MAX14931BAWE+T Übersicht

The Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) MAX14931BAWE+T is a 4-channel, 2.75 kVrms general-purpose digital isolator housed in a 16-pin wide-body SOIC (WSOIC-16) package with 3/1 channel direction configuration. It supports data rates up to 25 Mbps and delivers typical common-mode transient immunity (CMTI) of 25 kV/µs, transferring digital signals across an isolation barrier using the proprietary process technology that integrates a single-ended CMOS or LVCMOS interface on each side.

A digital isolator is a semiconductor device that uses galvanic isolation (typically via on-chip transformers, capacitive barriers, or optocouplers) to allow high-speed digital communication between two domains that sit at very different ground potentials or that must remain safety-isolated. Digital isolators -> isolators -> interface ICs -> signal conditioning ICs -> semiconductors is the taxonomy hierarchy. Compared with legacy optocouplers, CMOS-based digital isolators offer faster data rates, tighter channel-to-channel matching, lower power consumption, and CMTI performance two to three orders of magnitude higher.

Key features of the MAX14931BAWE+T include a 2.75 kVrms withstand voltage per UL 1577, default output state options (high or low) across the MAX14930/MAX14931/MAX14932 family, 1.71 V to 5.5 V wide supply range on both sides, and an operating temperature range of -40 °C to +125 °C. The integrated refresh circuit maintains stable output levels when input signals remain static for long durations, eliminating the input-signal minimum-rate constraints common to many AC-coupled isolators.

The MAX14931BAWE+T uses Maxim's proprietary process technology that embeds an isolation barrier directly inside the die-package stack-up. This monolithically integrated approach reduces channel-to-channel skew to under 4 ns and provides a low pulse-width distortion around 5 ns, preserving signal integrity at the 25 Mbps maximum data rate even in motor-drive and industrial-servo environments where dv/dt transients easily exceed 10 kV/µs.

Typical applications include isolated RS-485/RS-422 interfaces, isolated SPI or I2C data links between MCU and high-voltage drivers, industrial fieldbus isolation (Profibus, Modbus, CAN), isolated gate-driver signal paths for IGBT and SiC power stages, and medical equipment patient-isolated signal acquisition. The wide 1.71 V to 5.5 V supply range lets the same part serve 1.8 V, 2.5 V, 3.3 V, and 5 V logic rails without level-shifters.

When designing with this device, place 0.1 µF decoupling capacitors as close as possible to each VDD pin on both primary and secondary sides; for optimal CMTI performance, route the isolator away from fast-switching traces, and add a stitching capacitance between the two ground domains to shunt common-mode currents. The default output state (A/B/C/D suffix) must be chosen to match the system fail-safe polarity required by downstream logic.

🌐

Isolated RS-485/RS-422 Interface

The MAX14931BAWE+T's 25 Mbps data rate and 25 kV/µs CMTI make it an excellent fit for isolating RS-485/RS-422 transceiver data lines in industrial fieldbus networks. Each of the four channels can carry one direction of a full-duplex differential pair plus flow-control lines, allowing the part to isolate both TX and RX lines plus enable signals between the controller MCU and a grounded transceiver at the cable side. The 2.75 kVrms withstand rating per UL 1577 satisfies reinforced isolation for 24V/48V industrial-bus links, and the monolithic barrier eliminates the ground-loop-induced data corruption common when the bus and the MCU sit at different ground potentials. Place the isolator between the controller UART pins and the transceiver logic pins, and pair it with a TVS diode such as the PESD1CAN for surge protection on the bus side.

🏭

Isolated SPI/I2C Bridge for Motor Drives

The MAX14931BAWE+T's four channels (3 forward + 1 reverse) align naturally with SPI bus isolation, where three lines (MOSI, SCLK, CS) go from controller to driver and one line (MISO) returns. With 25 Mbps capability it covers SPI clocks well above 10 MHz and supports fast-mode I2C up to ~3.4 Mbps when used with bit-banging or bus-extender ICs. In motor-drive applications, the 25 kV/µs CMTI ensures data integrity even when adjacent IGBT or SiC FETs switch at 20 kV/µs during hard commutation, while the wide 1.71-5.5 V supply range allows the controller to run at 3.3 V and the gate-driver side to run at 5 V without additional level shifters. Pair with a gate driver such as the MAX22701E for reinforced-isolation motor-control half-bridges.

⚡

Isolated Gate Driver Signal Path for IGBT/SiC

The MAX14931BAWE+T is well suited for carrying gate-drive control signals across the high-voltage barrier in IGBT, SiC, and GaN half-bridge designs. Its 25 kV/µs typical CMTI exceeds the 10 kV/µs minimum typically required for SiC MOSFETs and matches the 25 kV/µs environment of modern automotive traction inverters. Using two channels per switch (PWM and fault-return), the part's 3/1 direction supports asymmetric signal flow between low-voltage controller and high-side driver. The 2.75 kVrms withstand rating per UL 1577 supports reinforced isolation up to 600 V working voltage in industrial drives. Place the isolator as close as possible to the gate driver to minimize high-dV/dt trace lengths, and add a 0.1 µF X7R bypass capacitor on each VDD pin for stable logic supply.

