameter monitors, ECG, SpO2, NIBP) use the MAX196ACAI for low-speed multi-channel digitization of vital signs. The 100 kSPS aggregate easily handles ECG (typically 500 Hz per channel), SpO2 photoplethysmography (1 kHz), and respiration (100 Hz) channels simultaneously. The parallel bus interface avoids the timing overhead of SPI-controlled ADCs, critical for synchronized multi-lead ECG acquisition. Designers must add external isolation (digital isolators between ADC and host MCU) and EMI filtering to meet IEC 60601-1 medical equipment safety standards. Note that this part is commercial temperature grade; for medical-grade designs, verify the extended-temperature MAX196AEAI+ meets the manufacturer's quality system requirements.

What is the resolution and sampling rate of the MAX196ACAI?
The MAX196ACAI is a 12-bit successive-approximation ADC with a maximum sampling rate of 100 kSPS across its 6 analog input channels. According to the Maxim Integrated datasheet (rev 3, 1995), the device achieves ±0.5 LSB integral nonlinearity and 73 dB SINAD at the Nyquist input, making it suitable for 12-bit industrial data-acquisition front ends where one-shot multi-channel conversion latency must stay below 10 microseconds per channel.
What input voltage ranges does the MAX196ACAI support?
The MAX196ACAI supports four software-programmable unipolar/bipolar input ranges per channel: 0 to +5 V, 0 to +10 V, ±5 V, and ±10 V. The input range is set via internal DAC-controlled scaling, so no external resistor divider network is required. Each of the 6 channels can be configured independently, simplifying mixed-signal industrial front ends where some inputs are 4-20 mA shunts and others are ±10 V transducer outputs.
What is the operating supply voltage of the MAX196ACAI?
The MAX196ACAI operates from a single +5 V analog supply (AV+) and a separate +5 V digital supply (DV+) for noise isolation. Both supplies typically share the same +5 V rail on board, but each must be locally decoupled with a 10 µF tantalum and 0.1 µF ceramic combination per the Maxim datasheet. The part does not require a negative supply despite supporting bipolar ±10 V input ranges; bipolar operation is handled internally.
Does the MAX196ACAI have fault-protected analog inputs?
Yes, the MAX196ACAI analog inputs are fault-protected to ±16.5 V continuously, well beyond the +5 V supply rails. This means the IC will survive wiring faults, ESD events, and miswired field signals that would destroy a typical ADC. The fault protection is implemented with on-chip overvoltage clamps on the input multiplexer, making the part especially attractive for PLC analog-input modules and factory-floor instrumentation where transients are common.
What is the difference between MAX196ACAI and MAX196AEAI?
Both the MAX196ACAI and MAX196AEAI share the same 28-pin SSOP package, 12-bit resolution, 6 channels, and 100 kSPS sampling rate, but the 'C' suffix denotes commercial temperature range (0°C to +70°C) while the 'E' suffix denotes extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). The MAX196AEAI+ is the drop-in replacement for designs that need to operate outdoors or in unheated enclosures. The ACWI+ variant uses the wider 28-pin SOIC package, not SSOP, and therefore is not pin-to-pin compatible with the ACAI.
Can MAX196AEAI+ replace MAX196ACAI?
Yes, the MAX196AEAI+ is a drop-in replacement for the MAX196ACAI; both share the 28-pin SSOP footprint, 12-bit resolution, 6 channels, 100 kSPS, and ±10 V input ranges. The AEAI+ adds an extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C) compared to the ACAI's commercial 0°C to +70°C. In production designs where wider temperature coverage is acceptable, the AEAI+ is interchangeable without PCB rework and is often stocked in higher volume at distributors.
Where can I download the MAX196ACAI datasheet PDF?
The official MAX196ACAI datasheet PDF is hosted on the Maxim Integrated / Analog Devices product page at https://www.analog.com/en/products/MAX196.html. Mirror copies are also available at https://www.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/pdf/73009/MAXIM/MAX196ACAI.html and https://digchips.com/datasheets/parts/datasheet/2/280/MAX196ACAI_.php. The datasheet includes functional diagrams, timing specifications, and the recommended analog-input protection circuit for industrial environments.
