AD7476ABKSZ-REEL Übersicht
An SAR ADC is a type of data converter that uses a successive-approximation register and an internal track-and-hold to digitize an analog input in a fixed number of clock cycles (typically one per N-bit cycle). As a sub-family of Nyquist-rate data converters, SAR ADCs sit between sigma-delta converters (higher resolution, lower speed) and flash ADCs (highest speed, lowest resolution) within the ADC taxonomy. ADCs are integrated circuits that bridge real-world analog signals to digital processors and microcontrollers across the broader mixed-signal and data-acquisition IC hierarchy.
Key features include very low power consumption, a high-speed SPI/QSPI/MICROWIRE-compatible serial interface, and an automatic power-down between conversions that drops current draw dramatically when the part idles between samples. The 6-lead SC-70 footprint makes it one of the smallest 1 MSPS ADCs available, enabling analog front-end placement next to sensors on space-constrained PCBAs.
The device uses a charge redistribution DAC architecture with an internal reference and a high-bandwidth input track-and-hold to deliver 12-bit linearity across the full input common-mode range. Because conversion is deterministic in time (no pipeline latency), the AD7476A is well suited to event-triggered sampling, multiplexed-channel sequencing, and motor-control feedback loops where deterministic group delay is required.
Typical applications include battery-powered portable instrumentation, hand-held multimeters and data loggers, transducer signal conditioning chains, isolated industrial sensors, optical-module monitoring, and general-purpose embedded analog front ends. Designers select this part specifically when PCB area, single-rail operation, and deterministic conversion latency are more important than the very highest absolute sampling rates.
When laying out a board, place the 0.1uF supply-decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin, keep analog and digital grounds separated with a single-point stitch near the IC, and route the SCK, SDATA, and /CS digital traces away from the analog input net. Always drive /CS low before SCK edges and observe the tCONVERT timing budget for accurate 1 MSPS operation.

Typische Anwendungen
AD7476ABKSZ-REEL ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Battery-Powered Portable Instrumentation, Industrial Transducer Signal Conditioning, Optical Module Monitoring, Motor-Control Current Sensing, General-Purpose Embedded Analog Front End, Medical Vital-Sign Acquisition.
Battery-Powered Portable Instrumentation
The AD7476ABKSZ-REEL is a strong fit for battery-powered portable instruments because its 1 MSPS throughput is delivered from a single 2.35 V to 5.25 V supply with sub-mW power draw between conversions. According to the AD7476A datasheet, automatic power-down between conversions drops consumption to a few microamps, allowing handheld multimeters and field data loggers to run for extended periods on a single coin-cell or two-AA pack. The SC-70-6 footprint places the ADC next to sensors without consuming board area.
Empfohlen
Industrial Transducer Signal Conditioning
The AD7476ABKSZ-REEL digitizes analog outputs from bridge sensors, thermocouples, RTDs, and 4-20 mA loops in compact industrial front ends. Its 1 MSPS throughput and SPI-compatible serial interface allow it to feed microcontrollers and isolated DSPs at rates sufficient for vibration, pressure, and process-control loops. The industrial -40C to +85C rating and gull-wing SC-70 package ensure robust soldering and stable operation on dense PLC analog input boards.
Empfohlen
Optical Module Monitoring
In optical transceivers and laser modules, the AD7476ABKSZ-REEL digitizes photodiode currents, TEC voltages, and bias feedback in a minimum of board area. Because its conversion latency is deterministic, MPU firmware can sample on a fixed schedule and close a feedback loop to maintain optical output power without pipelining artifacts. The single-rail operation and sub-1 uA power-down currents match the heat-constrained environment inside an SFP/QSFP-style module.

Motor-Control Current Sensing
Brushless-DC and stepper motor drives need a fast, deterministic ADC to sample phase current and report back to the controller every PWM cycle. The AD7476ABKSZ-REEL's SAR architecture samples in 800 ns with no pipeline delay, meaning the MCU can compute the next duty cycle in the same PWM period. Its 12-bit resolution across a 2.35 V to 5.25 V common-mode range resolves the shunt resistor drop with sufficient precision for FOC and torque-ripple control.

General-Purpose Embedded Analog Front End
A general-purpose analog front end on a microcontroller board can place the AD7476ABKSZ-REEL on a single SC-70-6 land pattern to add a 1 MSPS 12-bit analog channel at minimal cost in board area and BOM. Its standard SPI/QSPI/MICROWIRE-compatible interface is supported by virtually every Cortex-M, AVR, MSP430, and PIC MCU's hardware SPI block with no glue logic required. This makes the part a go-to 'always-on-board' ADC for makers, prototypes, and production designs needing one fast analog channel.

Medical Vital-Sign Acquisition
Although full medical certification is the integrator's responsibility, the AD7476ABKSZ-REEL is well-suited to digitizing analog front ends for pulse oximetry, ECG lead-off detection, and respiration-rate transducers in low-power patient-monitoring peripherals. Its 12-bit resolution across a 2.35 V to 5.25 V input span gives adequate dynamic range for biosignal amplitudes after instrumentation-amp gain stages, while the 1 MSPS throughput supports oversampling techniques for noise reduction. Designers building Class A and B patient-adjacent devices use this part to keep the analog section small and the supply chain flexible.

Designhinweise
Place a 0.1 uF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin and, if the ADC is more than 25 mm from the source supply, add a 1 uF to 10 uF bulk capacitor adjacent to the local regulator. The AD7476A family draws peak current during conversion, so a poorly decoupled rail introduces mid-band noise on the digital data outputs. Estimate: the part's logic-level SCK bursts can pull tens of milliamps for a few cycles, so the decoupling network must respond in <100 ns.
Keep the analog input (VIN+, pin 2) trace short and parallel-routed to ground (pin 3) on the top layer to minimize loop area. Route the SCK, /CS, and SDATA digital traces on the opposite side or an inner layer and stitch a digital-only ground plane under them. A single-point star ground should connect the analog and digital ground planes right at pin 3 of the SC-70-6 to prevent digital return currents from corrupting the analog input.
Do not leave /CS floating - it must be driven by the controlling MCU GPIO. Hold /CS high when no conversion is active to keep the SAR core in power-down. Provide at least one dummy SCK edge with /CS high before the first conversion to ensure the SDATA driver is in the correct three-state mode. Finally, wait the tCONVERT window (typ 800 ns at 12 bits) before clocking SDATA, otherwise you will read bit noise from the still-running SAR capacitors.
Because the SC-70-6 is a tiny leadless-style package, series resistance in the SCK and SDATA traces can collapse the rising edge of SCK and cause bit-shift errors at the highest throughputs. Keep SCK, /CS, and SDATA impedance controlled (target 50 ohm) and length-matched to within 1 cm. Place a small 33 ohm source resistor at the SCK driver if your MCU pin is especially fast, to damp reflections from the ADC pin capacitance.
