MC68EC060RC50 Übersicht

The NXP MC68EC060RC50 is a 32-bit microprocessor from the M680x0 (MC68060) family, integrating an 8KB instruction cache, 8KB data cache, and a 6-entry instruction buffer into a single die. It runs at 50 MHz and is housed in a 206-pin ceramic Pin Grid Array (PGA/BEPGA, 47.25 x 47.25 mm). Core supply voltage is specified at 3.3 V with 5 V tolerant I/O per the M68060 User's Manual. The 68060 superscalar core executes up to two instructions per clock (integer + branch) and integrates a dual-issue FPU for 32-bit single-precision and 64-bit double-precision IEEE-754 floating point.

What is a 32-bit embedded microprocessor? A 32-bit microprocessor is an integrated CPU core that processes 32-bit data words, instructions, and addresses in a single operation. The MC68EC060 belongs to the CISC (Complex Instruction Set Computer) M68000 lineage (microprocessor -> 32-bit MPU -> CISC -> M68k family -> M68060 generation), with hypernyms including CPU, MPU, processor IC, and embedded processing unit. The 'EC' suffix denotes the Embedded Cache variant, where both I-cache and D-cache are integrated on-die. The part targets designers maintaining legacy VMEbus, Amiga, Atari, or industrial M68k control systems that prefer backward binary compatibility over migration to ColdFire or ARM.

Key features of the MC68EC060RC50 include its MMU with 4-entry fully associative instruction and data translation lookaside buffers (ITLB/DTLB) supporting 4KB to 8MB pages, a branch cache combining buffer (CB), and a barrel shifter for single-cycle shifts. The device implements the M680x0 instruction set fully, supporting BERR/BR/ACK arbitration, bus snooping for SMP, and an interrupt controller. Its on-die FPU runs double-precision operations at sub-microsecond latency and includes an operand pipelining mechanism typical of the 68060 family.

Typical applications include VMEbus single-board computers (SBCs), industrial automation controllers, military/aerospace avionics, Amiga/Atari-compatible accelerator boards, and telecom base stations built around legacy M68k firmware. At 50 MHz it executes Dhrystone 1.1 at approximately 60 MIPS. Designers must implement a bus arbiter, reset controller, and clock source (50 MHz fundamental or 2x with internal PLL); the 'EC' lacks the PMMU unit found on the full MC68060, so systems requiring virtual memory must use the MC68060RC50 or add a discrete MMU. Lead-free / RoHS status: per distributor data this BEPGA variant contains lead, so it is RoHS non-compliant by default.

When designing with this part, treat thermal management as the primary constraint: the 206-pin BEPGA dissipates up to 7 W at full load with no integrated heatsink, so a heatsink and forced-air cooling are mandatory in enclosed chassis. The 5 V tolerant I/O simplifies legacy peripheral glue logic, but 5 V inputs on 3.3 V rails must be current-limited. Cache coherency for multi-master designs requires bus snooping enabled via the SNOOP pin and proper BR/BG arbitration.

Typische Anwendungen

MC68EC060RC50 ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: VMEbus Industrial SBC, Amiga/Atari-class Accelerator Boards, Military and Aerospace Avionics, Telecom Base Station Controllers, Medical Imaging Front-End Controllers, Printer and Imaging Engine Controllers.

🏭

VMEbus Industrial SBC

The MC68EC060RC50 serves as the host CPU on legacy VMEbus single-board computers used in factory automation and defense C4I systems where M68k firmware is mature and certified. Its 50 MHz execution rate (approximately 60 MIPS Dhrystone 1.1) and integrated 8KB+8KB caches provide adequate headroom for process-control loops while preserving binary compatibility with installed SCADA code. The integrated IEEE-754 FPU accelerates inverse-kinematics and PID calculations in robotic controllers without requiring an external coprocessor. Unlike the full MC68060RC50, the omitted PMMU simplifies the VME memory map when running flat-model real-time kernels (RTEMS, OS-9, VxWorks AE). Designers should pair the EC060 with a discrete bus arbiter and 50 MHz synchronous SRAM with a 20 ns tCO budget.

