MAX1156AEUP+ Übersicht

The Maxim Integrated MAX1156AEUP+ is a 14-bit, 135 ksps, low-power, single-supply successive-approximation analog-to-digital converter (ADC) featuring automatic power-down, a factory-trimmed internal clock, and a bipolar analog input range, housed in a 20-pin TSSOP package. Operating from a single +4.75V to +5.25V analog supply, the device delivers true 14-bit resolution with no missing codes and supports input signals from 0 to +4.096V (unipolar) or ±4.096V (bipolar) when driven through the dedicated bipolar input path.

An ADC (analog-to-digital converter) is a data-conversion integrated circuit that samples a continuous-time analog signal and quantizes each sample into a binary code for digital processing. Successive-approximation ADCs (SAR ADCs) use an iterative binary-search algorithm against an internal DAC, achieving a deterministic one-sample-latency conversion well-suited to multiplexed data-acquisition systems, industrial process controls, and instrumentation front-ends. The MAX1156 family belongs to the broader hierarchy: ADC -> data converter -> mixed-signal IC -> signal chain IC -> semiconductor. Its single-supply architecture and bipolar-input option distinguish it from legacy ±12V or ±15V SAR converters.

Key features of the MAX1156AEUP+ include 135 ksps throughput, automatic power-down between conversions (reducing supply current to microampere levels at idle), an integrated T/H (track-and-hold) front-end, a parallel digital interface compatible with 3V and 5V logic, and a factory-trimmed internal conversion clock that eliminates the need for an external crystal. The device draws approximately 1.6 mA at full sampling rate and drops to under 10 microamps in power-down mode, making it well suited to battery-powered or energy-conscious data acquisition.

Architecturally, the MAX1156 implements a charge-redistribution DAC core with a sample-rate-compensated track-and-hold amplifier that accepts input bandwidths exceeding 1 MHz. The bipolar-input topology scales and level-shifts a differential ±4.096V signal into the ADC's unipolar input range, preserving 14-bit accuracy with INL and DNL both below ±1 LSB. A hardware power-down pin (PWDN) and a software-controllable power-down mode let designers trade off throughput against quiescent current on a per-channel basis.

Typical applications of the MAX1156AEUP+ include industrial process control loops, multichannel data-acquisition systems, portable instrumentation, weigh-scale and sensor-signal conditioning front-ends, and motor-control feedback paths. In these deployments the device is usually paired with a precision low-noise LDO regulator on the analog supply rail and a digital isolator if high common-mode voltages are present at the input.

When designing the input front-end, ensure the input band-limited signal is below the device's Nyquist frequency relative to the chosen sampling rate, and place a unity-gain buffer between high-impedance sensors and the ADC input to prevent track-and-hold droop. Decouple AVDD with a 10 microfarad tantalum in parallel with a 0.1 microfarat ceramic placed within 5 mm of the supply pin.

Typische Anwendungen

MAX1156AEUP+ ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Industrial Process Control Loops, Portable Battery-Powered Instrumentation, Multichannel Data Acquisition Systems, Weigh Scales and Load Cell Signal Conditioning, Motor Control Current Sensing, Medical Monitoring Signal Acquisition.

🏭

Industrial Process Control Loops

The MAX1156AEUP+ is ideal for closed-loop industrial process control where 14-bit accuracy is needed but channel count is modest. Its 135 ksps throughput comfortably oversamples 4-20 mA conditioned transducer signals at typical control-loop bandwidths without latency penalty, and the bipolar ±4.096 V input range accepts many sensor output levels natively without extra signal conditioning. Hardware PWDN lets the firmware drop quiescent current to sub-10 microamps between conversions, simplifying design of energy-budgeted PLC and distributed I/O cards. Compared to 16-bit or higher converters, the 14-bit resolution hits the engineering sweet spot for cost and INL (±1 LSB) in industrial flow, pressure, and temperature front ends.

🔧

Portable Battery-Powered Instrumentation

Battery-powered data loggers, handheld multimeters, and field instruments benefit from the MAX1156AEUP+ low-duty-cycle architecture. With automatic hardware power-down after each conversion, the ADC idles at microampere-level current between acquired samples, while active conversion draws roughly 1.6 mA from a single +5 V rail. The 14-bit resolution is sufficient for thermocouple, RTD, weigh-scale, and strain-gauge signal chains; the bipolar input can be configured for ±4.096 V inputs from bridge sensors. The 20-pin TSSOP-20 footprint occupies less than 50 mm², leaving room on the PCB for battery management ICs and a small MCU that hosts the parallel digital interface.

