ATSAML11E15A-AF Übersicht

The Microchip Technology ATSAML11E15A-AF is a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M23 microcontroller with ARM TrustZone technology, operating at up to 32 MHz, delivering 32 KB of Flash and 8 KB of SRAM in a 32-pin TQFP (7x7 mm) package. It is the industry's first ultra-low-power Cortex-M23 MCU with chip-level security, consuming less than 25 uA/MHz in active mode and less than 100 nA in sleep mode, designed for IoT edge nodes that require both low energy and hardware-rooted security. The "-AF" suffix denotes the TQFP-32 tray packaging variant of the base ATSAML11E15A part.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory (Flash), working memory (SRAM), and a rich set of peripherals — timers, ADC/DAC, communication interfaces, and security modules — into one device. Within the broader semiconductor hierarchy, microcontrollers sit under microprocessors and embedded controllers and are widely deployed in battery-powered IoT, sensor processing, motor control, and human-machine interface designs. The SAM L11 family combines a Cortex-M23 core (ARMv8-M baseline with TrustZone extension) with on-chip crypto acceleration, secure key storage, and chip-level tamper resistance — a stack normally reserved for higher-cost secure elements.

Key differentiating specifications include: ARM TrustZone-M for hardware-enforced secure/non-secure partitioning; integrated crypto accelerators (AES, SHA, TRNG); an enhanced Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC) supporting noise-robust capacitive touch; SERCOM configurable serial interfaces (up to 6); 12-bit ADC, 10-bit DAC, and on-chip op-amps. The device supports 1.62–3.63 V core supply with separate backup domain, brown-out detection, and RTC running from a 32.768 kHz crystal or internal oscillator.

Architecturally, the Cortex-M23 core executes the Thumb/Thumb-2 instruction set with hardware single-cycle multiply, delivering 0.9 DMIPS/MHz — adequate for sensor-fusion loops and secure boot sequences. The SAM L11 platform layers TrustZone on top of the Cortex-M23 baseline: secure code runs in the protected region with hardware isolation, and the on-chip crypto block eliminates the latency of external secure-element I2C transactions. Compared with the Cortex-M0+ based SAM L10, the L11 adds TrustZone and the crypto subsystem at the cost of marginally higher active current.

Typical applications include secure IoT end nodes (TLS handshake acceleration, secure boot, OTA key management), battery-powered smart sensors (touch buttons, environmental monitoring, medical wearables), and edge devices requiring hardware-attested firmware identity (asset tracking, smart locks, industrial sensors). Designers choose the SAM L11 when they need both Arm TrustZone isolation AND low active/sleep power in the same device — without paying for a Cortex-M33 class core.

When designing with this MCU, ensure your linker script enforces TrustZone region boundaries (SAU/NSC settings) and that your secure boot loader validates firmware signatures before jumping to non-secure application code. The on-chip PTC requires careful PCB layout — keep the touch sensor traces short and shield them from high-current switching nodes. Plan an external 32.768 kHz crystal only if you need RTC-grade timing; otherwise the internal oscillator is sufficient for sleep-mode wake scheduling.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in same-package alternatives from the same SAM L11 family, and practical TrustZone + low-power design notes not collated in the manufacturer datasheet.

The 32 KB Flash fits a LoRaWAN stack plus a sensor-fusion task.

💊

Medical Wearables & Disposable Health Patches

The ATSAML11E15A-AF is well matched to disposable and short-life medical wearables where low BOM, low power, and data authenticity are all critical. The integrated 12-bit ADC captures biopotential signals, while the on-chip OPAMP buffers the electrode front-end without external components. TrustZone isolates the patient data signing routine from the BLE transport stack, helping meet FDA cybersecurity expectations. The 32-pin TQFP fits a credit-card sized patch, and <100 nA sleep extends the patch lifetime to a full monitoring cycle on a coin cell.

💡

Capacitive Touch Control Panels (Appliances / Home Automation)

The ATSAML11E15A-AF drives appliance and home-automation control panels that need robust capacitive touch plus a secure Wi-Fi/BLE link. The enhanced PTC supports proximity-sensing touch through 5 mm acrylic overlays and tolerates water-film false-trigger scenarios. TrustZone keeps the Wi-Fi credentials in a secure region while exposing only an API to the application processor, and the <25 uA/MHz active current lets the panel sit idle most of the day without taxing the wall supply. Six SERCOMs drive RGB LED indicators, haptic feedback, and an external radio.

Wichtigste Unterscheidungsmerkmale

  • Hardware-rooted TrustZone isolation on a Cortex-M23 platform (vs. ATSAML10E15A-AF)
  • Doubling the Flash for free on a pin-compatible upgrade path (vs. ATSAML11E14A-AF)
  • Same-family upgrade to 64 KB Flash / 16 KB SRAM on identical footprint (vs. ATSAML11D16A-MF)

Designhinweise

Estimated: At 32 MHz active mode the ATSAML11E15A-AF draws under 25 uA/MHz (≈ 800 uA total). With an average duty cycle of 1% active and 99% sleep at <100 nA, the average current budget is dominated by sleep current. A 220 mAh CR2032 coin cell can theoretically support >2 years of operation. Configure the SUPC controller to gate unused peripherals (SERCOMs, ADC, OPAMP) before entering Standby sleep mode 3 to minimise leakage. Enable the on-chip voltage regulator's low-power mode (LDO vs Buck) to extend battery life further when VDD > 2.5 V.

Place the 32.768 kHz crystal within 5 mm of PA18 (XOUT) and PA19 (XIN) traces, keep the traces short and symmetrically matched, and surround them with a ground guard ring. The exposed thermal pad on the TQFP-32 package is internally bonded to GND — tie it to a solid ground pour for thermal and electrical stability. Decouple VDD and VDDIO with 100 nF X7R ceramic caps placed within 2 mm of each supply pin, plus a bulk 4.7 uF tantalum or ceramic cap on the main VDD rail. Route SWD signals (SWDIO/SWCLK) away from high-current switching nodes to avoid noise coupling during debug.

Do not assume Cortex-M23 firmware is binary-compatible with Cortex-M0+ — the Thumb-2 instruction set differs and floating-point math libraries must be re-compiled. When using TrustZone, configure the SAU and IDAU BEFORE enabling any interrupts, otherwise non-secure peripherals cannot access shared memory regions. The Bootloader entry pin (PA27) must be left floating or pulled high only at reset; an unintended low will hijack the boot flow into the SAM-BA bootloader. Verify that your debugger (MPLAB PICkit 4 / Atmel-ICE) supplies VDD_TARGET to the MCU during programming — an under-powered debug session will silently fail to erase Flash.

For capacitive touch designs using the enhanced PTC, keep the sensor electrodes on a separate PCB layer surrounded by a ground pour with a 5 mm hatch gap. Avoid running noisy digital traces (PWM, switching regulators, radio) directly under the touch electrodes or in the same layer. The PTC self-calibration routine requires at least 16 ms after POR — add this delay to your firmware initialization sequence. Configure the SERCOM peripheral pads with the correct peripheral multiplexer (PMUX) settings via the PORT group registers before enabling SERCOM clocks, otherwise I2C/SPI transactions will be silently dropped.