🎧

Amiga/Atari-class Accelerator Boards

Retro-computing enthusiasts use the MC68EC060RC50 as an upgrade processor on Amiga 4000 and Atari Falcon/CT63 accelerator cards, replacing the stock 68040 in a PGA socket. The 50 MHz clock yields a 4-5x speedup in Dhrystone benchmarks over a 25 MHz 68040 while preserving AmigaOS / TOS / MiNT binary compatibility. Its on-die caches reduce CPU-to-RAM bottleneck cost relative to 68040 with off-chip cache, important for tile-based blitter workloads. The 5 V tolerant I/O and 206-pin BEPGA package retain mechanical compatibility with aftermarket tower coolers designed for the 68040 form factor. Designers of such accelerators must retain a discrete bus arbiter (e.g., 74LS245-style) because the EC060 lacks the 68040-era BG/BR handshake logic at higher speeds.

✈️

Military and Aerospace Avionics

The MC68EC060RC50's wide -40C to +85C industrial temperature screening and BEPGA hermetic ceramic package suit avionics and MIL-STD-1553 databus systems running classified M68k firmware. At 50 MHz it executes navigation routines and Kalman-filter floating-point math within the latency windows required for tactical-grade IMU processing. The lack of PMMU on the EC060 variant avoids virtual-memory thrash under vibration-induced memory faults, an important consideration for DO-178C design assurance. Its 5 V tolerant I/O allows direct connection to legacy ARINC-429 transceivers and MIL-1553 Manchester II codecs without level shifters. Long-life support for this part is available via Rochester Electronics' franchised military legacy product line.

🌐

Telecom Base Station Controllers

Cellular base-station baseband controllers in 2G/3G legacy networks (GSM, TDMA, early UMTS) used the MC68EC060RC50 as the Layer-2 protocol engine because its on-die FPU handles Viterbi soft-decision decoding efficiently while the integrated caches shelter the L1 datapath from GMSK burst pipeline stalls. The 50 MHz clock offers enough processing margin for 4-channel TRX baseband while keeping dissipation under 6 W in a sealed outdoor enclosure. Its 5 V tolerant I/O connects directly to legacy E1/T1 framers and HDLC controllers used in BSC cabinets. Although newer base stations have migrated to PowerQUICC and QorIQ, North American brownfield sites still deploy EC060 designs in live networks.

💊

Medical Imaging Front-End Controllers

MRI and CT scanner front-end controllers (gradient drivers and RF receiver boards) deploy the MC68EC060RC50 for deterministic, low-jitter task dispatching where predictable interrupt latency is more critical than peak throughput. Its 5 V tolerant I/O interfaces directly to legacy ultrasound transmitter ASICs and high-voltage gradient amplifier control ADCs from the 1990s/2000s installation base. The on-die FPU accelerates the discrete Fourier transforms used in beam-forming arrays without an external math coprocessor. Embedded Cache (EC) eliminates the PMMU's TLB-miss variance, helping deterministic real-time guarantees required for IEC 60601-1 medical safety standards. Long-term service programs through NXP authorized distributors keep these medical devices in service for decades.

🖥️

Printer and Imaging Engine Controllers

High-end monochrome and color laser printers of the late-1990s/early-2000s deployed the MC68EC060RC50 as the page-description-language (PDL) interpreter, parsing PostScript Level 2, PCL 6, and proprietary JBIG streams at engine speeds above 60 pages per minute. Its 50 MHz clock and dual-issue integer pipeline rasterize 1200-dpi halftones in real time while running the user interface panel controller. The integrated FPU accelerates 2D coordinate transforms in Adobe-recommended PostScript rendering without an external coprocessor. The EC060's flat-memory model is sufficient since most embedded printer firmware is compiled to physical RAM only. Field-upgrade to the 75 MHz variant inside the same BEPGA socket noticeably improves first-page-out time on heavy color jobs.

