PIC16C76-20/SO Übersicht

The Microchip PIC16C76-20/SO is an 8-bit CMOS OTP-based microcontroller in the PIC16C7X mid-range family, delivering 20 MHz (200 ns instruction cycle) performance with 14 KB of one-time-programmable program memory and 368 bytes of RAM. Housed in a 28-pin SOIC (SO) package, the device exposes 22 digital I/O lines, integrates a 5-channel 8-bit ADC, two 8-bit timers plus one 16-bit timer, dual capture/compare/PWM modules, and a synchronous serial port configurable as either SPI or I2C, plus a USART for asynchronous serial.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, memory (ROM/RAM), and peripherals on one silicon die, optimized for embedded control tasks. Within the broader taxonomy, the PIC16C76 belongs to the microcontroller -> 8-bit MCU -> mid-range PIC16C family -> CMOS RISC architecture. These MCUs sit below 16-bit and 32-bit microcontrollers in performance and complexity but excel in deterministic real-time control, low cost, and ultra-low standby power. The PIC16C7X family adds integrated analog (ADC) and serial peripherals on top of the baseline PIC16C5X/PIC12CXXX core, making it a bridge between pure digital logic replacement and full analog-mixed systems.

Key features include 35 single-word instructions (all single-cycle except program branches), wide operating voltage from 2.5 V to 6.0 V, commercial/industrial/extended temperature grades, 25 mA source/sink per I/O, and Microchip's nanoWatt-style low-power modes drawing 15 µA typical at 5 V/4 MHz active and 1 µA typical standby at 3 V/32 kHz. The OTP program memory allows one-time factory or field programming via Microchip development tools, and the device is code-compatible with PIC16C72/73/74/77 siblings.

Typical applications include industrial automation controllers, sensor signal conditioning, low-end motor and HVAC control, instrumentation front-ends, and legacy embedded systems where a drop-in PIC16C7X upgrade path is desired. Microchip explicitly recommends the flash-based PIC16F76 as the newer, reprogrammable alternative for new designs. When designing with this MCU, ensure the OTP programming window is satisfied during in-system programming and observe the 6.0 V absolute-maximum VDD limit to avoid latch-up. The 28-SOIC footprint is industry-standard for through-hole-free mid-range PIC designs.

Typische Anwendungen

PIC16C76-20/SO ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Industrial Automation Controllers, HVAC and Appliance Control, Sensor Signal Conditioning, Legacy Embedded Upgrades, Low-Speed Communication Gateways, Educational and Development Platforms.

🏭

Industrial Automation Controllers

The PIC16C76-20/SO fits industrial PLC sub-modules and sensor-interface boards thanks to its 5-channel 8-bit ADC, 22 GPIO at 25 mA drive, and 20 MHz / 5 MIPS throughput. At 5 V supply it can read 4-20 mA loop inputs, drive relay coils directly, and time multiplex RS-485 communication via the on-chip USART. Its 2.5-6.0 V operating range tolerates loosely regulated 24 V industrial rails stepped down to 5 V, and the 1 µA standby current suits battery-backed black-box recorders that wake on interrupt.

⚡

HVAC and Appliance Control

In HVAC damper actuators, refrigerator control boards, and washing-machine user-interface modules, the PIC16C76-20/SO delivers deterministic loop times for triac-fired heater regulation and BLDC fan commutation. The dual CCP modules generate PWM at up to 10-bit resolution for variable-frequency drives, while the 8-bit ADC reads thermistor or 4-20 mA pressure transducer inputs. The 28-SOIC footprint enables compact appliance-control PCBs, and the OTP program memory prevents firmware tampering in volume consumer production.

🧩

Sensor Signal Conditioning

The PIC16C76-20/SO is well suited to bridge-sensor excitation and digital readout for strain gauges, load cells, and pressure transducers. Its 5-channel 8-bit ADC scans up to five sensors with programmable acquisition time, and the 25 mA I/O source current can drive Wheatstone-bridge excitation directly without a separate buffer. The SSP module logs data to a serial EEPROM (e.g., 24LC256), and the USART streams readings to a host PLC. Low standby current (1 µA) enables remote, battery-powered structural-health monitoring nodes.

🔧

Legacy Embedded Upgrades

Existing products based on the PIC16C72 or PIC16C73 can upgrade to the PIC16C76-20/SO without PCB rework: all four share the 28-pin SOIC pinout documented in the Microchip pin/code compatibility chart. The PIC16C76 adds a 16-bit timer, a second CCP module, and a larger 14 KB program memory over the PIC16C72. This is the typical migration path for legacy designs seeking more peripheral headroom without redesigning the analog front-end. The same code recompiles against the PIC16F76 for new variants.

🌐

Low-Speed Communication Gateways

The PIC16C76-20/SO bridges I2C sensors and SPI peripherals to UART or RS-232 hosts in low-throughput gateway applications. Its SSP module masters I2C at 100/400 kHz to poll sensors, while the separate USART runs at 9600-115200 baud to forward data to a host controller. With 20 MHz / 5 MIPS, the MCU can sustain full-duplex translation between buses without overrun. Typical deployments include BLE-sensor-to-UART bridges and Modbus RTU slave interfaces in industrial telemetry.

