PIC18F24K50T-I/SS Overview

The Microchip Technology PIC18F24K50T-I/SS is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller from the PIC18F "K50" family featuring integrated full-speed USB 2.0 transceivers, 16 KB of Flash program memory, 2 KB of SRAM and 256 bytes of EEPROM, operating at up to 48 MHz from a 2.3V to 5.5V supply in a 28-pin SSOP package.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a programmable logic device that executes a RISC-style instruction set on 8-bit-wide data paths. PIC18F devices specifically implement an enhanced Harvard architecture with a 16-bit instruction word, 31-level hardware stack and a hardware multiplier, occupying a mid-tier position in the Microchip microcontroller hierarchy between PIC16 baseline devices and the 16-bit dsPIC and PIC24 families. The PIC18F24K50 is part of the XLP (eXtreme Low Power) family of MCUs optimized for battery-powered and USB-connected designs.

Key features include 25 general-purpose I/O pins capable of mTouch capacitive touch sensing, a 10-bit ADC with up to 14 channels, two analog comparators, two CCP modules, an Enhanced Universal Synchronous/Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (EUSART), an SPI and an I2C peripheral. The on-chip full-speed USB 2.0 transceiver supports both Host and Device operation modes and includes internal pull-up/pull-down resistors, eliminating the need for external USB termination components in many embedded designs.

The architecture uses a 16-bit instruction width with 8-bit data paths and an internal 48 MHz oscillator that can be software-calibrated. The device includes four hardware timer modules (Timer0/1/2/3), an RTCC for real-time clock operation, and an mTouch peripheral module. Active mode current is typically under 2 mA at 4 MHz, while sleep current drops to approximately 20 nA with full SRAM retention, enabling long battery life in standby.

Typical applications include USB HID peripherals such as keyboards, mice and game controllers, USB-to-UART bridges, capacitive touch interfaces (keyboards, sliders, proximity sensors), battery-powered sensor nodes with USB charging, and low-cost industrial controllers. The integrated USB transceiver reduces BOM cost and PCB area versus MCUs that require an external USB chip.

When designing with the PIC18F24K50, ensure the VUSB pin is decoupled with a 220 nF capacitor and the internal USB regulator is enabled in firmware. Programming is supported via ICSP on dedicated PGC/PGD pins, and debugging requires a dedicated RLOC8 area on the PCB for in-circuit debugger tools.

Selection Guide

Choose the PIC18F24K50T-I/SS for new USB 2.0 full-speed device designs that need 16 KB of Flash for HID or CDC firmware, 2 KB SRAM for buffers, integrated USB transceiver and 25 I/O pins in a 28-SSOP package. Migrate to PIC18F25K50T-I/SS when you need more Flash (32 KB) for richer USB Host stacks while keeping the same 28-SSOP footprint. Switch to PIC18LF24K50T-I/SS for 1.8-3.6V battery-only designs that cannot tolerate 5V VBUS. Use PIC18F24K50T-I/ML (QFN-28) when PCB space is critical and you have a QFN-suitable reflow process. Avoid cross-package migrations to PIC18F24K50T-I/SO or PIC18F24K22T-I/SS because they lack integrated USB or use a different package. All five alternates are from the same Microchip K50 family on the same silicon, ensuring identical peripheral mapping and instruction-set compatibility.

  • Same die, different form factor - SSOP vs QFN (vs PIC18F24K50T-I/ML)

Design Notes

Decouple the VUSB pin with a 220 nF ceramic capacitor placed as close to the pin as physically possible (under 3 mm trace length) per Microchip guidance. The internal 3.3 V LDO that powers the USB transceiver needs this cap to maintain ripple under 50 mVpp during DP/DM switching. The VDD supply should have a 10 uF bulk + 100 nF high-frequency capacitor pair within 5 mm; inadequate decoupling on VUSB causes USB enumeration failures and unstable USB Full-Speed eye-pattern compliance tests.

Do not connect external 5V USB VBUS directly to the VUSB pin - the internal LDO is only designed to source current OUT of the VUSB pin, not accept external voltages; feeding VUSB externally disables USB and may damage the regulator. For USB Host applications requiring 5V VBUS sourcing, drive the VBUS enable pin through a high-side switch controlled by a digital I/O - never tie VUSB to VDD.

Route the USB D+ (pin 19) and D- (pin 18) signals as a 90-ohm differential pair on the top layer with no splits, keeping the trace length under 50 mm and using a continuous reference plane underneath. Avoid routing other digital signals across the USB differential pair. Place the 15 kohm internal pull-up resistor on D+ configuration in firmware or use the dedicated pull-up enable bit in the UCON register; do NOT add an external pull-up resistor on D+ since the internal pull-up is on-chip and adding external creates a parallel resistance that violates USB specification.

Allocate PCB area for an ICSP debug header (5 pins: MCLR/VPP, VDD, VSS, PGC, PGD) and at least 4 RLOC8 calibration trace stubs near the device for in-circuit debugging. The ICSP pins are NOT removable in production firmware - designers should plan for either a 5-pin 100-mil header or programming test points. Skipping debug header access makes field firmware updates and factory programming significantly harder.
