AD7495ARM-REEL Übersicht
An SAR ADC (Successive-Approximation Register Analog-to-Digital Converter) is a type of data converter that uses a binary search algorithm and an internal capacitive DAC to convert an analog input voltage into a 12-bit digital code in a single conversion cycle. SAR ADCs occupy a middle ground in the converter hierarchy between flash ADCs (which are fastest but power-hungry) and sigma-delta ADCs (which are highest-resolution but slower), and they are widely used in multiplexed data-acquisition systems, industrial process control loops, and embedded instrumentation because they deliver a fresh sample on every Nth clock edge with no pipeline latency.
Key features of the AD7495ARM-REEL include a 1 MSPS guaranteed sample rate, 68 dB SNR at the analog input, a wide-input-bandwidth track-and-hold front end, an internal 2.5 V reference (the AD7475 sister part uses an external reference), and DSP/MICROWIRE/QSPI/SPI-compatible serial interface. Power consumption is rated at 4.5 mW maximum at 1 MSPS with a 3 V supply and 10.5 mW maximum at 1 MSPS with a 5 V supply. The chip offers a 0.8 µs typical conversion time and a 0-2.5 V analog input range when using the internal reference.
The AD7495ARM-REEL is fabricated on a CMOS process with an integrated track-and-hold amplifier that captures fast input transients without requiring an external buffer. The internal 2.5 V reference and reference buffer are trimmed at the factory, eliminating the need for external reference components in cost-sensitive designs. A VDRIVE pin allows the digital logic interface to operate at a voltage independent from VDD, simplifying connection to 1.8 V or 3.3 V DSPs and microcontrollers.
Typical applications include industrial process control, portable battery-powered instrumentation, motor control feedback loops, optical sensor front ends, and data-acquisition front ends for embedded systems. The 1 MSPS throughput makes it well-suited for sampling multiple multiplexer channels at aggregate rates of several hundred kSPS.
When designing with this part, place a 0.1 µF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to VDD and VDRIVE, and route the analog input trace as a guarded microstrip to minimize digital coupling. The internal reference requires a 10 µF decoupling capacitor on REF OUT; using a smaller value increases conversion noise.

Typische Anwendungen
AD7495ARM-REEL ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Industrial Process Control and Data Acquisition, Portable Battery-Powered Instrumentation, Motor Control Feedback Loops, Optical Sensor Front Ends, Embedded System Data Acquisition Front Ends, Medical and Analytical Instrumentation.
Industrial Process Control and Data Acquisition
The AD7495ARM-REEL is well suited to industrial process-control front ends because its 1 MSPS throughput allows rapid scanning of multiplexed sensor channels while the 12-bit resolution is sufficient for thermocouple, RTD, and 4-20 mA loop digitisation. The wide-bandwidth input track-and-hold captures fast transient events without an external buffer, and the SPI-compatible serial interface simplifies isolation-barrier routing in PLC analog input modules. With 4.5 mW dissipation at 3 V, the part is compatible with loop-powered or battery-backed acquisition modules where thermal budget is tight.
Empfohlen
Portable Battery-Powered Instrumentation
Battery-powered handheld instruments require the lowest possible dissipation without sacrificing bandwidth. The AD7495ARM-REEL draws only 4.5 mW at 1 MSPS from a 3 V supply, and throughput can be reduced at lower sample rates to extend battery life further. The VDRIVE pin allows direct connection to a 1.8 V or 3.3 V microcontroller without a level shifter, reducing BOM cost. The internal 2.5 V reference eliminates the need for a separate reference supply, saving board area in compact handheld designs.
Empfohlen
Motor Control Feedback Loops
Field-oriented control (FOC) of three-phase BLDC and PMSM motors demands simultaneous sampling of two or three current-sense channels at update rates of 10-20 kHz. The AD7495ARM-REEL provides 1 MSPS throughput that, after demultiplexing, supports multiple high-speed current channels. The 0.8 µs conversion time keeps loop latency low, which is critical for high-RPM operation, and the SPI interface easily synchronises to a DSP or FPGA controller. The wide-input-bandwidth track-and-hold captures PWM-edge current spikes without slew limiting.

Optical Sensor Front Ends
Photodiode and color-sensor front ends digitise low-amplitude, high-bandwidth analog signals from transimpedance amplifiers. The AD7495ARM-REEL's wide-bandwidth input track-and-hold preserves the leading edge of fast photodiode pulses, and the 68 dB SNR provides sufficient dynamic range for illuminance or colorimeter measurements. SPI output simplifies routing back to a microcontroller or display controller. The internal 2.5 V reference can directly bias a photodiode through a transimpedance network for single-supply operation.

Embedded System Data Acquisition Front Ends
Embedded DAQ modules built around ARM Cortex-M or ARM Cortex-A microcontrollers need a low-latency ADC that integrates cleanly with DMA-driven SPI peripherals. The AD7495ARM-REEL fits this role because the VDRIVE pin matches common 1.8 V or 3.3 V MCU IO domains, eliminating a level shifter. The 1 MSPS rate allows streaming into a circular DMA buffer at hundreds of kSPS aggregate rates. The 8-MSOP package is small enough to mount directly under a microcontroller on a 4-layer board.

Medical and Analytical Instrumentation
Bench-top analytical instruments such as spectrophotometers, blood-gas analyzers, and electrochemical sensors need 12-bit resolution at moderate sample rates with low noise. The AD7495ARM-REEL's 68 dB SNR and wide-bandwidth track-and-hold preserve the integrity of small analog signals from photodetectors or amperometric sensors. The 2.7 V to 5.25 V supply range simplifies integration into bench-top or point-of-care equipment that uses a common 5 V analog rail. SPI output simplifies isolation routing for patient-connected equipment.

Designhinweise
Place a 0.1 µF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin, and a 10 µF low-ESR capacitor (tantalum or ceramic) on the REF OUT pin to filter the internal 2.5 V reference. Inadequate reference decoupling increases conversion noise and degrades SNR. For lowest noise, the VDRIVE pin should also be locally bypassed with a 0.1 µF capacitor, even when VDRIVE equals VDD.
Route the analog input trace as a guarded microstrip with the AGND pin used as a guard ring around the AIN trace. Keep digital traces (SCLK, CS/SYNC, DOUT) at least 3 mm away from the analog input to prevent digital coupling into the sampled signal. Use a star-ground topology at the AGND pin rather than daisy-chaining analog and digital grounds through the IC body.
The wide-bandwidth input track-and-hold captures signals up to several MHz, so place any input RC anti-alias filter time constant at least 10x less than the sample period. For 1 MSPS operation this means a -3 dB corner above 5 MHz. Do not add a series resistance greater than 50 ohm on AIN without considering the ADC's switched-capacitor input charge kickback - this can introduce gain error and DC offset drift.
Do not leave the VDRIVE pin floating. The digital IO levels float when VDRIVE is unconnected, causing intermittent logic errors on the DOUT line. Always tie VDRIVE to either VDD or to the MCU's IO supply domain. Also avoid operating at sample rates significantly below 10 kSPS without disabling the internal reference buffer, as the reference noise dominates the conversion result at very low throughput.
