PIC12F519-I/SN Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC12F519-I/SN is an 8-bit, 8-pin baseline Flash microcontroller IC with 1.5KB (1K x 12) of program Flash memory, 64 bytes of non-volatile Flash data memory, and a precision 4/8 MHz internal oscillator, housed in an 8-SOIC package. It operates across a 2.0V to 5.5V supply voltage range, making it suitable for both 3.3V and 5V systems.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a small computer-on-a-chip that integrates a CPU, RAM, non-volatile program memory, and peripherals into a single IC. The PIC12F519 belongs to Microchip's baseline core architecture (33 instructions, 2 stack levels, 12-bit wide instructions, 8-bit wide data path) - the simplest tier in the PIC family hierarchy: 8-bit MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor. Baseline PICs target cost-sensitive applications where cycle efficiency and minimum instruction count outweigh raw throughput.

Key features include 6 I/O pins capable of 25 mA source/sink, an integrated watchdog timer (WDT), one 8-bit timer (TMR0), an 8 MHz precision internal oscillator (4 MHz default), and a low-power 100 nA sleep current. The device offers In-Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) for field updates and code protection to safeguard intellectual property. 1.5KB of Flash supports modest firmware payloads typical of sensor interfaces, simple state machines, and glue-logic replacement.

The PIC12F519's architecture is built around a Harvard-style design with separate program and data buses, enabling single-cycle instruction execution except for branches (2 cycles). This deterministic execution, combined with the baseline core's compact instruction set, simplifies code generation in assembly and C (XC8 compiler). The non-volatile Flash data memory (64 bytes) provides persistent storage for calibration constants or serial numbers without external EEPROM.

Typical applications include battery-powered sensor nodes, household appliance control, LED driver replacement circuits, simple PWM fan controllers, and automotive interior accessories (sub-systems). The wide 2.0-5.5V range supports direct battery or USB-derived power rails without additional regulation.

When designing with this part, ensure decoupling capacitors (100 nF typical) are placed close to VDD and that the ICSP programming pins are accessible. The internal 8 MHz oscillator eliminates external crystal cost but offers less frequency precision than an external crystal; for UART timing-sensitive applications, verify baud-rate error margins.

Typische Anwendungen

PIC12F519-I/SN ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Battery-Powered Sensor Node, Household Appliance Control, LED Driver Replacement Circuit, Simple PWM Fan Controller, Automotive Interior Accessories, Glue-Logic Replacement / Discrete-to-IC Migration.

📱

Battery-Powered Sensor Node

The PIC12F519-I/SN is an excellent fit for battery-powered sensor nodes because its 100 nA typical sleep current and 2.0-5.5 V wide supply range allow direct operation from two alkaline or NiMH cells (2.0-3.6 V) without boost regulation. The baseline core's 33-instruction set and 1.5 KB Flash support typical sensor-fusion or periodic-sampling firmware. With 6 I/O at 25 mA source/sink, the part can directly drive a low-power RF module, LED indicator, or MOSFET gate without buffering. The internal precision 4/8 MHz oscillator eliminates the external crystal cost and quiescent current draw. Compared to a discrete 555-timer-based wake-up circuit, the PIC12F519 integrates timing, ADC-free thresholding via GP3 input, and interrupt-driven wake-up in one IC, shrinking the BOM to a single 8-SOIC part plus a decoupling capacitor.

🏭

Household Appliance Control

For household appliances such as coffee makers, toasters, blenders, and small kitchen devices, the PIC12F519-I/SN delivers deterministic 8-bit control in a compact 8-SOIC footprint. Its 25 mA I/O drive can directly switch low-current relays, triac gate drivers (via optocoupler), or status LEDs. The integrated watchdog timer (WDT) protects against firmware lockup in safety-critical loops, while ICSP allows field firmware updates through the appliance housing. The wide 2.0-5.5 V supply range accepts rectified 5 V or 3.3 V rails directly. Code-protection bits safeguard OEM firmware IP. Engineers should derate I/O current when driving inductive loads - typically add a flyback diode and limit continuous sink to 20 mA. The baseline 33-instruction set is sufficient for state-machine-based user-interface control.

