PIC32MX420F032HT-40I/MR Overview

The Microchip PIC32MX420F032HT-40I/MR is a 32-bit MIPS M4K microcontroller running up to 40 MHz with 32 KB Flash and 8 KB SRAM in a 64-pin VQFN (9x9 mm) package with exposed thermal pad, supplied on tape and reel. It integrates 53 general-purpose I/O pins, a 10-bit ADC, USB 2.0 full-speed OTG, and the standard PIC32MX peripheral set (UART, SPI, I2C, PMP, timers, RTCC, and CTMU). Operating voltage spans 2.3 V to 3.6 V, industrial temperature range is -40 C to +85 C, and the device is RoHS compliant with a lead-free matte-tin finish.

A 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) is an embedded processor with a 32-bit data path, on-chip Flash program memory and SRAM, plus a configurable peripheral set, designed to execute complex code in real-time for connected or signal-processing applications. The PIC32MX4xx family extends the PIC ecosystem to MIPS M4K core performance, enabling entry-level graphical USB, audio, and sensing designs at consumer-grade pricing.

Key differentiating features include single-cycle multiply/divide, hardware DMA for ADC and USB, a 16-channel 10-bit 1 Msps ADC, four 16-bit timers, two I2C, two SPI, and two UART channels, plus USB OTG with integrated transceiver. The CTMU module supports touch sensing, mTouch capacitive buttons, and precise time measurement. The 64-VQFN (9x9 mm) package with exposed pad delivers thermal resistance of approximately 27 C/W theta-JA when properly soldered to a 4-layer board with adequate copper.

The architecture combines a 5-stage MIPS M4K pipeline, dual-bank Flash with prefetch, a 32 KB unified cache, and an 8 KB SRAM. The peripheral bus operates at the system clock divided by two, allowing fast I/O without CPU stall. The device includes a 16-bit wide instruction bus and supports MIPS16e code compression, reducing Flash footprint by approximately 30 percent.

Typical applications include USB peripherals, consumer audio devices, industrial control and HMI, sensor aggregation, and low-cost connectivity bridges. In USB audio dongle designs the part's integrated USB OTG transceiver and I2S interface eliminate external bridge chips. The 64-pin VQFN gives enough I/O for 4-wire touch + LCD + USB designs without needing a larger package.

When designing with this device, pay attention to the VQFN thermal pad layout: the central exposed pad must be soldered to a continuous ground copper pour with thermal vias to inner layers. Program code placement in the lower Flash bank improves prefetch efficiency and execution speed for sequential code. Decoupling must include at least one 0.1 uF ceramic on every VDD pin pair plus a single 10 uF bulk capacitor.

Design Notes

The 64-VQFN (9x9 mm) exposed thermal pad must be soldered to a continuous ground copper pour with at least 9 thermal vias (0.3 mm drill, 0.6 mm pad, 1.0 mm pitch) connecting to inner ground planes. According to Microchip datasheet DS60001168, the resulting theta-JA is approximately 27 C/W on a 4-layer JEDEC EIA/JESD51 test board. At 40 MHz with all peripherals active, typical power consumption is 65 mW, so junction rise above ambient stays below 5 C with proper pad soldering. Do not leave the EP floating; this causes thermal runaway and violates DC bias conditions.

Decoupling must include one 0.1 uF X7R ceramic on every VDD pin pair (4 pins total on the VQFN), placed within 3 mm of the pin, plus a single 10 uF X5R bulk capacitor on the same net. The AVDD pin requires a separate 0.1 uF + 10 uF pair with an LC ferrite (600 ohm at 100 MHz) from VDD to keep ADC reference noise below 1 LSB. The VBUS pin on USB designs must have a 0.1 uF + 4.7 uF pair and an ESD protection array (USBLC6-2SC6) within 5 mm of the connector. Trace impedance for USB D+/D- must be 90 ohm differential per USB 2.0 specification.

Do not confuse PIC32MX420 (with USB OTG) and PIC32MX320 (without USB) when ordering - the part numbers differ only in the middle digit and the silicon is not interchangeable for USB designs. The MCLR pin requires a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD with a 100 nF cap to ground for proper reset behavior; floating MCLR causes unreliable startups. The PGED1/PGEC1 programming pins must not be pulled low at boot, or the part enters debug mode. Configuration bits must be set to disable JTAG and enable the appropriate oscillator mode before code execution; defaults are not appropriate for most designs.

Place the 8 MHz primary crystal within 5 mm of the OSC1/OSC2 pins with short traces surrounded by a grounded copper keepout. The 32.768 kHz secondary crystal for RTCC likewise needs a 5 mm placement window. USB D+ and D- traces must be length-matched within 2 mm and routed over a continuous ground plane, never over power planes or split grounds. The ADC analog inputs must be routed away from switching signals; if this is impossible, place a guard ground trace between the analog and digital nets. The exposed pad is the primary ground return - do not route signals under the package.
