ATMEGA88P-20AU Übersicht

The Microchip Technology ATMEGA88P-20AU is an 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller executing up to 20 MIPS at 20 MHz, with 8 KB ISP Flash (4K x 16), 512 B EEPROM, 1 KB SRAM, 23 general-purpose I/O lines and 8 channels of 10-bit ADC, packaged in a 32-pin TQFP (7 x 7 mm, 0.8 mm pitch).

An 8-bit AVR microcontroller is a Harvard-architecture RISC processor in the broader hierarchy of MCU -> embedded processor -> system-on-chip building blocks. The AVR family is renowned for single-cycle instruction execution, letting most of its 131 instructions complete in one clock cycle and giving predictable, deterministic timing for real-time embedded control.

Key features include picoPower technology with multiple sleep modes for microamp-level standby current, a 6-channel or 8-channel 10-bit ADC with sample rates up to 15 kSPS, three flexible timers (two 8-bit, one 16-bit with compare modes), and both USART and two-wire I2C (TWI) interfaces for connectivity.

Technically, the ATmega88P uses an advanced RISC core with 32 general-purpose working registers directly connected to the ALU, enabling C-friendly code density in small memory. debugWIRE provides on-chip debugging over a single-pin interface, and In-Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) allows field reprogramming of the Flash with read-while-write support.

Typical applications include industrial sensor nodes and motor control (leveraging the ADC and timers), consumer appliances and battery-powered devices (picoPower sleep modes), and hobby/Arduino-class embedded designs needing a low-cost, well-documented AVR.

Design-wise, remember the ADC needs AVCC within 0.3 V of VCC and a stable reference; use a decoupled AVCC pin and a low-noise 2.56 V internal or external AREF for best 10-bit accuracy.

Typische Anwendungen

ATMEGA88P-20AU ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Industrial Sensor Nodes, Battery-Powered Consumer Devices, Motor Control and PWM Generation, Home Automation and IoT End Nodes, Education and Arduino-Class Prototyping, Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety).

🏭

Industrial Sensor Nodes

The ATMEGA88P-20AU fits industrial sensor acquisition nodes because its 8-channel 10-bit ADC (15 kSPS at full resolution) can digitize up to eight analog sensors such as RTDs, strain bridges, and potentiometers without an external converter, while USART, SPI, and TWI interfaces feed results to a host or network. The picoPower technology keeps standby current in the microamp range for battery-backed nodes, and the -40C to +85C industrial temperature rating guarantees operation on the factory floor. Running at 5 V provides superior noise immunity against motor-drive switching noise compared with 3.3 V MCUs. Place the ADC in noise-reduction sleep mode during conversions and decouple AVCC with an LC filter for best effective-number-of-bits.

📱

Battery-Powered Consumer Devices

For battery-powered consumer products such as remote controls, thermostats, and portable meters, the ATMEGA88P-20AU's picoPower technology is the deciding parameter: power-down sleep mode reduces supply current to microamp levels and wake-on-pin-change or watchdog interrupts allow event-driven operation that stretches battery life for years. Its 1.8 V minimum supply supports single lithium coin cell or two alkaline cells directly without a boost converter. The 8 KB Flash is sufficient for state machines, LCD driving, and key decoding typical of consumer products. Combine power-down sleep with the 128 kHz internal oscillator for timekeeping and use the brown-out detector set at 1.8 V to prevent EEPROM corruption at end-of-discharge.

⚙️

Motor Control and PWM Generation

The ATMEGA88P-20AU addresses small motor control tasks with its three timers: two 8-bit timers and one 16-bit timer offering compare and PWM modes. At 20 MHz, a 16-bit PWM with phase-correct mode delivers roughly 1.2 kHz carrier at full resolution - suitable for DC motor speed control and servo actuation - while the 8-bit timers generate complementary faster PWM channels. The USI-free architecture still allows tachometer feedback capture via the 16-bit input capture on ICP1, enabling closed-loop speed regulation. Because PWM outputs (OC0A, OC0B, OC1A, OC1B) map to specific port pins, verify the pin map against your driver stage. For inductive loads, use the dead-time insertion available in compare-output modes or handle it in software.

