STM32L072CBT6 Visão geral

The STMicroelectronics STM32L072CBT6 is an ultra-low-power 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0+ microcontroller running at up to 32 MHz with 128 KB of Flash, 20 KB of SRAM, and a crystal-less USB 2.0 full-speed device interface, supplied in a 48-pin LQFP (7x7 mm) industrial-grade package.

An MCU (microcontroller unit) integrates a CPU core, embedded memory, and peripherals on a single chip, acting as the compute element in embedded designs. The STM32L072xx sits within the STM32L0 ultra-low-power family of Arm Cortex-M0+ devices, occupying the energy-conscious tier below the mainstream STM32F0 and the higher-performance STM32L4 lines, targeting battery-powered systems where quiescent current is the dominant figure of merit.

Differentiating features include the crystal-less USB 2.0 full-speed controller (eliminating the external 12 MHz crystal in many designs), seven low-power modes reaching sub-µA standby, a flexible low-power timer (LPTIM) for autonomous operation, a 12-bit ADC, and a 1.65 V to 3.6 V supply range that supports direct coin-cell, alkaline, or Li-ion operation. Multiple USART, SPI, and I2C interfaces aggregate sensors and radios.

The Cortex-M0+ core pairs a two-stage pipeline with single-cycle I/O for low dynamic power, while the integrated USB 2.0 FS PHY, BOR, and programmable voltage detector (PVD) reduce external components. Independent watchdogs (WWDG/IWDG), a real-time clock, and an AES-128 hardware accelerator address safety, timekeeping, and security in metering or IoT end nodes.

Typical applications include battery-powered metering, portable medical monitors, USB-connected sensor dongles, and smart-building IoT end nodes. The crystal-less USB is particularly attractive for low-cost, small-form-factor devices where a 12 MHz crystal would compromise enclosure size.

Design consideration: budget SRAM carefully (20 KB) when running a USB stack plus wireless protocol buffer - enabling link-layer encryption or larger descriptors can push SRAM to its ceiling.

For high-jitter or aggressive suspend-current budgets, the ST datasheet still recommends an external crystal; verify against your USB compliance tolerance window.
What is the difference between STM32L072CBT6 and STM32L071CBT6?
The STM32L072CBT6 includes the crystal-less USB 2.0 full-speed controller, while the STM32L071CBT6 does not include USB. Both share the same Cortex-M0+ core at 32 MHz, 128 KB Flash, 20 KB SRAM, LQFP-48 package, and pinout. Choose STM32L072 for USB device applications; choose STM32L071 for non-USB designs to save the ~$0.30 USB IP cost. Both are drop-in pin-compatible on the LQFP-48 footprint.
Is STM32L072CBT6 suitable for battery-powered IoT sensors?
Yes, the STM32L072CBT6 is purpose-built for battery-powered IoT nodes. STMicroelectronics datasheet figures show Stop mode current down to 0.4 uA with RTC running and Standby mode below 1 uA. Combined with the 1.65 V minimum supply, it can run for years from a CR2032 coin cell in duty-cycled sensor applications. LPTIM can wake the core autonomously without the main regulator, enabling sub-µA average power.
Where can I buy STM32L072CBT6 and what is the price?
The STM32L072CBT6 is in stock at major authorized distributors including DigiKey, Mouser, and Arrow, as of 2026-10-10. Pricing breaks are approximately $5.78 at qty 1, $4.62 at qty 100, and $3.71 at qty 1000. Order quantities above 1000 pieces are typically quoted on request and may carry 6-10 week lead times from non-stocking distributors during supply tightness.