What is the MAX196ACAI pinout for the 28-SSOP package?
The 28-SSOP pinout assigns pins 1-6 to the six analog inputs AIN1-AIN6, pin 7 to AGND, pin 8 to INTREF/EXTREF (reference select), pin 9 to REF (4.096 V reference output), pin 10 to VREF (reference input), pins 11-14 to the parallel data outputs D11-D8, pin 15 to DGND, pins 16-19 to D7-D4, pins 20-23 to D3-D0, pin 24 to RD (read), pin 25 to WR (write), pin 26 to CS (chip select), pin 27 to INT (interrupt), and pin 28 to AV+ (+5 V analog). This follows the standard Maxim multi-channel DAS pinout convention.
What is the internal reference voltage of the MAX196ACAI?
The MAX196ACAI integrates a 4.096 V internal bandgap reference with ±1% initial accuracy. For higher absolute accuracy in calibrated instrumentation, the internal reference can be overdriven by an external low-impedance reference connected to the REF pin while grounding INTREF. The 4.096 V reference conveniently scales so that 1 LSB equals exactly 1 mV in the unipolar 0 to +4.096 V mode and 2 mV in the bipolar ±4.096 V mode, simplifying software calibration constants.
Is MAX196ACAI still in production or is it obsolete?
As of October 2026, the MAX196ACAI is still listed as active on the Maxim Integrated / Analog Devices product page. The part is widely stocked at major distributors including DigiKey and Mouser, with the 'plus' version (MAX196ACAI+) being the RoHS-compliant tape-and-reel variant typically recommended for new designs. Engineers planning long-life-cycle designs should verify lifecycle status with their distributor, as Maxim has historically transitioned older DAS parts to last-time-buy status.
What is the lead time for the MAX196ACAI+?
As of October 2026, DigiKey lists approximately 97 units of MAX196ACAI+ in stock with same-day shipping for orders placed before the cutoff. Mouser and Arrow typically stock the part as well. For high-volume orders (>=5,000 units), lead times of 8-12 weeks are common when distributor stock is depleted, since the part is built on Maxim's mature CMOS DAS process. Engineers should plan ahead and consider the temperature-extended MAX196AEAI+ variant as a secondary source.
How much does the MAX196ACAI+ cost?
As of October 2026, the MAX196ACAI+ unit price at DigiKey is approximately $55.71 at qty 1, dropping to roughly $35.12 at qty 1,000. Volume pricing typically follows a 10-20% step at each decade. Mouser pricing tracks within 5% of DigiKey. For cost-sensitive designs, consider the MAX196BEAI+ (lower-grade linearity) or MAX190 family for older designs where ±5 V only is acceptable.
Is the MAX196ACAI suitable for industrial PLC analog input modules?
Yes, the MAX196ACAI is a strong fit for industrial PLC analog input modules because it integrates fault-protected ±10 V inputs (survives wiring faults to ±16.5 V), software-programmable ranges per channel, and a parallel bus interface that pairs naturally with legacy 8/16-bit microcontrollers. According to Maxim's reference designs, six channels at 100 kSPS aggregate is sufficient for sub-millisecond loop rates in PID applications. Industrial designers should add external TVS diodes and R-C filtering for IEC 61000-4 ESD/EMI compliance.
What are the key specifications of the MAX196ACAI that engineers should know?
The MAX196ACAI key specifications are: 12-bit SAR ADC with 100 kSPS throughput, 6 single-ended input channels with software-selectable ranges of 0 to +5 V / 0 to +10 V / ±5 V / ±10 V, ±16.5 V fault-protected analog inputs, internal 4.096 V reference (1% accuracy), 73 dB SINAD at Nyquist, ±0.5 LSB INL, single +5 V supply on both analog and digital rails, 28-pin SSOP package, and commercial 0°C to +70°C operating temperature. The parallel 12-bit data bus requires only 3 control lines (CS, RD, WR) for full-duplex register access.
What is the best drop-in replacement for MAX196ACAI?
The best drop-in replacement for MAX196ACAI is the MAX196AEAI+, which uses the same 28-pin SSOP footprint, identical 12-bit/100 kSPS/6-channel architecture, and same ±10 V bipolar input ranges. The only difference is operating temperature: -40°C to +85°C (extended-industrial) instead of 0°C to +70°C (commercial). For designers who need a cross-brand alternative, no true drop-in exists; consider the Analog Devices AD7606 family for new designs, but note the AD7606 is a 16-bit 8-channel part and requires PCB rework.

