LTC2222CUK-11 Übersicht

The Analog Devices LTC2222CUK-11 is an 11-bit, 105 Msps pipelined analog-to-digital converter housed in a 48-pin QFN (7x7 mm) package. It samples at 105 Msps with 65.4 dB SNR (to 140 MHz input), 80 dB SFDR (to 150 MHz input), and a 775 MHz full-power bandwidth sample-and-hold. The device operates from a single 3.3 V supply and dissipates approximately 475 mW, with CMOS-compatible digital outputs.

A pipelined ADC is a multi-stage converter that interleaves sample-and-hold and residue amplifier blocks to digitize analog signals at high speed while maintaining resolution. In the wider signal-chain hierarchy, the LTC2222CUK-11 sits between a front-end analog amplifier/buffer (typically an RF transformer or op-amp driver) and downstream digital processing - a DSP, FPGA, or custom ASIC - making it a critical high-speed bridge in communications, instrumentation, and imaging systems. The -11 derivative delivers 11-bit resolution (rather than the 12-bit native LTC2222) when cost or data-rate scaling is more important than absolute ENOB.

Key differentiating features include 0.15 ps RMS ultra-low aperture jitter, which enables accurate undersampling of IF frequencies in communications receivers, single 3.3 V operation that simplifies board power design, and CMOS outputs that interface directly with ASICs and FPGAs without level shifters. The 7x7 mm 48-QFN exposed-pad package provides low thermal resistance for sustained full-rate operation.

Applications for this part include cellular base-station IF sampling, cable-headend downstream QAM digitizers, test-and-measurement bench instruments, ultrasound beamforming front ends, and software-defined radio receivers. It is widely used wherever a moderately priced, low-jitter ADC serves as the analog-domain gateway into a digital signal-processing engine.

When designing with this ADC, allocate a low-noise LDO for the analog AVDD rail because high-frequency sampling current transients couple directly into the reference ladder; a 1uF + 0.1uF ceramic bypass on the ADC reference pins must be placed within 2 mm of the package. This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, and practical decoupling guidance not assembled in the manufacturer datasheet alone.

Typische Anwendungen

LTC2222CUK-11 ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Cellular Base-Station IF Sampling, Cable-Headend Downstream QAM Digitizer, Test and Measurement Instrumentation, Ultrasound Beamforming Front-End, Software-Defined Radio Receiver, Wideband Radar Signal Capture.

🌐

Cellular Base-Station IF Sampling

The LTC2222CUK-11 is well suited to IF sampling in cellular base-station receivers because its 775 MHz analog input bandwidth lets it directly undersample 70-140 MHz IF strips. According to the datasheet, 0.15 ps RMS aperture jitter preserves 65.4 dB SNR up to 140 MHz, enough for single-carrier GSM/UMTS and CDMA2K digital-IF receivers. Placed after the downconversion mixer and SAW filter, it digitizes the IF stream into a parallel 11-bit CMOS bus feeding an FPGA or DSP running the channelizer. The trade-off versus 14/16-bit parts is lower instantaneous dynamic range but a much lower power draw of 475 mW, valuable when the receiver chassis houses many channels.

📺

Cable-Headend Downstream QAM Digitizer

In cable-television headend equipment the LTC2222CUK-11 digitizes 44 MHz or higher IF frequencies carrying 256-QAM downstream channels. Per the datasheet, 80 dB SFDR at 150 MHz input directly meets the adjacent-channel rejection and MER targets for QAM demodulation, while the 11-bit resolution is sufficient for digitizing a single 6 MHz QAM channel at acceptable cost. Positioned after the up/down-conversion stage and surface-acoustic-wave filter, the converter feeds a demodulator ASIC over an 11-bit CMOS bus. The 3.3 V single supply simplifies the headend chassis power-distribution bus, and the CMOS outputs interface to legacy demodulators without level shifters.