🏭

Isolated Industrial Fieldbus (CAN/Profibus/Modbus)

The MAX14931BAWE+T provides reliable isolation for CAN, Profibus, and Modbus industrial fieldbus transceivers where ground potential differences between PLC nodes frequently exceed 50 V and common-mode transients routinely exceed 5 kV/µs. With 4 channels it can isolate the dominant CAN_H/CAN_L data lines plus power-and-ground references between CAN transceiver and MCU, or carry TX/RX plus enable signals for Profibus RS-485 segments. The wide 1.71-5.5 V supply range allows direct interfacing with 1.8 V MCUs, 3.3 V FPGAs, or 5 V PLC logic without additional level shifters. The 25 Mbps speed headroom is more than sufficient for the 1 Mbps CAN-FD maximum data rate. The device's monolithic barrier integration means fewer external components and better long-term reliability than optocoupler-based designs.

💊

Medical Equipment Patient-Isolated Signal Acquisition

The MAX14931BAWE+T's 2.75 kVrms isolation and monolithic process technology meet the basic isolation requirements of IEC 60601-1 for patient-connected medical devices such as patient monitors, infusion pumps, and ECG/EES equipment. With 25 Mbps the part supports digitized bio-signal channels that are preprocessed by an analog front-end on the patient side and routed back to an isolated MCU/FPGA. The low pulse-width distortion (typically 5 ns per datasheet) preserves timing accuracy for diagnostic algorithms that depend on faithful pulse reconstruction. The device's -40 °C to +125 °C operating temperature range also suits rugged portable medical devices used in EMS environments. The wide supply range lets the patient side run at 1.8 V from a coin-cell while the host side runs at 3.3 V or 5 V.

🔋

Solar Inverter and Battery-Management Communication

The MAX14931BAWE+T is well suited to isolate communication lines in solar inverters and battery management systems (BMS), where the high-voltage DC bus (up to 1500 V for solar strings, 800 V for EV battery packs) must remain galvanically isolated from the low-voltage control board. With 25 Mbps and 25 kV/µs CMTI it can isolate SPI buses to gate drivers plus fault-return signals, ensuring reliable operation even with the high dV/dt of a 100 kHz LLC or full-bridge converter. The 2.75 kVrms withstand rating per UL 1577 supports the typical 1000 V working-voltage isolation needed for 600 V and 800 V system buses when combined with safety-margin practices. Pair it with isolated DC-DC converters such as the MAX17691 for complete reinforced isolation.

Designhinweise

Place 0.1 µF X7R or X5R decoupling capacitors as close as possible to each VDD pin (pins 1 and 16) on both primary and secondary sides. Add a 1 µF bulk capacitor on each side if the upstream regulator is more than 25 mm away. Keep the trace lengths between the bypass capacitors and the IC pins under 5 mm to minimize high-frequency supply-current loop inductance, which directly affects CMTI performance under fast transients. Per the Analog Devices datasheet, the isolation barrier's integrity depends on maintaining at least 8 mm of clear creepage on the PCB outer layers.

Route the high-voltage side traces away from low-voltage logic and place the isolator so its barrier is aligned with the PCB's high-voltage-to-low-voltage spacing. Avoid placing the IC directly above or below any switching power-train traces; if the design uses a half-bridge nearby, allow at least 4 mm of creepage from the switching node to the high-side IC pin. To shunt common-mode currents, place a stitching capacitance (typically 4.7 nF Y-cap or 10 nF ceramic X7R) between primary GND and secondary GND on a PCB trace that does not cross the isolation barrier.

Although the MAX14931BAWE+T supports up to 25 Mbps, signal integrity is best preserved by source-terminating each line with a 50 Ω or 100 Ω series resistor (depending on protocol impedance). This reduces reflections caused by the IC's input capacitance and the cable's stub length on the secondary side. For SPI buses above 10 MHz, length-match the four data lines within ±2 mm to avoid skew-induced timing errors. Note that the IC's channel-to-channel skew is specified under datasheet test conditions; system-level margin should account for PCB-induced mismatch.

Do not route any primary-side trace under the WSOIC-16 body or under the secondary-side pins - the isolation barrier inside the package is the only thing separating the two ground domains, and any conductor that crosses it defeats the isolation. Do not assume the B-grade default-high output will be valid at power-up; per the datasheet the output is determined by an internal pull-up to VDD2, so ensure VDD2 is stable before the downstream logic samples it. Do not parallel multiple MAX14931BAWE+T channels to increase current capability - they are digital logic drivers and not designed for parallel operation.
