LTC2662HUH-16#PBF Übersicht
What is a current-source DAC? A current-output digital-to-analog converter converts a digital code into a precise analog current, rather than voltage. Within the data-converter hierarchy, the LTC2662 belongs to the DAC family, more specifically current-steering or current-source DACs, which are widely used to drive laser diodes, precision actuators, programmable current bias, and process-control loops. Compared with voltage-output DACs, current-output parts eliminate output buffers and headroom-loss, allowing the load to sit at a high compliance voltage while the DAC itself drops just 1 V.
Key features of the LTC2662HUH-16#PBF include guaranteed 1 V dropout at 200 mA per channel, 32 V load compliance, per-channel SoftSpan programmable full-scale current from 3 mA to 300 mA, a wide supply range (AVDD up to 5.5 V, load rail up to 32 V), and a flexible serial SPI-compatible interface with per-channel readback. The device uses a precision internal reference and offers daisy-chain capability for multi-device synchronization.
The architecture is built around five matched current cells steered by a 16-bit segmented architecture. The internal reference and precision thin-film resistors deliver INL of approximately 1 LSB and DNL of ±0.5 LSB on the -16 grade. The wide compliance window (1 V to 32 V headroom over the load) lets the LTC2322662 directly drive H-bridges, optocouplers, and laser diodes without external driver stages.
Typical applications include laser-diode driver bias for telecom and instrumentation, programmable current sources for industrial process control, optical attenuators, precision actuator drive in medical and test equipment, and 4 mA to 20 mA / 0 mA to 20 mA loop-driving when combined with an external boost stage. The 32-QFN footprint fits dense PCB designs and keeps channel-to-channel thermal coupling manageable.
Design tip: decouple the AVDD pin with a 10 uF + 100 nF pair placed within 5 mm of the IC, and reserve a small copper island under the exposed pad to draw heat out of the package when more than two channels are operated near 200 mA. Ensure the load path returns to the LTC2662's GND to avoid ground-loop errors in the high-compliance current output.

Typische Anwendungen
LTC2662HUH-16#PBF ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Laser Diode Driver Bias, Industrial Process-Control Current Loop, Programmable Attenuator Bias for RF Modules, Precision Actuator Drive in Test & Measurement, Optical Module TEC Current Bias, LED Driver Bias for Multi-Channel Lighting.
Laser Diode Driver Bias
The LTC2662HUH-16#PBF's 1 V dropout at 200 mA and 32 V load compliance let it directly bias laser diodes from a high-voltage rail without an intermediate driver stage. The 16-bit resolution gives 3 mA to 300 mA SoftSpan full-scale steps of about 4.6 uA per LSB at full scale, which is finer than the typical 100 uA to 1 mA bias-precision requirement for telecom and instrumentation laser modules. Used in APC loops, the part supplies the bias current to the laser cathode while a monitor photodiode closes the control loop.
Empfohlen
Industrial Process-Control Current Loop
For 4 mA to 20 mA and 0 mA to 20 mA industrial current loops, the LTC2662HUH-16#PBF produces a precisely controlled 3 mA to 20 mA output that is fed through an external boost stage to develop the loop compliance voltage. The 16-bit resolution translates to less than 1 uA per LSB at 20 mA full scale, which exceeds the 4-20 mA standard's 0.1 percent accuracy requirement. H-grade operation (-40 C to +125 C) tolerates outdoor cabinet and factory-floor thermal swings.

Programmable Attenuator Bias for RF Modules
P-I-N attenuator and MMIC bias networks need a clean, settable current source that can sit at a high compliance voltage while the attenuator is biased. The LTC2662HUH-16#PBF's 32 V compliance and 1 V dropout allow direct biasing of multi-section P-I-N attenuators from a single 24 V rail, and the 5-channel count lets one part drive all sections. The 16-bit SoftSpan range covers the few mA bias typical for PIN diodes without external scaling resistors.

Precision Actuator Drive in Test & Measurement
Test and measurement instruments that drive MEMS mirrors, voice coils, and piezo actuators need clean, programmable current with low noise. The LTC2662HUH-16#PBF provides 5 independently settable current outputs that drive each actuator from a single 32-QFN device, eliminating the per-channel op-amp + sense-resistor chain. Resolution of about 4.6 uA per LSB at 300 mA full scale is sufficient for sub-micron positioning accuracy.

Optical Module TEC Current Bias
Thermo-electric coolers (TECs) in optical transceivers require bidirectional current control up to several hundred mA. With the LTC2662HUH-16#PBF placed in a bridge with another part, the 5 channels can supply each TEC branch. The 32 V compliance handles 12 V to 24 V optical-module rails, and 16-bit resolution gives precise temperature control (0.01 C) when driving a TEC against an NTC feedback loop.

LED Driver Bias for Multi-Channel Lighting
High-brightness LED arrays in machine-vision or stage-lighting fixtures need individually settable per-channel currents up to several hundred mA. The LTC2662HUH-16#PBF delivers 5 channels of 3 mA to 300 mA programmable current that can directly bias 1 W to 5 W LED strings from a 24 V or 32 V rail, without per-string MOSFET drivers. The 16-bit resolution provides fine-grained dimming for cinematography or microscopy illumination.

Designhinweise
Estimated: with all 5 channels at 200 mA into a 1 V dropout, internal dissipation reaches roughly 1 W. The 32-QFN (5x5) exposed pad must be soldered to at least 100 mm^2 of top-layer copper, with thermal vias to inner planes, to keep junction rise below 30 C at 25 C ambient. Without the pad soldered, theta_JA rises above 70 C/W and the part can hit thermal shutdown at full load.
Place a 10 uF X7R + 100 nF X7R pair on AVDD and a separate 1 uF + 100 nF pair on IOVCC within 5 mm of their respective pins. The high-compliance load rail (up to 32 V) does not need decoupling on the DAC itself but should be bypassed at the load end. Adding a ferrite bead between the load rail and the part can suppress load-transient ringing into the high-impedance current output.
Route each IOUT trace as a Kelvin-style pair back to the part's GND pad to avoid ground-loop errors that show up as 1-2 LSB current errors. Keep digital lines (SCK, SDI, SDO, CS/LD, CLR) at least 3 mm from IOUT traces and cross them only at right angles. The exposed pad (EP) must be a continuous copper island with no traces routed through it.
Do not exceed 32 V on the load compliance rail or 5.5 V on AVDD; both abs-max limits cause permanent damage. Ensure CS/LD is held low for the entire SPI frame, otherwise data is not latched. The internal reference requires a 100 nF cap on the REF pin; omitting it increases noise and worsens DC linearity. Finally, do not float unused IOUT pins - tie them to a defined load or to GND to prevent leakage paths.
Compliance-Informationen
