PIC16C710-04/P Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC16C710-04/P is an 8-bit RISC microcontroller from the PIC16C family, offering 4MHz operation, 896 bytes of One-Time Programmable (OTP) program memory (512 x 14 words), 36 bytes of data RAM, and 13 I/O pins in an 18-pin PDIP through-hole package. It executes instructions in a 200 ns instruction cycle and provides 4 channels of 8-bit Analog-to-Digital conversion with Brown-out Reset (BOR) protection, making it a classic PIC mid-range MCU.

An OTP-based 8-bit microcontroller is a CMOS device whose program memory can be written once using a device programmer and is then read-only, enabling low-cost embedded designs without the masking NRE charges of older ROM parts. PIC microcontrollers belong to the RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) family, here the PIC16 mid-range core, sitting within the broader hierarchy of microcontrollers -> 8-bit microcontrollers -> PIC microcontrollers -> PIC16 mid-range family. OTP parts are favored over flash for cost-sensitive, low-volume or one-time programmed applications where firmware is stable.

Key features of the PIC16C710-04/P include 35 single-word instructions, an 8-bit Timer0 with 8-bit prescaler, 4-channel 8-bit ADC, brown-out detection for reliable resets, and 13 bidirectional I/O pins. The '04' speed suffix indicates a 4MHz maximum clock input. The 'P' suffix designates the 18-pin PDIP package. The part runs from 2.5V to 6.0V, supporting both battery and regulated 5V supplies commonly found in industrial and consumer designs.

Architecturally, the PIC16C710 uses a Harvard-style 14-bit instruction word with separate program and data paths, and the mid-range core provides hardware stack, interrupt handling, and direct/indirect addressing. The integrated ADC multiplexes 4 analog inputs onto a single successive-approximation converter. Brown-out Reset protects against code corruption when VDD droops below the safe threshold, automatically resetting the part on power recovery.

Typical applications include entry-level A/D signal sampling, automotive body and sensor modules, appliance control boards, industrial sensor front-ends, and consumer remote or interface products. The wide operating voltage and integrated peripherals reduce BOM cost for designs that previously required multiple external components.

When designing with the PIC16C710-04/P, observe the in-circuit serial programming voltage and timing constraints. Decouple VDD with a 0.1 uF ceramic capacitor placed within 5mm of the supply pin, and route the analog AVin traces away from switching nodes. The OTP memory must be programmed before final assembly in through-hole boards.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, pin-compatible alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the bare manufacturer datasheet, providing a single reference for component selection.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Interface Boards

The PIC16C710-04/P fits industrial sensor interface boards because its integrated 4-channel 8-bit ADC samples analog signals directly, eliminating external signal-conditioning ADCs and reducing BOM count. With 896 bytes of OTP program memory, sensor calibration tables and linearization routines fit comfortably, while the 36-byte RAM handles transient acquisition buffers. Brown-out Reset ensures reliable operation across 24V industrial bus variations, and the 18-pin PDIP supports through-hole assembly favored in ruggedized enclosures. Designers can implement 4-20 mA loop readback, thermocouple cold-junction compensation, or thermistor-to-digital conversion using a single chip at 4 MHz, with 200 ns instruction execution keeping response times under 50 microseconds.

🚗

Automotive Body and Accessory Modules

The PIC16C710-04/P is suitable for entry-level automotive body modules such as lighting controllers, seat-position sensors, and HVAC flap actuators where 8-bit computing suffices. Its 2.5V-6.0V supply range tolerates automotive cranking transients, and the 4-channel ADC reads multiple resistive sensors (potentiometers, NTC thermistors) for position or temperature feedback. The 18-pin PDIP package simplifies field-replacement repairs in dealer service environments. With 13 I/O pins, designers can drive relays, read switches, and multiplex additional analog channels, all while the brown-out Reset protects against load-dump conditions that would otherwise corrupt program state.