🧩

Home Automation and IoT End Nodes

In home automation end nodes - wall switches, door sensors, and IR controllers - the ATMEGA88P-20AU provides the USART for RF modules and the TWI (I2C) bus for sensors, while 23 GPIO lines handle relays, LEDs, and switches directly. The picoPower power-save mode with an asynchronous timer enables wake-on-schedule for periodic reporting, keeping coin-cell or AA-battery-powered nodes alive for years. Its 5 V operation drives relays without level shifting, reducing BOM cost versus 3.3 V solutions. Firmware fits comfortably in 8 KB Flash for protocol stacks such as a lightweight MQTT-over-serial bridge to a Wi-Fi module. Add proper TVS protection on field-wired GPIO lines for lightning and ESD robustness in wall-mounted installations.

🔧

Education and Arduino-Class Prototyping

The ATMEGA88P-20AU is a classic entry point for embedded education and breadboard prototyping: the AVR core's 131 mostly single-cycle instructions make assembly transparent, while free GCC toolchains (AVR-GCC) and Microchip Studio provide professional C development at zero license cost. debugWIRE on-chip debugging through the RESET pin gives students hardware breakpoints without a separate debug port, and ICSP programming via an MPLAB SNAP costs under $20. The 8 KB Flash is large enough for complete lab projects yet small enough to teach code-size discipline. Because the pinout is shared with the ATmega328P Arduino boards, code written on this device ports upward without hardware changes, forming a natural learning ladder from bare-metal to Arduino frameworks.

🚗

Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety)

For non-safety automotive body electronics such as seat-position memory, mirror controllers, and interior lighting, the ATMEGA88P-20AU's -40C to +85C industrial range covers most cabin-temperature requirements, and its 5 V logic matches legacy automotive 5 V sensor ecosystems. The 10-bit ADC reads position potentiometers and NTC temperature sensors directly, while the 16-bit timer's input capture decodes LIN-bus-style serial wake signals over the USART. Load-dump transients must be handled by a upstream regulator rated for the 40 V automotive transients since the MCU pin limit is VCC+0.5 V. For designs requiring AEC-Q100 qualification, select a certified AVR variant instead - the ATmega88P itself is not AEC-Q100 listed.