💡

LED Driver Replacement Circuit

Replacing legacy LED driver chips or 555-timer PWM circuits, the PIC12F519-I/SN enables software-defined LED brightness curves, color mixing (RGB), and dynamic blinking patterns that are difficult to achieve with analog driver ICs. With 6 I/O at 25 mA source/sink, three of the pins can PWM-drive three LED channels directly at modest currents; for higher-current LEDs add a MOSFET such as a 2N7002. The 8 MHz internal oscillator provides 8-bit timer TMR0 resolution sufficient for 244 Hz PWM at 8 MHz / 32 / 1 - enough to avoid visible flicker. Sleep current of 100 nA enables battery-powered decorative or indicator LED applications that draw negligible standby power. The PIC baseline core's deterministic execution is ideal for time-critical LED sequencing.

🖥️

Simple PWM Fan Controller

For 4-wire PWM fan control in PC coolers, networking switches, or industrial ventilation, the PIC12F519-I/SN generates the 25 kHz PWM tachometer-control signal using TMR0 in software-PWM mode. Its 2.0-5.5 V supply accepts both 3.3 V logic and 5 V fan tachometer inputs. The 6 I/O pins can read tach feedback, drive the PWM output, sample a thermistor voltage via an external resistor divider, and indicate fault via LED. Code-protection prevents unauthorized firmware cloning. Compared to dedicated fan-control ICs, the PIC12F519 allows custom temperature curves and acoustic profiles. Operating temperature of -40C to +85C handles chassis-internal conditions. For higher reliability, use software debounce on tach input.

🚗

Automotive Interior Accessories

While the PIC12F519-I/SN is rated for industrial -40C to +85C (not full automotive -40C to +125C), it is widely used in non-critical interior accessories such as dome-light controllers, accessory LED strips, and USB-charger indicators. The 2.0-5.5 V supply range tolerates the 12 V automotive bus after regulation to 5 V. For AEC-Q100 applications, the PIC12F519-E/SN (extended temperature) or PIC16F1823 should be specified. The 8-SOIC package is easy to hand-solder for prototype modules. The 6 I/O pins handle button input, RGB LED output, and PWM control. Engineers should add ESD protection (TVS diodes) on I/O pins exposed to user touch and reverse-battery protection on VDD.

🔧

Glue-Logic Replacement / Discrete-to-IC Migration

The PIC12F519-I/SN excels at replacing discrete logic gates (74HC00 series), timer circuits (NE555), and small PAL/GAL devices with a single programmable IC. A typical 4-gate plus 555-timer discrete circuit can be reduced to one PIC12F519 in 8-SOIC, eliminating 5-7 components and shrinking PCB area. The baseline core's 33 instructions map directly to common glue-logic functions: flip-flops, counters, one-shots, and basic state machines. ICSP allows late-stage design changes without board rework - critical when migrating from discrete prototypes. The 25 mA I/O drive eliminates the need for buffer gates in many 5 V systems. Engineers can prototype logic in C using MPLAB XC8 and verify on a PICkit programmer before committing to the 8-SOIC footprint.

Designhinweise

Estimated: at VDD=5 V and 8 MHz active CPU, total supply current is approximately 1 mA (typical) per Microchip baseline PIC datasheet curves; at 3.3 V it drops to ~0.5 mA. Sleep current of 100 nA (typical) at 3 V enables multi-year battery life for periodic-wake applications. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin to suppress switching noise; add a 10 uF bulk capacitor if the supply traces are long or shared with noisy peripherals. Avoid daisy-chaining the VDD pin to high-current loads.

Route the ICSP pins (GP0/ICSPDAT, GP1/ICSPCLK) to test points or a 2x3 header for in-circuit programming access without removing the IC. Keep the MCLR/GP3 pin accessible for hardware reset, and add a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD - required for normal operation; do not leave MCLR floating. The 8-SOIC package has 1.27 mm pin pitch, which is hand-solderable but standard reflow profiles (lead-free SnAgCu, 245 C peak) are recommended for production.

Do not exceed 25 mA continuous sink/source per I/O pin - higher currents degrade reliability. The MCLR pin is bidirectional; in ICSP mode it carries VPP high voltage and must not be pulled low externally during programming. When using the internal oscillator at 8 MHz, verify UART baud-rate error: 9600 baud at 8 MHz produces +0.16% error, acceptable; at higher baud rates (eg 115200) the error becomes unacceptable and an external crystal is required. Always set the configuration bits for the correct oscillator mode and WDT behavior before code generation.
