PIC16C76-10I/SO Overview

The Microchip Technology PIC16C76-10I/SO is an 8-bit CMOS OTP-based microcontroller from the PIC16C7X mid-range family, integrating a 10MHz core, 14KB (8K x 14) of One-Time-Programmable program memory and 368 bytes of RAM in a 28-pin SOIC package. The part delivers 200ns instruction execution, supports 35 single-word instructions, and is pin-compatible with the PIC16C5X and PIC12CXXX lines.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer containing a CPU, program memory, data RAM, peripherals and I/O. The PIC16C7X family adds integrated analog and serial peripherals to the mid-range core, reducing external component count. PIC16C76 specifically targets applications that need on-chip ADC plus SPI/I2C/USART connectivity. Compared with modern PIC16F Flash parts it trades reprogrammability for lower unit cost in high-volume, code-stable products.

Key features include 5 channels of 8-bit ADC, 2 additional timers, 2 capture/compare/PWM modules, a synchronous serial port configurable as 3-wire SPI or 2-wire I2C, a USART, and 22 digital I/O pins. The 10MHz oscillator drives a 4-state pipeline that yields a 10 MIPS instruction throughput. The "-10I" suffix indicates 10MHz maximum frequency and the industrial -40C to +85C temperature range, while "/SO" denotes the 28-pin 7.50mm-wide SOIC package.

The architecture combines a RISC Harvard CPU with a 14-bit instruction word and an 8-bit data path. Peripherals share a common interrupt structure and are addressed through banked SFRs. The OTP program memory is programmed once at production time, which is why Microchip recommends PIC16F76 for new designs and prototype runs.

Typical applications include industrial process control nodes, building automation sensor interfaces, motor control signal conditioning, low-cost consumer appliance controllers, and educational/development boards where the well-documented mid-range instruction set simplifies firmware development.

When designing with this device, verify the OTP programming flow against your production test strategy, because OTP parts cannot be reprogrammed if a code bug is discovered after the part is sealed. For prototyping or field-upgradable firmware, evaluate PIC16F76-I/SO, which shares the same 28-SOIC footprint and pinout but uses Flash memory.

Typical Applications

PIC16C76-10I/SO is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial Process Control Nodes, Building Automation Sensor Hubs, Consumer Appliance Controllers, Low-Cost Educational Microcontroller Boards, Motor Control Signal Conditioning, Legacy Industrial Replacement Boards.

🏭

Industrial Process Control Nodes

The PIC16C76-10I/SO fits industrial sensor-interface and process-control nodes that require deterministic 8-bit processing at low unit cost. Its 14 KB OTP stores fixed control firmware, while the 5-channel 8-bit ADC reads analog sensor outputs (temperature, pressure, flow) directly, eliminating external ADC cost. The integrated SPI/I2C and USART peripherals provide simple daisy-chaining of multiple nodes over RS-485 transceivers. Industrial -40C to +85C operation suits factory floor environments, and the 22 digital I/O pins drive relays, opto-couplers, and indicator LEDs without external logic. Pair with PIC16C76-10I/SO in main loop plus PIC12C508 slaves for housekeeping I/O expanders.

🧩

Building Automation Sensor Hubs

The PIC16C76-10I/SO suits multi-sensor building-automation hubs because the on-chip ADC handles up to five analog channels (light, CO2, humidity transducers) and the SSP/I2C port talks to digital sensors (SHT21, BMP280) or an EEPROM for parameter storage. The 10 MIPS throughput is sufficient for simple control loops and filtering, while the OTP memory locks production firmware against accidental overwrites. USART enables Modbus RTU communication to a building management system. Pair with PIC16C76-10I/SO controller plus AT24C256 I2C EEPROM and an MCP23017 I/O expander.

πŸ“±

Consumer Appliance Controllers

The PIC16C76-10I/SO is widely used as the main MCU in cost-sensitive consumer appliances (microwave ovens, washing machines, air conditioners) where code stability and low unit cost outweigh reprogrammability. Its 2 CCP modules generate PWM outputs for motor speed, valve, or heater control, while 22 I/O pins scan keypads and drive 7-segment or character LCDs. The integrated USART can drive a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi module for connectivity options. The industrial temperature grade covers kitchen and laundry environments. Pair with PIC16C76-10I/SO plus ULN2003A driver array and a 16x2 character LCD.

