MAX1156BEUP+ Übersicht

The Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) MAX1156BEUP+ is a 14-bit, 135ksps, single-supply successive-approximation analog-to-digital converter (SAR ADC) with a bipolar analog input range of 0V to 10V (unipolar) and true bipolar ±5V or ±10V operation, housed in a 20-pin TSSOP package. The MAX1156 is part of the MAX1156/MAX1158/MAX1174 family of low-power ADCs designed for industrial process control, data acquisition, and instrumentation applications requiring precision measurement of high-voltage bipolar signals.

A successive-approximation ADC (SAR ADC) is a type of analog-to-digital converter that uses a binary search algorithm through an internal comparator and DAC network to digitize an analog input signal. SAR ADCs offer an excellent balance of speed, resolution, and power consumption: they require no pipeline delay, provide deterministic latency, and typically consume only a few milliwatts of power. Within the broader hierarchy of data converters, the MAX1156 sits in the SAR ADC category, which itself belongs to the data acquisition IC family and ultimately the power management and mixed-signal semiconductor ecosystem.

Key features include true bipolar input ranges without external signal-shaping circuitry, 135 ksps sampling rate, integrated 4.096V internal reference (MAX1156), low power consumption of typically 6 mA at 135 ksps, automatic power-down between conversions reducing supply current to 1 µA, hardware-configurable analog input ranges (0 to 5V, 0 to 10V, ±5V, ±10V), and a high-speed SPI/QSPI/MICROWIRE-compatible serial interface. The device operates from a single +5V analog supply and a +3V to +5V digital supply, simplifying peripheral power management design.

The MAX1156BEUP+ uses a charge-balancing successive-approximation architecture with an input protection network and a track-and-hold block, allowing the ADC to directly accept industrial-level bipolar voltages that would otherwise require external op-amps. The internal 4.096V reference (MAX1156EUP variant) eliminates the need for an external reference component, reducing BOM cost and PCB area while maintaining ±1 LSB INL and ±1 LSB missing-code performance.

Typical applications include industrial process control and PLC analog front ends, data acquisition systems and PC-based measurement cards, medical instrumentation (patient monitoring, blood analysis), and portable or battery-powered instrumentation requiring low quiescent current. The bipolar input range makes the MAX1156 particularly suited for measuring transducer outputs such as strain gauges, load cells, and pressure sensors that natively produce bipolar signals.

When designing with the MAX1156, allocate at least 10 nF of bypass capacitance on AVDD and DVDD placed within 5 mm of the package, and reserve PCB space for an optional input RC filter (typically 1 kΩ + 100 pF) to limit broadband noise from the sensor. The MAX1156 is pin-compatible with the MAX1158 (unipolar-only) and MAX1174 (12-bit), enabling a single PCB layout to support different precision/speed grades.

Typische Anwendungen

MAX1156BEUP+ ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Industrial Process Control and PLC Analog Front-End, Data Acquisition Systems and PC-Based Measurement Cards, Medical Instrumentation and Patient Monitoring, Portable Battery-Powered Instrumentation, Strain Gauge and Load Cell Measurement, Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning and Transmitter Front-End.

🏭

Industrial Process Control and PLC Analog Front-End

The MAX1156BEUP+ is widely used in PLC analog input modules and industrial process-control front-ends where ±10 V bipolar transducer outputs from pressure, flow, and level sensors must be digitized with high accuracy. The MAX1156BEUP+'s hardware-configurable ±10 V / 0-10 V / ±5 V bipolar input range eliminates the external op-amp level-shift stage typically required for 0-5 V single-supply ADCs, reducing BOM cost and PCB area. The 14-bit resolution provides 1.22 mV per LSB at the ±10 V range, sufficient for most industrial 4-20 mA current-loop-derived voltage measurements when paired with a precision 250 Ω sense resistor.

🖥️

Data Acquisition Systems and PC-Based Measurement Cards

The MAX1156BEUP+ serves as the analog front-end IC in PC-based data acquisition (DAQ) cards and USB measurement instruments where multiple channels of bipolar ±10 V sensor data must be digitized at moderate rates (up to 135 ksps aggregate). Its low 6 mA active supply current and 1 µA automatic power-down current between conversions make it suitable for multiplexed multi-channel architectures where only one ADC is shared across many input channels. The internal 4.096 V reference provides ratiometric stability that simplifies calibration routines for data acquisition software.

💊

Medical Instrumentation and Patient Monitoring

In medical instrumentation such as patient monitoring systems, blood gas analyzers, and clinical chemistry instruments, the MAX1156BEUP+ provides the 14-bit precision and ±10 V bipolar input range required for digitizing bio-sensor outputs that span both positive and negative voltages around a common-mode level. The 135 ksps throughput is sufficient for ECG and pulse-oximetry front-end signal chains. The TSSOP-20 industrial-grade package (-40 °C to +85 °C) meets the operating temperature range required by most medical electronic equipment standards, while the low 1 µA power-down current extends battery life in portable medical devices.

📱

Portable Battery-Powered Instrumentation

Battery-powered field instruments such as handheld multimeters, portable data loggers, and wireless sensor readout modules benefit from the MAX1156BEUP+'s 1 µA automatic power-down current, which minimizes battery consumption when the ADC is not actively converting. A typical duty-cycled measurement cycle (one conversion every 100 ms) reduces the average supply current to roughly 60 µA, enabling months of operation from a single 9 V battery or a few AA cells. The ±10 V bipolar input capability also allows direct connection to industrial ±10 V transducer outputs without an external signal-conditioning op-amp, further reducing the power and BOM cost of the portable instrument.