🖥️

Multichannel Data Acquisition Systems

For multichannel data-acquisition systems the MAX1156AEUP+ pairs naturally with an external 8:1 or 16:1 analog input multiplexer ahead of its single ADC channel, controlled by an FPGA or MCU. Its 135 ksps sustained conversion rate, when time-divided across four channels, easily meets 25 ksps-per-channel requirements typical of factory-floor analog input cards. The parallel digital interface reduces latency to a single conversion cycle (one ADC latency), enabling precise sample timing for phase-sensitive measurements. Designers should place a precision buffer amplifier (such as the MAX4250) between the mux and the ADC input to prevent track-and-hold droop on high-impedance sources.

⚖️

Weigh Scales and Load Cell Signal Conditioning

Bridge-type load cells and weigh scales demand low-noise DC-coupled measurement through a wide dynamic range. The MAX1156AEUP+ bipolar ±4.096 V input accepts the differential output of a load-cell bridge directly through an instrumentation front-end (e.g. a MAX4209 instrumentation amplifier). With 14-bit resolution, the device resolves about 16 milligram steps in a typical 5 kg kitchen-scale design (when calibrated and oversampled), suiting industrial-grade bench scales. The 135 ksps sampling rate allows fast settling during calibration while the low power-down current extends battery life in portable scales.

🏭

Motor Control Current Sensing

Three-phase BLDC and stepper motor control loops demand fast, accurately timed current feedback from shunt resistors or Hall-effect sensors. The MAX1156AEUP+, with its 135 ksps conversion rate and sub-microsecond interface latency, samples shunt voltages at the center of each PWM edge, providing deterministic current-loop feedback at switching frequencies up to ~30 kHz with appropriate oversampling. Its bipolar ±4.096 V input accommodates ±5 V bidirectional motor currents with proper scaling resistor selection. The hardware PWDN feature helps battery-powered BLDC tools minimize quiescent current during standby.

💊

Medical Monitoring Signal Acquisition

Patient-monitoring instruments such as blood-pressure cuffs, pulse oximeters, and body-impedance analyzers use low-bandwidth high-resolution sampling. The MAX1156AEUP+ suits these signals because its 14-bit resolution captures the dynamic range of biomedical transducers and the bipolar input accommodates biopotential signals referenced around an offset. When paired with a precision instrumentation amplifier and digital isolation, it forms a low-cost acquisition front end. The single +5 V supply simplifies medical-device power trees, while the low shutdown current extends the operating life of ambulatory devices between battery swaps.

Designhinweise

Decouple AVDD with a 10 microfarad tantalum or ceramic bulk capacitor in parallel with a 0.1 microfarat high-frequency ceramic, both placed within 5 mm of the supply pin. Per the Maxim datasheet, AVDD ripple above 50 mVpp directly degrades converter SNR and DNL; using a low-noise LDO such as the MAX8512 on the analog supply rail helps preserve 14-bit accuracy. Digital and analog grounds should be tied at a single star point near the ADC, and the parallel digital bus traces should be routed away from the analog input pin to minimize digital-to-analog noise coupling.

Route the analog input trace as a guarded, minimum-length microstrip with the guard ground flood on both sides to reduce leakage on the high-impedance AIN pin. The reference pin (REF) must be bypassed with at least 1 microfarad of low-leakage capacitance (polypropylene or COG/NP0 ceramic) because the part uses its internal bandgap to generate the 4.096 V reference. Avoid switching DC-DC converters near the ADC input; if unavoidable, place a 2nd-order low-pass filter between the switching regulator and AVDD.

Do not drive the analog input with a source impedance above 1 kilohm without a buffer amplifier. Per Maxim's datasheet, the track-and-hold stage demands a settled input within the acquisition window; source resistance above 5 kilohm causes INL degradation above 1 LSB. Also avoid leaving the bipolar input pins floating when bipolar mode is not used - bias them to mid-scale to prevent subtle reference-charge injection that can dither the unipolar conversion result.

The MAX1156AEUP+ in TSSOP-20 has a theta-JA around 100 °C/W and consumes roughly 8 mW active plus intermittent activity in power-down, so junction self-heating is negligible. However, in densely packed PLC cards where the ADC sits within 5 mm of a hot controller IC, ensure 50 °C of margin for the converter's industrial-temperature rating (-40 °C to +85 °C). Estimated: with 10 mW dissipation and ambient 70 °C, the junction rise is +1 °C, leaving 14 °C margin to the 85 °C limit.