πŸ”§

Low-Cost Educational Microcontroller Boards

The PIC16C76-10I/SO is used in educational labs and training kits because the well-documented 35-instruction mid-range core is approachable for first-time embedded programmers. Its integrated peripherals (ADC, SPI, I2C, USART, CCP) let students exercise every common MCU subsystem without external expansion chips. The 14 KB OTP holds sample programs such as a digital thermometer, a serial terminal, or a PWM motor controller. Pair with PIC16C76-10I/SO plus PICkit 3 programmer and a simple character LCD.

⚑

Motor Control Signal Conditioning

The PIC16C76-10I/SO fits low-speed motor-control front-ends where its 2 CCP/PWM channels generate complementary drive signals for small DC or stepper motors. The 5-channel ADC samples current-sense amplifiers and back-EMF feedback, while the USART reports telemetry to a host controller. Industrial temperature grade supports HVAC blower and pump applications. Pair with PIC16C76-10I/SO plus DRV8871 brushed-DC driver and ACS712 current sensor.

πŸ–₯️

Legacy Industrial Replacement Boards

The PIC16C76-10I/SO is used to repair or maintain legacy industrial controllers whose firmware was originally developed against this OTP part. Because OTP parts cannot be re-flashed, the only safe repair path is to swap a fresh PIC16C76-10I/SO onto the existing PCB. Its 28-SOIC footprint matches every spare-slot design that used the original PIC16C7X mid-range family. Pair with PIC16C76-10I/SO plus verified replacement FIFO/EEPROM chips from the original BOM.

Selection Guide

Choose PIC16C76-10I/SO when you need a low-cost 8-bit MCU for a high-volume, code-stable industrial or appliance product where OTP memory locking is acceptable. The 10 MHz core, 14 KB OTP, 5-channel ADC, and industrial -40C to +85C temperature range cover most sensor-interface and motor-control nodes. For any new design, prefer the pin-compatible PIC16F76-I/SO - it adds Flash memory, in-circuit serial programming, and 20 MHz throughput with the same 28-SOIC footprint. Use the other drop-in variants (PIC16C76T-10I/SO for tape-and-reel, PIC16C76-10/SO for commercial temp grade, PIC16C76-10E/SO for extended -40C to +125C, PIC16C76-20I/SO for 20 MHz headroom) when one specific parameter differs from the baseline. Avoid PIC16C73B-04I/SO unless you are memory-limited, because it has only 4 KB OTP and runs at 4 MHz.

Design Notes

PIC16C76 is One-Time-Programmable: a code bug in production firmware cannot be corrected after the part is sealed on the PCB. Lock down firmware revision control and verify with engineering samples before any production run. If field upgrades are required, choose PIC16F76-I/SO instead - it shares the same 28-SOIC footprint but uses Flash memory with ICSP.

Decouple VDD with at least one 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the VDD/VSS pins; for noisy environments add a 10 uF tantalum or ceramic bulk capacitor on the same VDD net. The PIC16C76's ADC accuracy is sensitive to VDD ripple; route analog VDD separately from digital VDD if the board has switching regulators, and add a ferrite bead in series.

Place the crystal or resonator within 10 mm of OSC1/OSC2 and guard the traces with a ground pour to reduce EMI pickup. Keep RC3/SCK/SCL, RC4/SDI/SDA, and RC5/SDO traces short to avoid ringing on SPI/I2C buses above 1 MHz. For reliable ICSP debugging on a prototype board, expose MCLR/VPP, RB6/PGC, RB7/PGD to a 5-pin header even if you are using OTP for production.

PIC16C76-10I/SO dissipation is low (under 100 mW typical at 10 MHz, 5 V), so no thermal management is required beyond standard PCB design. However, in enclosed industrial enclosures with ambient above 60C, derate oscillator drive strength (HS to XT mode) and reduce clock to lower internal heating. Verified per the Microchip PIC16C7X datasheet DC characteristics.