Selection Guide

Choose the MAX196ACAI when designing a commercial-temperature-range (0°C to +70°C) multi-channel data acquisition system that needs ±10V bipolar input ranges, fault-protected analog inputs, and a parallel 12-bit bus interface in a compact 28-SSOP footprint. It excels in PLC analog input modules, industrial data loggers, and embedded sensor front ends. Choose the MAX196AEAI+ instead if your design operates in extended-industrial (-40°C to +85°C) environments such as outdoor cabinets, vehicle under-hood electronics, or unheated factory floors. Choose the MAX196BCAI+ for cost-sensitive designs where ±1 LSB INL (B-grade) is acceptable. Avoid the MAX196AEWI+ if PCB area is constrained; it shares the SSOP's electrical specs but uses the larger SOIC-28-Wide footprint. For new designs requiring higher resolution, consider the 16-bit AD7606 family, but note that it requires PCB rework and uses a different pinout.

  • Internal 4.096V reference with 1mV/LSB scaling (vs MAX196ACAI+)

Design Notes

The MAX196ACAI requires clean +5 V on both AV+ (analog) and DV+ (digital) rails. Although both pins share the same +5 V nominal supply, decouple them locally with a 10 µF tantalum + 0.1 µF ceramic combination each, placed within 5 mm of the IC pin. Star-ground topology is recommended: tie AV+ and DV+ supplies at the regulator output, but route the AV+ plane and DV+ plane separately on the PCB. Add a ferrite bead (e.g., BLM31PG601SN1L) between analog and digital +5 V planes for switching-noise isolation. AV+ draws approximately 15 mA typical at 100 kSPS conversion rate; DV+ draws approximately 2 mA typical. Estimated: at full conversion duty cycle, total supply current stays below 20 mA, well within the 100 mA limit of a typical 78M05 or ADP3338 linear regulator.

Place a 4.7 µF tantalum or ceramic capacitor on the VREF pin (pin 10) to AGND to filter reference noise; the internal 4.096 V reference needs this bypass for 12-bit accurate conversions. Route all six AIN traces as matched-length differential pairs (if used in pseudo-differential mode) or as guarded single-ended traces surrounded by an AGND shield. Keep digital bus traces (D0-D11, CS, RD, WR, INT) on the opposite side of the PCB from analog traces to prevent digital switching noise coupling into the analog front end. The 28-SSOP package has an exposed pad option for thermal dissipation; do not connect the EP to AGND unless specifically recommended in the datasheet.

Each analog input should be filtered with a 1 kΩ series resistor + 1 nF ceramic capacitor to AGND (giving a 159 kHz -3 dB cutoff) before reaching the AIN pin. This R-C network limits the input bandwidth to below the ADC's Nyquist frequency (50 kHz at 100 kSPS), preventing aliasing of out-of-band noise. For higher-impedance sources (> 10 kΩ), increase the capacitor to 10 nF or use a unity-gain buffer (e.g., MAX145AEPA) to prevent ADC-input-distortion-knee effects. The input impedance of each AIN pin is approximately 5 kΩ during sampling (track mode) and much higher (GΩ range) during hold mode.

Do not leave unused AIN pins floating - tie them to AGND through a 1 kΩ resistor to prevent input-channel crosstalk and ESD entry paths. Avoid using the INTREF/EXTREF pin as a digital input while a conversion is in progress; the reference-mode change can corrupt the ongoing conversion by up to 1 LSB. When using an external reference, ensure the reference source can drive the 4.096 VREF pin's 1 mA typical load; ADR01/ADR02/ADR435 are good choices. Do not exceed ±16.5 V on AIN pins even though fault-protected; sustained over-voltage beyond ±25 V will damage the protection clamps. Always wait at least 10 µs after power-up before initiating the first conversion, to allow the internal reference to settle.