What is the best drop-in replacement for STM32L072CBT6?
The best drop-in same-brand replacement is STM32L073CBT6, which adds AES-128 hardware encryption to the same 128 KB Flash / 20 KB SRAM / LQFP-48 pinout. For a lower-cost alternative, STM32L051C8T3 (in the Site MPN list, 64 KB Flash, 8 KB SRAM, same LQFP-48 pinout with NC pin remap) is a viable same-package variant at reduced memory. Cross-brand options require PCB rework and are not true drop-ins.
Can STM32L072CBT6 be replaced by STM32L072RBT6?
The STM32L072RBT6 is in a 64-pin LQFP package, while the STM32L072CBT6 is in a 48-pin LQFP. Because the pin count differs, STM32L072RBT6 is NOT a drop-in replacement for STM32L072CBT6 on existing PCBs - the 48-pin PCB cannot accept a 64-pin part without rework. However, the silicon core, Flash (128 KB), and SRAM (20 KB) are identical, so the two are drop-in equivalents on a PCB designed for the matching package footprint.
What are the key differences: STM32L072CBT6 vs STM32L053R6T6?
The STM32L072CBT6 features 128 KB Flash and 20 KB SRAM in LQFP-48, while the STM32L053R6T6 has only 32 KB Flash and 8 KB SRAM in LQFP-64. Additionally, the STM32L072 includes the crystal-less USB 2.0 full-speed controller; the STM32L053 does not. The STM32L072CBT6 is the correct choice for USB-enabled designs requiring more memory; the STM32L053R6T6 suits lower-cost non-USB applications with relaxed memory needs. These are different packages, so not drop-in.
When should I choose STM32L072CBT6 over STM32L433CCT6?
Choose STM32L072CBT6 when you need the absolute lowest power consumption (sub-µA standby) and crystal-less USB in a cost-optimized Cortex-M0+ design. Choose STM32L433CCT6 (Cortex-M4 with FPU at 80 MHz, 256 KB Flash, 64 KB SRAM) when your application needs DSP instructions, higher compute throughput, or larger memory. STM32L072CBT6 wins on power-per-MHz efficiency and BOM cost; STM32L433CCT6 wins on performance and headroom. Different pinout packages preclude drop-in replacement.
What is the ADC resolution on STM32L072CBT6?
The STM32L072CBT6 integrates a 12-bit SAR ADC, capable of up to 1.14 MSPS in fast channels. According to the STMicroelectronics datasheet, oversampling can extend effective resolution to 16 bits at the cost of sample rate. Multiple internal channels can be routed for VBAT measurement, temperature sensor, and reference voltage. For higher precision, pair the ADC with the internal 1.2 V reference or an external VREF+ for ratiometric measurements.
How does STM32L072CBT6 differ from STM32F072CBT6?
The STM32L072CBT6 (Cortex-M0+, 32 MHz, ultra-low-power) and STM32F072CBT6 (Cortex-M0, 48 MHz, mainstream) share the same LQFP-48 pinout and drop-in compatibility on the PCB footprint. The STM32L072 adds Stop/Standby low-power modes reaching 0.4 uA, while the STM32F072 has higher MIPS but higher active current. Choose STM32L072 for battery-powered designs; choose STM32F072 for USB-bus-powered or line-powered designs where active power matters less than CPU speed. The 'L' in STM32L0 indicates the ultra-low-power tier.

Notas de projeto

Estimated: at 32 MHz active, VDD=3.3 V, the Cortex-M0+ core draws approximately 5 mA with peripherals off and approximately 9 mA with all peripherals active. Stop mode with RTC running drops this to 0.4 uA, while Standby with RTC reaches 0.27 uA per the STMicroelectronics datasheet. To achieve the lowest sleep current, place unused GPIO pins in analog mode (no Schmitt trigger), disable all unused peripherals in RCC, and remove external pull-ups on floating pins. The LPTIM can wake the part autonomously without the main voltage regulator, enabling true sub-µA average current for duty-cycled sensor reads.

Place decoupling capacitors as close as possible to each VDD pin: a 100 nF X7R per pin plus a 4.7 uF bulk on the main VDD net. Keep the VDDA/VSSA pair isolated from noisy digital grounds with a ferrite bead or star-ground topology. The crystal-less USB 2.0 full-speed DP/DM traces (PA11/PA12) must be 90 ohm differential with a length-matched ground return, even though no external 12 MHz crystal is required. Reference STMicroelectronics application note AN4879 for USB PCB layout guidelines.

Three pitfalls to avoid: (1) Do not enable USB crystal-less mode unless the HSI48 internal oscillator accuracy is within the USB tolerance window for your application; for production designs targeting industrial temperature, an external crystal may be required. (2) The 20 KB SRAM is shared between USB buffers, application heap, and stack - leaving too much for USB descriptors causes link errors during stack overflow. (3) Do not exceed 24 MHz on PB6/PB7 (I2C1) without external pull-ups; internal pull-ups are weak and may fail in noisy environments. The PA11/PA12 pins are NOSTROBE during reset to allow crystal-less USB.

When routing the SPI bus to external flash or sensors, keep trace lengths below 50 mm at 32 MHz to avoid reflections. Add a 33 ohm series resistor near the driver for SCK/MOSI to dampen ringing. The I2C bus benefits from 4.7 kohm external pull-ups for reliable 400 kHz Fast Mode operation, since the internal pull-ups are only effective in low-noise environments. SWDIO/SWCLK (PA13/PA14) traces should also be length-matched and kept short for reliable debug probe connection.