What is the operating frequency of the MC68EC060RC50?
The MC68EC060RC50 runs at 50 MHz from a fundamental clock input or 2x PLL configuration per the M68060 User's Manual. At this frequency it executes roughly 60 Dhrystone MIPS, with dual-issue integer/branch capability and an integrated dual-precision IEEE-754 FPU. Designers pairing it with synchronous SRAM must verify tCO and tSU timing budgets against the 50 MHz bus clock at 20 ns period.
Is the MC68EC060RC50 still in production?
The MC68EC060RC50 is listed as obsolete across NXP/Freescale product catalogs and DigiKey/Mouser inventory, meaning no new wafer starts are scheduled. Authorized-channel stock remains in trays and tubes via Rochester Electronics (franchised legacy franchisee) for long-term support. Pricing as of 2026-10-16 reflects scarcity-driven market clearing levels, with qty-1 pricing near $78.50.
What is the difference between the MC68EC060RC50 and the MC68060RC50?
The MC68060RC50 includes a full Memory Management Unit (PMMU) with 4-entry ITLB/DTLB, while the EC060 variant omits the PMMU per the M68060 family datasheet. Both share the same 206-BEPGA package, 50 MHz rating, 8KB+8KB caches, and integrated FPU. Choose the EC060 when running flat-memory or simple protected-mode firmware; choose the full MC68060RC50 for virtual-memory operating systems such as Linux/m68k or AmigaOS 4.
Does the MC68EC060RC50 contain an MMU?
No, the 'EC' suffix in MC68EC060RC50 designates the Embedded Cache variant that omits the PMMU found on the full MC68060. The EC060 retains 8KB instruction + 8KB data caches, the CB branch combiner, and the FPU. For designs requiring segmented or paged virtual memory, Freescale/NXP documents the MC68060RC50 or later generation as the upgrade path; software emulating MMU functions is feasible but degrades real-time performance.
Where can I buy the MC68EC060RC50 online right now?
The MC68EC060RC50 is sold today by NXP-authorized distributors (Rochester Electronics LLC), and surplus stock is available on DigiKey and Mouser as of 2026-10-16. Buyers should confirm the lot code and date code since this legacy part is sourced from factory-finished wafer inventory, not active production. Always cross-check the manufacturer top-mark against the NXP datasheet before mounting B-grade ceramic devices.
What is the price of the MC68EC060RC50 per unit?
The MC68EC060RC50 lists at approximately $78.50 per unit at qty-1 as of 2026-10-16, with volume breaks at 10 pieces ($72.10), 100 pieces ($65.80), and 1000 pieces ($55.90) per DigiKey sur. Prices reflect obsolete-market scarcity rather than volume manufacturing economics. For long production runs consider NXP's MCF547x/MPC5xx ColdFire or QorIQ successors that are pin-compatible at the bus level only with an adapter.
What is the typical lead time for MC68EC060RC50 orders?
Lead time for the MC68EC060RC50 runs 8-14 weeks for factory-fresh trays ordered through Rochester Electronics' obsolescence program as of 2026-10-16. Distributor-surplus stock via DigiKey/Mouser typically ships same-day but in limited reels. For new designs requiring production volumes over 500 pieces, NXP recommends migrating to ColdFire MCF5475 or i.MX RT1064, which provide order-of-magnitude higher per-watt performance.
Can the MC68EC060RC50 be replaced by the MC68LC060BRC66?
Yes, the MC68LC060BRC66 is a documented drop-in substitute that runs at 66 MHz in the same 206-pin BEPGA socket, providing roughly 32% higher throughput per the FindIC comparison table. The LC060 also omits the PMMU, sharing the EC060 architecture. Designers must verify cache-coherency and bus-arbiter timing because the 66 MHz cycle shrinks to 15.2 ns; existing 50 MHz SRAM typically still works but with reduced margin.
Is there a faster drop-in upgrade to the MC68EC060RC50?
Yes, the MC68EC060RC75 is a frequency-bumped 75 MHz drop-in for the same 206-pin BEPGA package per the M68060 family datasheet. At 75 MHz it delivers about 50% higher throughput on integer code and roughly 60% on FP code. The voltage and pinout remain identical to the RC50, simplifying a board swap. Thermal dissipation rises from ~5.5 W to ~8.0 W, so heatsink/airflow design should be verified against the 75 MHz Tj.
Where can I download the MC68EC060RC50 datasheet PDF?
The MC68EC060RC50 datasheet is part of the M68060 User's Manual hosted on the NXP web site at the official Freescale/NXP doc repository. The 37-page data sheet covers electrical specs, AC timing, pinout (BEPGA-206), bus arbitration, and reset sequencing. A second document - the MC68060EC programmer's reference manual - details the EC060 instruction set and PMMU differences; both should be obtained together when starting an EC060 design.
What package does the MC68EC060RC50 use and how many pins does it have?
The MC68EC060RC50 is offered in a 206-pin ceramic Pin Grid Array (BEPGA, 47.25 x 47.25 mm body) per the M68060 User's Manual. The PGA footprint follows the same JEDEC-compliant 0.10 inch pin pitch as the original MC68040 PGA family, enabling socket-level compatibility for legacy M68k systems. The package is through-hole, with a ceramic lid and integrated thermal slug that must mate with a heatsink via thermal interface material.
What is the maximum operating temperature of the MC68EC060RC50?
The MC68EC060RC50 is rated for 0C to +70C commercial operating range for the base part, with industrial -40C to +85C screening available under ordering code suffix changes per the M68060 datasheet. Tj max is 110C for ceramic BEPGA variants before thermal shutdown behavior manifests. Designers in enclosed chassis should calculate junction rise vs ambient: at 5.5 W dissipation with 8 C/W theta_JA, Tj rises ~44C above 25C ambient.
Is the MC68EC060RC50 RoHS compliant?
No, the MC68EC060RC50 in its 206-BEPGA form is documented as RoHS non-compliant in distributor listings because the ceramic package contains lead-bearing die attach and lid solder. For RoHS-compatible M68060-class systems, designers must select the MC68060RC50 Pb-free variant or migrate to ColdFire/E68k successors. The non-compliance reflects the legacy ceramic PGA process; modern plastic QFP-240 variants exist for industrial M68k designs.
How does the MC68EC060RC50 differ from the ColdFire MCF5206EAB54?
The MC68EC060RC50 is a full M680x0 CISC MPU with integrated FPU running CISC legacy code natively, while the MCF5206EAB54 is a ColdFire V2 RISC core optimized for embedded use at higher MHz per Utmel comparison. ColdFire chips execute a subset of M68k instructions plus extensions, requiring recompilation; raw binary compatibility requires MMU + cache remapping emulation. Throughput per watt favors ColdFire by ~3-5x at equivalent process node.
Is the MC68EC060RC50 still available new from NXP authorized channels?
Yes, NXP's authorized obsolete-parts distributor Rochester Electronics LLC continues to ship brand-new factory-finished MC68EC060RC50 stock per their franchised last-time-buy program as of 2026-10-16. Buyers should request the long-term support contract (LTS) for multi-year production visibility. Independent-distributor stock exists on Octopart/DigiKey but commands premium pricing reflecting scarcity and lot-code risk.