The ATMEGA88A-AU is a cost-optimized refresh of the ATmega88 family with the same pinout, 32-TQFP package, 8 KB Flash, and 20 MHz speed as the ATMEGA88P-20AU. The 'P' version adds picoPower technology for lower sleep current and wider 1.8 V to 5.5 V operation. If your board already runs below 2.7 V or relies on microamp sleep modes, stay with the 88P; otherwise the 88A is a direct substitute.
Is ATMEGA88P-20AU the same as ATMEGA168PA or ATMEGA328P?
No, they are different memory sizes but share the same 32-TQFP pinout. The ATmega88P has 8 KB Flash / 1 KB SRAM; the ATmega168PA has 16 KB / 1 KB; the ATmega328P has 32 KB / 2 KB. All are pin-to-pin compatible drop-ins in TQFP-32, so you can migrate upward in Flash without PCB changes - only the device signature and option fuses differ in the programmer.
What is the ATMEGA88P-20AU pinout in the 32-TQFP package?
Pin 1 is PC6/RESET, pins 2-6 are PD0-PD4, pin 7 is VCC, pin 8 is GND, pins 9-10 are PB6/XTAL1 and PB7/XTAL2, pins 11-13 are PD5-PD7, pins 14-19 are PB0-PB5, pin 20 is AVCC, pin 21 is AREF, pin 22 is GND, and pins 23-28 are PC0-PC5 (ADC0-ADC5). See the pinout diagram on this page, which matches the Microchip ATmega48PA/88PA datasheet.
Is ATMEGA88P-20AU suitable for battery-powered applications?
Yes. The 'P' in ATmega88P denotes picoPower technology, offering multiple sleep modes (idle, ADC noise reduction, power-down, power-save, standby) that reduce supply current to microamp or sub-microamp levels. With a 1.8 V minimum supply, it suits single or two-cell battery designs. For lowest leakage, disable unused peripherals and use power-down sleep between ADC conversions.
How do I program and debug the ATMEGA88P-20AU?
Program it via In-Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) using the SPI pins (PB3 MOSI, PB4 MISO, PB5 SCK) and RESET with a tool such as the MPLAB SNAP, PICkit 4, or AVR ISP mkII. For debugging, debugWIRE uses a single wire (the RESET pin) with an AVR Dragon, JTAGICE3, or Atmel-ICE, enabling on-chip breakpoints without extra debug pins.
Is ATMEGA88P-20AU RoHS compliant?
Yes, the ATMEGA88P-20AU is RoHS compliant. DigiKey and Mouser list the device as RoHS-compliant with the GREEN package option noted in Microchip's part numbering, indicating lead-free, halogen-reduced construction. For REACH, conflict-minerals, and halogen-free status details, consult the official Microchip compliance documentation for your specific date code.
When should I choose ATMEGA88P-20AU over ATMEGA328P-AU?
Choose the ATMEGA88P-20AU when your firmware fits in 8 KB Flash and you need the lowest cost in the family - it typically prices 30-50% below the 32 KB ATmega328P. Choose the ATmega328P-AU when your code size approaches 7 KB, you need 2 KB SRAM for buffers, or you want compatibility with Arduino-class ecosystems. Both share the identical TQFP-32 footprint, so a board can accept either for late-stage upgrades.
What is the lead time for ATMEGA88P-20AU?
The ATMEGA88P-20AU is actively stocked and can ship immediately from XAIPART and major distributors - Heisener reports in stock with can-ship-immediately status as of 2026-09-19. Because lead time varies with order quantity, request a quote for confirmed scheduling; large production quantities may require standard factory lead time.
What is the maximum ADC sample rate of the ATMEGA88P-20AU?
The 10-bit ADC achieves up to 15 kSPS at maximum resolution when the ADC clock is set between 50 kHz and 200 kHz as required for full 10-bit accuracy. Running the ADC at higher prescaler settings trades resolution for speed. The ADC multiplexes 8 single-ended channels (6 on TQFP PDIP variants) plus differential and differential-with-gain modes.
Can ATMEGA88P-20AU run at 5V and full 20 MHz speed?
Yes. According to the AVR family speed-versus-voltage derating curves, the ATmega88P runs at its full 20 MHz (20 MIPS) when powered at 4.5 V to 5.5 V, making it well matched to 5 V industrial systems where noise immunity is superior to 3.3 V. At 2.7 V to 5.5 V the limit is 20 MHz only above 4.5 V; below that, maximum frequency must be scaled down accordingly.

  • Trade-off: half the Flash of the 168PA (vs. ATMEGA168PA-AU)

Designhinweise

Connect AVCC (pin 20) to VCC through an LC low-pass filter (e.g., 10 uH inductor and 100 nF + 100 nF ceramic capacitors) even when the ADC is unused - the datasheet requires AVCC within 0.3 V of VCC and a direct VCC connection couples digital switching noise into ADC reference circuits. Enable the internal 2.56 V reference only after allowing its settle time, or drive AREF with a precision external reference for best accuracy.

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 2 mm of each VCC/GND pair (pins 7/8 and pin 22) and a 100 nF capacitor at AVCC and AREF. Route the XTAL1/XTAL2 crystal traces (pins 9-10) short and guarded with ground, away from high-dv/dt PWM traces on PB1-PB3. The exposed QFP center area should have a grounded via array to lower ground inductance.

DebugWIRE shares the RESET pin (pin 1) with programming - once the DWEN fuse is set, SPI programming is disabled until debugWIRE is disabled from the debugger. Also, do not clock the device at 20 MHz below 4.5 V supply; the AVR speed-grade curves derate maximum frequency at lower VCC, and out-of-spec overclocking causes Flash read corruption and erratic resets.

Estimated: in a battery node running at 3.3 V with the MCU in power-down sleep at typical picoPower sub-5 uA levels plus a 10 kOhm pull-up network drawing 330 uA continuously, the pull-ups dominate battery drain - configure unused pins as inputs with pull-ups disabled and drive unused outputs low to minimize sleep current.