🔧

Consumer Appliance Control Boards

In consumer appliances like washing machines, microwave ovens, and dishwashers, the PIC16C710-04/P provides low-cost 8-bit control with integrated ADC for sensor feedback. The 4-channel ADC reads water level, temperature, door state, and humidity sensors, while the 13 I/O pins drive triac interfaces, relay coils, and LED indicators. OTP memory is acceptable because appliance firmware is rarely updated, and the PDIP package accommodates hand-soldered repairs in service centers. At 4 MHz, the 200 ns instruction cycle delivers real-time response for safety interlocks (door lock, lid switch) within microseconds of an event.

📱

Battery-Powered Remote Controls and Key Fobs

The PIC16C710-04/P operates down to 2.5V, making it compatible with 2x AA or 2x AAA alkaline battery supplies commonly used in remote controls. Its modest 4 MHz clock and CMOS process keep quiescent current low, extending battery life in standby. The 4-channel ADC can monitor battery voltage and detect analog inputs from sliders or joysticks, while 13 I/O pins drive IR LEDs, RF modules, and tactile switch matrices. The PDIP package allows low-cost through-hole assembly and easy recycling for service, while the 35-instruction RISC set is straightforward for hand-written assembly in resource-constrained firmware.

🎓

Educational and Hobby Electronics

The PIC16C710-04/P remains a popular choice in university microcontroller courses and maker projects due to its DIP package breadboard compatibility, simple RISC architecture, and abundant documentation. Students can program the 896-byte OTP memory using low-cost PIC programmers like the PICkit 2/3 and immediately observe GPIO, timer, and ADC behavior. The 200 ns instruction cycle and 35-instruction set teach fundamental embedded concepts without overwhelming beginners, while the brown-out Reset demonstrates power-supply design realities. For teaching labs requiring through-hole soldering practice, the PDIP form factor is ideal.

🌡️

HVAC Climate Control Sensors

The PIC16C710-04/P suits HVAC wall thermostats and duct sensors where 8-bit processing with analog input is sufficient. The 4-channel ADC samples ambient temperature (NTC or silicon sensor), humidity, setpoint dial position, and supply rail for diagnostics. The 13 I/O pins drive LCD segments, relay coils for fan/valve control, and communication lines to indoor units. Its commercial 0C to +70C range aligns with indoor climate equipment operating environments, and the integrated brown-out Reset handles brown-outs caused by HVAC compressor inrush currents that often trip weak power supplies.

Designhinweise

Decouple VDD with a 0.1 uF ceramic capacitor placed within 5mm of the supply pin, and add a 10 uF bulk capacitor if the supply traces are long. The PIC16C710-04/P brown-out Reset activates when VDD drops below the BOR threshold; if the supply is shared with inductive loads (relays, motors), add a TVS diode to suppress transients that could trigger spurious BOR events.

Route analog input traces (AN0-AN3 on pins 17-18, 1-2) away from digital switching lines and clock traces. Use a ground pour under the analog section to reduce noise coupling. For ADC accuracy, place the analog reference pin decoupling as close as possible; if the ADC reference is shared with digital VDD, expect 1-2 LSB accuracy loss due to digital switching noise on the rail.

The PIC16C710-04/P uses OTP memory, so firmware bugs cannot be field-updated via bootloader - all corrections require physical replacement. Always validate firmware on a flash-based PIC16F equivalent (e.g., PIC16F88) during development before committing to OTP programming. Also note that MCLR must be tied to VDD through a 10 kohm resistor or driven by an open-collector/drain supervisor; leaving it floating can cause intermittent resets.

Keep the crystal or resonator (or external clock source) within 10mm of pins 15-16 (OSC2, OSC1). Use short, matched-length traces for the crystal connections to minimize parasitic capacitance. Add a 1 Mohm resistor across the crystal to bias the internal inverter into its linear region if using a low-power oscillator mode; otherwise the oscillator may fail to start at low VDD.
