ATMEGA645-16AUR Übersicht

The Microchip ATMEGA645-16AUR is an 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 64 KB in-system-programmable Flash, 4 KB SRAM, 2 KB EEPROM, and an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, clocked at up to 16 MHz and delivered in a 64-pin TQFP (14 x 14 mm) package rated for the industrial 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply range.

A microcontroller (MCU) integrates a processor core, memory, and peripherals on a single chip, forming the lowest level of the embedded-system hierarchy: MCU -> processor -> semiconductor -> integrated circuit. The AVR ATmega family uses an advanced RISC architecture with 130 mostly single-cycle instructions, delivering up to 16 MIPS at 16 MHz.

Key features include 64 KB (32K x 16) self-programmable ISP Flash, a JTAG interface for on-chip debugging and boundary scan, 53 programmable I/O lines, an 8-channel 10-bit analog-to-digital converter, and two 8-bit plus one 16-bit timer architecture typical of the ATmega family. Boot loader support enables firmware reprogramming in the field via UART or other interfaces.

Architecturally, the AVR core separates program and data buses (Harvard architecture), executing most instructions in one clock cycle. Peripherals typically include USART serial links, SPI and I2C (TWI) interfaces, timers with PWM outputs, and analog comparators, allowing a single device to handle sensing, control, and communication in mid-complexity embedded designs.

Typical applications include industrial control and automation, embedded instrumentation and data loggers, and consumer appliance controllers where 64 KB of code space, robust I/O, and 5 V noise immunity are valued. The 5.5 V maximum supply suits direct connection to industrial 5 V buses.

Design consideration: keep the AVCC pin within 300 mV of VCC and decouple all supply pins with 100 nF ceramics placed within 5 mm of the package; connect RESET with a 10 k pull-up for reliable ISP programming.

Typische Anwendungen

ATMEGA645-16AUR ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Industrial Control and Automation, Embedded Instrumentation and Data Loggers, Appliance and Consumer Controllers, Hobbyist and Arduino-Compatible Development, Motor Control and PWM Systems, Communication and Networking Nodes.

🏭

Industrial Control and Automation

The ATMEGA645-16AUR fits industrial control nodes because its 4.5-5.5 V supply connects directly to legacy 5 V industrial logic buses, its 53 programmable I/O lines drive relays, indicators, and keypads, and the 8-channel 10-bit ADC samples analog process signals without an external converter. In a typical module, the MCU runs its control loop from 64 KB of ISP Flash while USART, SPI, and TWI interfaces link to sensors and a supervisory controller. The A-grade industrial temperature rating supports panel and floor-mounted enclosures. Because the AVR core executes most of its 130 instructions in a single cycle, deterministic interrupt latency keeps I/O timing predictable - a quantified advantage of 62.5 ns instruction time at 16 MHz over clock-predicated architectures.

🔧

Embedded Instrumentation and Data Loggers

For data loggers and bench instrumentation, the ATMEGA645-16AUR provides an 8-channel 10-bit ADC (approximately 4.9 mV resolution on a 5 V reference) for multi-sensor front ends, 2 KB EEPROM for non-volatile calibration constants and event counters, and 4 KB SRAM for buffering. The JTAG interface enables on-chip debugging and boundary-scan during manufacturing test, reducing bring-up time. Firmware updates in the field use the bootloader in the 64 KB ISP Flash, avoiding desoldering or ISP fixture access. Its 16 MHz clock yields 16 MIPS throughput, sufficient for sampling loops, timestamping, and serial reporting over USART to a host PC or radio module, while the 5 V core directly powers many analog front-end components without level shifting.

⚡

Appliance and Consumer Controllers

White-goods and appliance controllers value the ATmega645's combination of ample code space and robust I/O: 64 KB Flash accommodates feature-rich firmware with UI logic, while hardware timer PWM outputs drive triacs, blowers, and displays. The 10-bit ADC reads temperature sensors, potmeters, and current monitors across 8 channels. Running from an unregulated 5 V rail (4.5-5.5 V tolerance) simplifies power supply design with resistive or buck-derived rails common in appliances. EEPROM stores user settings and wear data across power cycles. The 64-TQFP (14 x 14 mm) surface-mount footprint supports automated assembly on typical appliance PCBA lines, and the active lifecycle status from Microchip secures long-term sourcing for products with decade-scale service lives.

