PIC32MZ1064DAS176-V/2J Overview
A 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a microprocessor-based computing core integrated with program and data memory, peripherals, and interrupt logic onto a single silicon die, enabling embedded control of complex real-time tasks. The PIC32MZ DA family occupies the high end of Microchip's MCU portfolio, sitting above mainstream PIC32MX parts and approaching MPU-level integration. Its internal hierarchy is: PIC32MZ1064DAS176 -> PIC32MZ DA family -> PIC32MZ series -> PIC 32-bit -> MIPS32 microAptiv core -> Microchip 32-bit MCU ecosystem. The 'DAS' suffix denotes a Graphics-integrated variant with stacked DDR2 memory support, distinguishing it from lower-cost 'DAR' and 'DAL' siblings.
Key features include 1MB (1M x 8) Flash program memory, 640KB SRAM, an integrated 12-bit 18 MSPS ADC with up to 45 analog inputs, a High-Speed USB 2.0 interface, dual CAN modules, and an integrated LCC (Live Color Controller) Graphics Processor that accelerates GUI rendering without burdening the CPU. The device also supports 32MB or 128MB externally addressable DDR2 DRAM through its dedicated controller, removing the need for an external memory chip in many designs.
The PIC32MZ1064DAS176-V/2J is engineered for GUI-intensive embedded applications where designers want MPU-class performance with MCU-class ease of programming. The MIPS32 microAptiv core delivers 200 DMIPS throughput and supports DSP instructions and double-precision FPU, while the integrated graphics pipeline can drive TFT panels with hardware-accelerated alpha blending, chroma keying, and color conversion.
Typical applications include industrial HMI panels, automotive infotainment clusters, medical patient monitors, point-of-sale terminals, and any embedded product that requires a responsive color graphical user interface without a discrete GPU. The integrated DDR2 controller reduces BOM cost and PCB area compared to designs that pair a microcontroller with an external SDRAM chip.
When designing with this device, pay careful attention to DDR2 signal integrity: maintain matched trace lengths for the DDR2 byte lanes, use reference-impedance-controlled stackups, and provide local decoupling close to the DDR2 supply pins. The 176-LQFP package exposes the full peripheral set but requires careful PCB fan-out to avoid crosstalk on high-speed lines.

Key Differentiators
- Integrated DDR2 controller removes external SDRAM chip (vs PIC32MZ1064DAR176-V/2J)
- Higher 1.5 MB Flash option on same footprint (vs PIC32MZ1025DAS176-V/2J)
- V-temp -40C to +105C for industrial applications (vs PIC32MZ1064DAG176T-I/2J)
Design Notes
The integrated DDR2 controller requires matched-length routing on the byte groups. Use a 4-layer PCB stackup with continuous ground plane under the DDR2 signals, 50 ohm single-ended controlled impedance for data/clock/strobe, and 100 ohm differential for clock pairs. Trace length matching tolerance should be within +/- 25 mil for byte lanes and within +/- 10 mil for the CK/CK# pair. Place the DDR2 supply decoupling (100 nF + 4.7 uF) within 100 mil of the VDD pins. Without these practices, DDR2 read/write errors are likely.
The PIC32MZ1064DAS176-V/2J has separate AVDD/AVSS and VDD/VSS rails. The AVDD pin powers the 12-bit ADC and must be filtered with a ferrite bead from VDD and decoupled with 100 nF + 10 uF local capacitors. The internal DDR2 PHY has its own dedicated 1.8V supply pin that must be brought up only after the 3.3V core supply is stable to prevent in-rush latchup. Sequencing violation may permanently damage the DDR2 PHY.
Do not assume the PIC32MX and PIC32MZ cores are software-compatible. The PIC32MZ DA family uses the MIPS microAptiv core with new interrupt controller, new DMA controller, and a different peripheral library API. Code written for PIC32MX parts must be recompiled with the PIC32MZ Harmony framework and re-validated. Pin multiplexing tables are also different - do not assume pin 1 of a 176-LQFP PIC32MX corresponds to the same function on the PIC32MZ1064DAS176.