⚡

Strain Gauge and Load Cell Measurement

The MAX1156BEUP+ is well-suited for digitizing the bipolar ±5 V or ±10 V differential output of strain gauge bridges, load cells, and pressure sensors where the sensor output naturally swings above and below a common-mode voltage (typically +2.5 V or +5 V). Its high common-mode rejection and low-noise track-and-hold preserve the small differential strain signals superimposed on the common-mode voltage, while the 14-bit resolution provides approximately 16,384 codes for the full ±10 V input range - more than sufficient for resolving typical strain-gauge bridge signals in the millivolt range after external gain.

🌐

Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning and Transmitter Front-End

The MAX1156BEUP+ is widely adopted in 4-20 mA current-loop transmitters, industrial sensor conditioners, and HART-modem front-ends where the on-chip ±10 V bipolar input range replaces an external op-amp attenuation/level-shift stage. By eliminating external signal conditioning, designers reduce BOM cost, PCB area, and calibration steps. The MAX1156BEUP+'s ±1 LSB INL and ±1 LSB missing-codes guarantee ensures the digitized sensor reading remains within the 0.1 % accuracy class required by most industrial 4-20 mA transmitter standards, while the SPI/QSPI/MICROWIRE-compatible interface allows the part to be directly driven by an 8-bit microcontroller in cost-sensitive transmitter designs.

Choose the MAX1156BEUP+ when you need a 14-bit, 135 ksps SAR ADC that directly digitizes ±10 V or 0-10 V bipolar transducer outputs without an external op-amp signal-conditioning stage, particularly in industrial process control, PLC analog front-end, or portable instrumentation designs. Choose the MAX1158BEUP+ instead if you only need 12-bit resolution (4.88 mV per LSB at ±10 V) and want lower cost - it shares the same TSSOP-20 footprint, internal 4.096 V reference, and ±10 V bipolar input range, so it is a direct pin-compatible alternative for non-precision measurement channels. Choose the MAX1157BEUP+ if you want the same 14-bit performance but need an external reference for system-wide ratiometric measurement; the MAX1157 is pin-compatible with the MAX1156 but requires an external 4.096 V reference IC. Choose the TI ADS8520IDR if you need a second-source cross-brand option, accepting the SPI command-set difference that requires firmware rework. For unipolar-only (0-5 V or 0-10 V) applications, the MAX1174BEUP+ (14-bit unipolar, same TSSOP-20) is the better fit. All five alternatives use the same TSSOP-20 package, so PCB layout can be reused across the family.

Designhinweise

Place a 10 µF tantalum (or 10 µF ceramic) bypass capacitor on AVDD (pin 3) and a 100 nF ceramic bypass capacitor on DVDD (pin 4) within 5 mm of the package pins. The MAX1156BEUP+ requires a clean +5 V analog supply because AVDD noise above 1 mVrms directly couples into the analog input as converted-code noise. A ferrite bead between the analog and digital +5 V rails is recommended when AVDD and DVDD share the same supply, with the ferrite placed within 10 mm of the DVDD pin to isolate digital switching transients.

Route the analog input traces AIN+ and AIN- as a differential pair with constant 50 Ω characteristic impedance on the top layer, guarded on both sides by a ground pour tied to GND (pin 5). Place an optional input RC anti-aliasing filter (typically 1 kΩ + 100 pC) within 3 mm of the AIN+/AIN- pins. The filter bandwidth (-3 dB at 1.6 MHz) provides 10 x oversampling at 135 ksps while limiting broadband RF interference. The TSSOP-20 exposed-pad (if present) must be soldered to a continuous ground copper pour for thermal dissipation and EMI shielding.

When interfacing the MAX1156BEUP+ SPI bus to a host microcontroller running at higher than 1 MHz SCLK, place a 33 Ω series damping resistor at SCLK (pin 10) and DOUT (pin 12) within 5 mm of the MAX1156 pins to suppress ringing on the SPI bus. The MAX1156BEUP+ DOUT driver is rated for 50 pF load; keep the SPI trace length below 50 mm or use a 4-layer PCB with dedicated ground plane underneath the SPI traces to maintain signal integrity.

Do not leave the CONVST (pin 14) or CS (pin 9) inputs floating. Both are active-low inputs that must be driven high during normal operation; floating them risks spurious conversions or unintentional chip selection. Do not apply a signal larger than the selected range (e.g. ±15 V on the ±10 V range) because the internal input protection network will forward-bias and inject nonlinear currents into the input stage. For shutdown, drive the PD pin (pin 15) high; do not simply remove AVDD as the ESD protection diodes can back-power the analog input stage.

Separate analog and digital grounds on a 4-layer board, joining them at a single point under the MAX1156BEUP+ GND pin (pin 5) using a star-ground topology. Keep the REF pin (pin 6) trace short and surrounded by analog ground on both sides to prevent digital switching noise from coupling into the reference voltage. Place the REFADJ pin (pin 17) decoupling capacitor (typically 100 nF) within 3 mm of the pin; do not route any high-frequency digital signal traces within 5 mm of the REF pin trace.