🎧

Educational and Development Platforms

The PIC16C76-20/SO is widely used in university embedded-systems curricula and Microchip trainer boards because its 35-instruction RISC core, 28-SOIC footprint, and on-chip peripherals cover the canonical 8-bit teaching topics: GPIO, timers, ADC, PWM, I2C, SPI, and UART. The 200 ns instruction cycle makes timing calculations transparent for first-time students. Although newer curricula migrate to PIC16F1x or dsPIC, the C76 remains a faithful teaching artifact for OTP-memory and bare-metal programming concepts.

What is the program memory type and size of PIC16C76-20/SO?
The PIC16C76-20/SO integrates 14 KB of OTP (one-time programmable) program memory organized as 8K x 14 words. Because OTP memory cannot be erased after programming, this part is intended for volume production where firmware is finalized. For prototyping or field-upgradable designs, Microchip explicitly recommends the flash-based PIC16F76 as the modern drop-in successor in the same 28-pin package with code-compatible peripherals.
Where to buy PIC16C76-20/SO online and what is the price?
As of 2026-09-19, the PIC16C76-20/SO is listed on DigiKey (261800), Mouser, Octopart, Heisener, and Xecor. Heisener reports stock of approximately 2,336 pieces with a unit price around USD 10.24 at qty 1. Lead times on long-running NRND parts can be variable; the Heisener listing indicates 'Lead Time To Be Confirmed' with estimated delivery Dec 10 to Dec 15. Buyers should request formal quotes for production volumes.
Is PIC16C76-20/SO in stock or obsolete?
Per the 2026-09-19 distributor scrape, PIC16C76-20/SO is in 'Not Recommended for New Designs' (NRND) lifecycle status with active inventory at major distributors such as Heisener (2,336 pieces). It is not yet declared obsolete, but Microchip's product page directs new designs to PIC16F76. Lead times can swing significantly on NRND parts, so procurement should lock in allocation before EOL transition.
What is the difference between PIC16C76-20/SO and PIC16F76?
The PIC16C76-20/SO uses 14 KB of OTP program memory that can be written only once, while the PIC16F76 substitutes 14 KB of flash memory that can be reprogrammed thousands of times. Both share the same 28-pin SOIC footprint, the same 5-channel 8-bit ADC, and the same SSP+USART peripherals, making PIC16F76 a true drop-in upgrade path. PIC16F76 also adds ICD (in-circuit debugger) support, which the OTP 'C76 lacks.
What is the maximum clock frequency and instruction cycle time of PIC16C76-20/SO?
The PIC16C76-20/SO operates up to 20 MHz external clock with a 200 ns instruction cycle, since the PIC16C7X core executes one instruction every four oscillator clocks. All 35 single-word instructions execute in a single cycle except program branches which take two cycles. This gives roughly 5 MIPS throughput, sufficient for sensor sampling, slow-bus communication, and basic control loops.
What is the best drop-in replacement for PIC16C76-20/SO?
The best drop-in replacement is the Microchip PIC16F76-I/SO, which carries the same 14 KB program memory, 5-channel 8-bit ADC, and 28-SOIC footprint but uses flash memory instead of OTP. Per Microchip's product page and the PIC16C76 family migration note, PIC16F76 is the recommended new-design successor. For exact pin and code compatibility in a 28-pin SOIC, PIC16F76-I/SO shares the same pinout diagram documented in the Microchip 28-pin PICmicro pin/code compatibility chart.
What is the operating voltage range of PIC16C76-20/SO?
The PIC16C76-20/SO operates from 2.5 V to 6.0 V. The 20 MHz speed grade is specified across this full range per the datasheet, though low-voltage operation may reduce ADC accuracy and oscillator drive margin. The absolute-maximum VDD is 6.0 V; transient excursions above this can induce CMOS latch-up. A 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of VDD is recommended.
How many I/O pins and ADC channels does PIC16C76-20/SO provide?
The PIC16C76-20/SO provides 22 bidirectional digital I/O pins rated at 25 mA source and 25 mA sink, plus 5 channels of 8-bit analog-to-digital conversion multiplexed onto PORTA. Each ADC channel can be software-configured for analog or digital function, and the converter uses successive approximation with a programmable acquisition time. Two Capture/Compare/PWM modules share PORTB pins for timing-critical outputs.
Does PIC16C76-20/SO support I2C and SPI?
Yes, the PIC16C76-20/SO integrates a Synchronous Serial Port (SSP) module that can be configured as either a 3-wire SPI peripheral or a 2-wire I2C bus master/slave. A separate USART provides asynchronous RS-232/RS-485 communication independently of the SSP. This combination allows the MCU to bridge an I2C sensor to a UART host, or to talk to a serial EEPROM while monitoring a UART console.
Where to download PIC16C76-20/SO datasheet PDF?
The official PIC16C76-20/SO datasheet is published by Microchip as document 30298d and is available at https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/30298d.pdf. It contains the electrical characteristics, pinout diagram, instruction set summary, ADC timing diagrams, and OTP programming specifications for the entire PIC16C7X family including PIC16C72/73/74/76/77 siblings. Third-party mirrors exist on FindIC and Digchip but the Microchip URL is the authoritative source.
Where to find PIC16C76-20/SO pinout?
The PIC16C76-20/SO pinout is documented on page 1 of the Microchip datasheet (document 30298d). The 28-SOIC pinout places VDD on pin 20, VSS on pin 19, MCLR/VPP on pin 1, OSC1 on pin 13, and OSC2 on pin 14, with PORTA (RA0-RA5) on pins 2-7, RB0-RB7 on pins 8-15 and 21-25, and RC0-RC7 on pins 16-18, 26, 27, 11, 12. Cross-reference: the 28-pin SOIC, SPDIP, and SSOP packages share the same pin assignments.
What is the standby current of PIC16C76-20/SO in sleep mode?
The PIC16C76-20/SO draws a typical standby current of 1 µA at 3 V with the 32 kHz Timer1 oscillator running, per the PIC16C7X family datasheet. Active current at 5 V / 4 MHz is approximately 15 µA typical. Watchdog timer disable and peripheral shut-down via the PCON/PIE registers can further reduce sleep drain. This makes the part suitable for battery-backed sensor nodes with multi-year operating life.
What are the key specifications of PIC16C76-20/SO that engineers should know?
The PIC16C76-20/SO key specifications are: 8-bit PIC16C7X mid-range core at 20 MHz (200 ns cycle, 5 MIPS); 14 KB OTP program memory; 368 bytes RAM; 22 digital I/O at 25 mA source/sink; 5-channel 8-bit ADC; two 8-bit timers plus one 16-bit timer; 2 CCP modules; SSP for SPI/I2C plus separate USART; 2.5 V to 6.0 V VDD; 28-pin SOIC package; and NRND lifecycle status pointing to PIC16F76 as the modern replacement.
What is the best Atmel or ST equivalent for PIC16C76-20/SO?
Cross-brand 8-bit MCU equivalents that offer similar pin-count and feature density include the Atmel/Microchip ATMEGA8535-16AU (AVR core, 8 KB flash, 28-pin TQFN/QFN) and ATMEGA8-16AI (8 KB flash, 28-pin PDIP). These are NOT pin-compatible drop-ins - they differ in toolchain, peripherals map, and instruction set - but they target the same 8-bit embedded control niche. For genuine drop-in PIC16C76-20/SO replacement without PCB rework, stay within the Microchip PIC16C7X family.