🔧

Test and Measurement Instrumentation

Bench instruments such as digitizing oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and signal analyzers benefit from the LTC2222CUK-11's 775 MHz bandwidth and 105 Msps throughput when capturing repetitive RF signals. The low 0.15 ps RMS aperture jitter enables equivalent-time undersampling when tracking fine edge features of triggerable periodic waveforms, while the 65.4 dB SNR ensures capture fidelity for class-1 instrumentation. Used as the input digitizer of a 100 MHz class real-time oscilloscope, the converter's CMOS outputs stream directly into an FPGA processing pipeline that performs triggering, decimation, and display update. Cooling is straightforward thanks to 475 mW dissipation in a 48-QFN exposed-pad package.

💊

Ultrasound Beamforming Front-End

Medical ultrasound imaging systems rely on parallel ADC arrays to digitize multi-channel receive paths in the 1-15 MHz range. The LTC2222CUK-11's 11-bit dynamic range and 105 Msps throughput align well with mid-tier ultrasound channels where the trade-off between channel count and per-channel resolution is critical. Placed after each channel's LNA and TGC stage, the converter outputs 11-bit CMOS digital streams feeding the beamformer ASIC and back-end image processor. Power dissipation of 475 mW per channel is acceptable when beamforming boards sit in thermally controlled enclosures, and the exposed-pad QFN package simplifies heatsink-less board layout. The low aperture jitter also benefits harmonic-imaging modes that sample at the second harmonic.

📻

Software-Defined Radio Receiver

Software-defined radio designs leverage the LTC2222CUK-11 to directly undersample VHF and UHF amateur/aviation bands without analog downconversion. With a 775 MHz input bandwidth and 80 dB SFDR up to 150 MHz, it captures IF signals at the antenna chain output and delivers them to a host FPGA or DSP running demodulation software for FM, AM, SSB, and weak-signal digital modes. The 11-bit resolution comfortably handles narrow-band modes while the 3.3 V single-supply operation simplifies portable-SDR battery-powered designs. Drop-in compatibility with the LTC2207IUK lets designers select between cost-optimized 11-bit and higher-linearity 16-bit versions on the same PCB.

✈️

Wideband Radar Signal Capture

Radar signal-processing subsystems use the LTC2222CUK-11 as the receiver ADC for short-range surveillance and weather radar intermediate-frequency sampling. The 11-bit resolution and 105 Msps throughput capture pulse-compressed waveforms where amplitude resolution beyond 11 bits adds little to detection probability but increases cost significantly. Positioned after the IF amplifier and matched filter, the converter's low aperture jitter preserves range-Doppler sidelobe performance, while its 80 dB SFDR rejects spurs from jamming signals and clock feedthrough. The CMOS output interfaces directly to FPGA-based range-Doppler pre-processors in modern phased-array radar boards.

Designhinweise

The AVDD pins (11, 12, 46, 47) and DVDD pin (14) must each be decoupled by 1uF and 0.1uF ceramic capacitors placed within 2 mm of the package with short, wide traces to handle the 475 mW dynamic switching current. Use a low-noise LDO such as the LT1764 for the analog AVDD rail because the ADC reference ladder is sensitive to supply noise. Estimated: dynamic switching transients can reach 50 mA peak, so the regulator must hold regulation under step load.

The exposed thermal pad is the primary heat-removal path and must be soldered to a grounded copper pour no smaller than 1 square inch on the top layer with thermal vias stitching to inner ground planes. Route the 11 CMOS data bits and the clock as 50-ohm microstrip with characteristic impedance matched to the FPGA bank. Differential analog input traces (AIN+/AIN-) should be routed as a tightly-coupled 100-ohm differential pair with the trace length delta kept under 0.5 mm to preserve AC balance.

Do not run digital output switching current under the analog input or reference pins - return digital ground separately and tie it to analog ground only at a single point under the IC. Place the 0.1uF reference bypass caps on REFHB (pins 7-8) and the 0.1uF + 2.2uF + 1uF cascade on REFLA (pins 9-10) directly at the pins, with the smallest 0.1uF cap nearest. Estimated: 1 inch of additional reference-trace length above the bypass pad can degrade SFDR by 5 dB at 150 MHz input.
