MC56F82723VLC Übersicht

The NXP MC56F82723VLC is a 32-bit digital signal controller (DSC) built on the 56800EX core, delivering 100 MIPS at 100 MHz, 32 KB of program flash, and 6 KB of unified data/EEPROM-emulation RAM in a 32-pin LQFP (7x7 mm) package. The device integrates a high-resolution PWM module, a 12-bit ADC with dual sample-and-hold stages, multiple timers, and a 6-bit DAC reference per analog comparator, packaged as a system-on-chip solution for digital motor and power-conversion control.

A Digital Signal Controller (DSC) is a hybrid between a microcontroller (MCU) and a digital signal processor (DSP). It combines the deterministic interrupt response and peripheral integration of an MCU (firmware control loops, mixed-signal I/O, on-chip flash) with the MAC unit, single-cycle MAC, and Harvard bus architecture of a DSP. Positioned above general-purpose MCUs and below high-end DSPs, the DSC sits in the taxonomy: microcontroller -> 32-bit MCU -> DSC -> 56F8xxx family -> NXP 56800EX core. This makes the MC56F82723VLC especially well-suited to closed-loop control loops where software speed and signal-chain precision must coexist on one silicon die.

Key features include 100 MIPS core throughput, 32 KB flash, 6 KB RAM, a 12-bit ADC with up to 16 single-ended channels (or 8 differential pairs), three 6-bit DAC references, four programmable analog comparators, a high-resolution eFlexPWM module with up to 8 PWM channels (250 ps resolution), a queued I2C module, two SCI/UART modules, one SPI module, and a COP/watchdog timer. The 56800EX core executes most instructions in a single cycle, and the on-chip regulator simplifies power-tree design.

The architecture combines a 32-bit 56800EX processor core with a peripheral transaction server (PTA) that offloads GPIO toggling from the CPU, freeing bandwidth for control loops. The PWM module supports center-aligned, edge-aligned, and complementary outputs with dead-time insertion, while the 12-bit ADC supports both sequential and simultaneous dual-sample conversions ideal for three-shunt current sensing in FOC motor drives.

Typical applications include BLDC and PMSM motor drives (FOC), solar micro-inverters, digital LED lighting ballasts, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and home appliances such as washing machines and induction cooktops. Industrial and consumer motor-control appliances benefit most from the integrated PWM, ADC, and comparators.

When designing with this controller, ensure the analog and digital supply pins (VDDA, VDD, VSS, VSSA) are decoupled at the package with 100 nF + 4.7 uF ceramic capacitors and that the exposed thermal pad (if present on the package variant) is soldered to a copper island. Reserve one of the PWM fault pins for hardware shutdown to protect the power stage.

This page synthesizes distributor stock, parametric cross-references, and application notes that go beyond the manufacturer datasheet summary, helping engineers decide quickly whether the MC56F82723VLC fits their motor-control or power-conversion design.

🏭

BLDC / PMSM Motor Control (FOC)

The MC56F82723VLC is purpose-built for field-oriented control of brushless DC and permanent-magnet synchronous motors. Its 100 MIPS 56800EX core runs Park/Clarke transforms and PI loops with margin, and the 8-channel eFlexPWM with 250 ps edge placement drives three-phase inverters at >20 kHz with minimal dead-time distortion. The 12-bit ADC supports dual simultaneous sampling on the 32-pin variant for three-shunt current sensing; the four analog comparators with 6-bit DAC references provide hardware over-current protection that bypasses software latency. Compared to a generic MCU, the integrated PWM, ADC, and comparators eliminate an external motor-control ASIC and reduce BOM cost in appliance-class drives up to several hundred watts.

⚡

Solar Micro-Inverter / Power Conversion

In solar micro-inverters and small string inverters, the MC56F82723VLC delivers the MPPT control loop and grid-synchronization functions in a single chip. The 56800EX core computes the MPPT algorithm and the PLL for current shaping at the switching frequency, while the eFlexPWM drives the full-bridge MOSFET stage with complementary outputs and programmable dead-time. The 12-bit ADC samples PV input voltage, DC bus voltage, and output current at the same instant, and the on-chip 6-bit DAC references provide accurate comparator thresholds for anti-islanding protection. Operating from 3.3 V with the internal regulator simplifying power-tree design, the device replaces two chips (an MCU + DSP) that legacy architectures require.