Auswahlhilfe

Choose PIC16C76-20/SO when your design needs 8-bit PIC mid-range performance at 20 MHz in a 28-SOIC surface-mount package, the firmware is finalized and a low-cost OTP part is acceptable, and the operating environment is commercial temperature (0C to +70C). Choose PIC16C76-20I/SO for industrial temperature (-40C to +85C) and PIC16C76-20E/SO for extended (-40C to +125C), both with identical 28-SOIC drop-in footprints. Choose PIC16F76-I/SO for new designs that benefit from flash memory field-upgradability and ICD debugging - Microchip explicitly recommends it as the modern replacement for the 'C76 OTP family. Avoid PIC16C76-10/SO unless 10 MHz is sufficient; otherwise the -20 speed grade is preferred for headroom. For new designs today, prefer PIC16F76 or PIC16F1x over the entire OTP 'C76 family given the NRND status.

Wichtigste Unterscheidungsmerkmale

  • One-Time-Programmable memory with industrial temperature options (vs. PIC16F76-I/SO)
  • Code- and pin-compatible 28-SOIC upgrade path from PIC16C72/73/74 family (vs. PIC16C73B-04I/SO)
  • 20 MHz / 5 MIPS performance with 1 µA standby current (vs. PIC16C76-10/SO)

Designhinweise

PIC16C76-20/SO operates from 2.5 V to 6.0 V and draws approximately 15 µA typical active at 5 V / 4 MHz and 1 µA typical standby at 3 V / 32 kHz. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of VDD (pin 27) and a bulk 10 µF tantalum near the MCU. Do NOT exceed 6.0 V; latch-up can permanently damage the CMOS die. For battery applications, use sleep mode aggressively and gate peripheral clocks via PCON.

Use the standard 28-SOIC land pattern from IPC-7351 (1.27 mm pitch). Keep the oscillator traces short (less than 10 mm) and surround the crystal with a ground pour to attenuate radiated EMI. MCLR/VPP (pin 1) requires a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD; adding a 100 nF capacitor here creates a power-on-reset delay. Route ICSP clock (RB6/PGC, pin 24) and data (RB7/PGD, pin 25) traces to a 5-pin header matching the Microchip ICD layout for field programming access.

Because PIC16C76 uses OTP (one-time programmable) memory, a failed programming cycle bricks the device. Verify VDD is within 4.5-5.5 V during OTP programming and that MCLR/VPP rises to 13-14 V cleanly with no ringing. Unlike flash-based PIC16F76, this part CANNOT be reprogrammed - budget extra units for development. Also note that PORTA bit 4 (RA4) is open-drain and requires an external pull-up if used as a digital output driving a logic-high load.