🧩

Hobbyist and Arduino-Compatible Development

The ATMEGA645-16AUR is supported by the community MegaCore Arduino hardware package (MCUdude, GitHub), which brings Arduino IDE sketch development, standard libraries, and ISP-based uploading to the ATmega64/645/649/2560 family. With 64 KB Flash it can host large sketches plus a bootloader, and its 53 I/O lines exceed an ATmega328P by more than 3x, suiting robot chassis control, LED matrices, and retro-computing projects. Developers program it via AVR ISP mkII or Atmel-ICE over SPI ISP, or debug through JTAG. The 5 V logic level means direct compatibility with classic 5 V shields, sensors, and OLED modules, while single-cycle instruction execution keeps bit-banged protocols such as NeoPixel timing within tolerance at 16 MHz.

⚙️

Motor Control and PWM Systems

In low-end motor control, the ATmega645's hardware timers generate complementary PWM outputs for DC motor H-bridges and AC light dimming, with the 16 MHz clock giving fine PWM resolution (up to about 1600 counts at 10 kHz). The 10-bit ADC samples back-EMF, potentiometer position, and current-shun amplifiers across 8 channels, enabling closed-loop speed control entirely in the 64 KB Flash firmware without external controllers. GPIO-driven inputs handle limit switches and encoder quadrature signals via pin-change interrupts. The 4.5-5.5 V rating tolerates noisy 5 V rails typical of power electronics boards, and brown-out detection (configurable in fuses) prevents flash corruption during supply dips - a critical reliability point when motors share the supply rail.

🌐

Communication and Networking Nodes

For serial-networked nodes, the ATmega645 integrates USART, SPI, and TWI (I2C), letting one chip bridge field devices to Modbus-RTU or custom RS-485 loops using an external transceiver. The 16 MIPS core handles CRC computation, frame parsing, and Modbus stacks within its 64 KB Flash, while 4 KB SRAM buffers multiple transaction frames. Bootloader-based field upgrades over the UART keep deployed nodes maintainable. The 10-bit ADC digitizes node health signals (temperature, supply rail) for remote diagnostics. JTAG boundary-scan verifies solder integrity on high-I/O-count production boards. The 5 V core directly drives optocoupler LEDs used for galvanic isolation at network entry points, avoiding level-translation circuitry required with 3.3 V MCUs.

Designhinweise

Estimated: at VCC=5.5 V and worst-case active current in the tens of mA class, decouple each VCC pin (pins 10, 63) with 100 nF ceramics placed within 5 mm, plus one 10 uF bulk capacitor. Keep AVCC (pin 53) connected to VCC through a low-pass filter (e.g., 100 nF plus 10 uH inductor) for ADC accuracy, and never let AVCC deviate more than 300 mV from VCC or the ADC readings and I/O on the analog port become invalid.

Set fuse bits carefully before first ISP programming: enabling the wrong clock-source fuses (e.g., selecting an external crystal when none is fitted) bricks the device to the point that a high-voltage parallel programmer is needed. Connect RESET (pin 58) with a 10 k pull-up; if the JTAGEN fuse is enabled, PC2-PC5 (JTAG pins) will not work as GPIO unless JTAG is disabled or reconfigured. Verify fuse settings against the Microchip datasheet before programming production boards.

At 16 MHz, keep XTAL1/XTAL2 traces short (under 10 mm) and place the crystal and its two load capacitors directly adjacent to pins 56/57 with a ground guard ring. Route the SPI ISP bus (PB4-PB6) away from switching-regulator nodes to prevent false clocking during in-circuit programming. For the JTAG interface on PC2-PC5, series 22-33 ohm resistors reduce ringing on longer traces to the debug header.

Use a solid ground plane on layer 2 beneath the 64-TQFP; connect both GND pins (11, 64) directly to it with short vias. The 14 x 14 mm TQFP has 0.5 mm pitch leads - specify an adequate solder-mask-defined land pattern per Microchip's package drawing and review stencil aperture design for the center region to avoid bridging between the four perimeter lead groups.