💡

Digital LED Lighting Ballasts

The MC56F82723VLC drives digital LED ballasts with constant-current control and high-frequency dimming. Its 8 PWM channels with 250 ps resolution provide >16-bit effective dimming depth at 1 kHz refresh rate, and the analog comparators detect zero-crossing for PFC boost stages. The 56800EX core executes color-mixing algorithms for RGB tunable-white luminaires at low overhead, while the I2C and SCI peripherals connect to DALI, 0-10 V, or wireless dimming modules. Compared to a discrete LED driver IC, the MC56F82723VLC enables firmware-defined thermal foldback, daylight harvesting, and tunable spectra in one part.

🖥️

Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) / Inverter Control

The MC56F82723VLC is well-suited to small UPS and inverter control loops where sinusoidal PWM (SPWM) and DC-bus voltage regulation must run in real time. The 56800EX 100 MIPS core sustains 16 kHz SPWM with second-order harmonic compensation, and the 12-bit ADC samples DC-bus voltage, battery current, and output current simultaneously. The eFlexPWM module drives the full H-bridge IGBT gate drivers with hardware dead-time insertion and fault input for hardware shutdown on over-current. The queued SCI provides isolation-transformer-coupled RS-485 for remote monitoring, and the COP watchdog ensures recovery from brown-out events.

🏭

Home Appliance Motor Control

Washing machines, dishwashers, range hoods, and induction cooktops use the MC56F82723VLC for variable-speed motor and induction heating control. Its 100 MHz core handles sensorless FOC for BLDC drum motors and quasi-resonant control for induction cooktop coils, with the 8 PWM channels driving either motor phases or half-bridge induction stages. The 12-bit ADC reads NTC temperature sensors and motor currents simultaneously, while the analog comparators with DAC references provide hardware over-temperature and over-current trip protection. Compared to discrete MCU + gate-driver designs, the integration reduces PCB area by 30-40% in cost-sensitive appliance designs.

🤖

Industrial Servo / Stepper Control

The MC56F82723VLC drives industrial stepper and small servo drives in factory automation, CNC auxiliary axes, and robotics. Its 56800EX core runs step-rate profiles and trapezoidal velocity planning with low jitter, and the eFlexPWM outputs microstep waveforms to external stepper driver ICs or directly drives the H-bridge FETs for small servos. The 12-bit ADC reads encoder feedback, current sense, and supply voltage, while the queued I2C connects to EEPROM parameter storage and the SCI to RS-485 networked control. The 32-LQFP footprint suits compact embedded servo modules with limited board area.

Designhinweise

Decouple VDD/VSS and VDDA/VSSA at the package pins with a 100 nF ceramic + 4.7 uF bulk pair each. The internal voltage regulator provides 1.2 V to the core; do not back-power the regulator from an external rail. For motor-control PCBs with high dI/dt, separate the analog and digital ground planes and stitch them at one point under the DSC to avoid high-current return paths polluting the ADC readings.

Route the PWM output traces away from the ADC analog input traces and add a ground guard ring around the analog input pins. Place the ADC reference bypass cap within 5 mm of the VDDA pin. For three-phase motor drives, keep the three current-sense traces matched in length and width; the 12-bit ADC's dual-sample capability only delivers differential accuracy if both sense signals arrive within one ADC clock of each other.

At 100 MHz core speed with all peripherals active, the MC56F82723VLC dissipates approximately 150-200 mW in the 32-LQFP package. Estimated: using typical NXP power-model values (~1.5 mW/MHz core plus ~0.5 mW per active peripheral block), junction temperature rise above ambient is approximately 30 C/W * 0.2 W = 6 C, well within the -40 C to +105 C operating range without external heatsinking.

Do not drive the JTAG TDI/TMS/TCK pins with 5 V signals; the device is 3.3 V only. Always release the JTAG reset path before exiting reset, or the device may fail to start. When using the queued I2C module, populate a 4.7 kohm pullup on both SDA and SCL to VDD; the on-chip pad pullups are too weak for >400 kHz operation. The 6-bit DAC reference outputs are not high-current - they can only drive the comparator input, not an external rail.

For motor-control applications switching at >20 kHz PWM, place a ferrite bead on the VDDA supply to decouple digital switching noise from the analog reference. The eFlexPWM outputs can source/sink up to 12 mA each - if driving a gate driver with higher input current, buffer the PWM output with a logic gate or gate-driver input resistor network to limit inrush current and ground bounce.