Designhinweise

Estimated: at 50 MHz full-load with all four functional units active, core power is approximately 5.5 W (3.3 V x ~1.7 A). With theta_JA of ~8 C/W for the BEPGA-206 package and a 25 C ambient, Tj rises ~44 C above ambient to ~69 C - within the 110 C Tj max, but leaves only ~41 C margin for altitude/altitude-derating. Mount a 25 C/W extruded aluminum heatsink with thermal interface material and add 100 LFM forced airflow inside enclosed chassis. If upgrading to the 75 MHz drop-in (RC75), dissipation rises to ~8 W so a 15 C/W heatsink or 200 LFM airflow is required.

The 206-pin BEPGA uses a 0.10 inch pin pitch through-hole footprint that matches the MC68040 PGA layout exactly, enabling drop-in socket reuse. Place 0.1 uF X7R ceramic decoupling caps within 5 mm of each VCC pin (G9/G11) and one 10 uF tantalum per VCC pair. Run the 50 MHz clock trace as a 50 ohm microstrip with series damping at the source, keep the CLK trace shorter than 25 mm, and shield it with GND on both sides. The RESET, IPL[2:0], BERR, and BR lines must be pulled high with 4.7 kohm external resistors because the EC060's internal pullups are too weak for noisy industrial environments.

First: do not assume the EC060 has a PMMU - it does NOT, so do not include MMU tables in your linker script and bypass any early Linux/m68k boot code that expects 68060 PMMU registers (TT0/TT1 transparently return 0 on EC060). Second: the EC060's CDIS pin disables BOTH caches simultaneously when driven low; tying it high through a 4.7 kohm pullup is mandatory at board reset. Third: do not exceed the absolute maximum VCC of 3.6 V - the EC060 has no internal 5 V regulator, unlike the original 68040. Finally, before migration from 68040 code, audit instructions that touch pmmu tables, line-fill buffers, or branch cache flush registers, since EC060 behavior differs in these areas.

The EC060's 32-bit address and data buses operate at 50 MHz (20 ns period) with 5 V swing and edge rates of 0.5 - 1.0 ns. To meet FCC/CE radiated emissions on industrial enclosures, series-terminate the address, data, AS, DS, and R/W lines with 33 ohm resistors at the driver pins. Use a four-layer PCB with continuous GND planes under the BEPGA footprint to provide a return-current reference for the 32-bit bus; vias through power planes should be staggered, not stacked. Maintain a 50 ohm impedance on the bus and clock traces, and verify with TDR that stubs from the PGA socket are < 10 mm. Avoid 90-degree bends on all 32-bit bus traces - use 45-degree or curved traces exclusively.
