PIC16F1454T-I/ST Übersicht

The Microchip PIC16F1454T-I/ST is an 8-bit PIC16F microcontroller with integrated USB 2.0 full-speed support, 14KB (8K x 14) flash program memory, 1KB RAM, and a 48MHz internal oscillator, housed in a 14-pin TSSOP package. The 'T' suffix denotes tape-and-reel packaging and the 'I' indicates the industrial temperature grade (-40C to +85C). Built on Microchip's enhanced mid-range core with 49 instructions and 16 stack levels, it executes instructions in 200ns at 48MHz and supports self-read/write flash with high endurance.

A microcontroller (MCU) is an integrated circuit that combines a CPU core, program memory (flash/ROM), working memory (RAM), and programmable peripherals into a single chip. The PIC16F1454 belongs to the 8-bit PIC16 family of microcontrollers, which sit at the entry-level of Microchip's product hierarchy (PIC16F -> 8-bit MCU -> MCU -> semiconductor). The 'XLP' (eXtreme Low Power) branding signals sleep currents in the microamp range, which is critical for battery-powered USB HID, sensor, and remote-control designs.

Key features include 128 B of non-volatile data storage (EEPROM-like), a Universal Serial Bus 2.0 module with clock recovery from the USB host (eliminating an external crystal for many USB applications), an MI2C/SPI master module, and 8 general-purpose I/O pins. The internal 48MHz oscillator supports USB full-speed operation without an external resonator, simplifying the BOM and shrinking the PCB footprint.

Typical applications include USB HID peripherals (keyboards, mice, custom HID devices), USB-to-UART bridges, sensor hubs, low-cost capacitive touch interfaces, lighting controls, and consumer products that need a single-chip USB solution at minimum external component count. The wide 2.3V-5.5V operating range also suits direct USB bus-powered designs.

When designing with this part, leverage the internal 48MHz oscillator for USB to avoid external crystal cost, but add a 0.1uF decoupling capacitor near every VDD pin and route the USB D+/D- lines as a 90-ohm differential pair. The 14-pin TSSOP leaves only 8 usable GPIO, so plan pin allocation early.

This page consolidates verified distributor pricing, drop-in TSSOP-14 alternatives, and practical USB design guidance that goes beyond what the manufacturer datasheet alone provides.

At typical HID polling rates of 125 Hz, the XLP idle current stays in the microamp range, making it suitable for battery-powered wireless HID dongles.

🌐

USB CDC Virtual COM Port Bridge

For low-cost USB-to-UART bridges, the PIC16F1454T-I/ST runs a CDC ACM class stack on its USB 2.0 module and uses the MI2C/SPI master to interface with an external UART transceiver or to expose a serial console via direct bit-banging on the GPIO. The 48 MHz internal oscillator delivers clean USB packet timing without an external resonator, while the 2.3 V-5.5 V VDD range lets the part run directly off USB VBUS (5 V) without a separate regulator. The 128-byte EEPROM provides storage for VID/PID or user configuration, and the 8 GPIO pins remain available for handshaking signals (RTS, CTS) when needed.

🎧

Capacitive Touch Interface with USB

The PIC16F1454T-I/ST's MI2C/SPI master module interfaces directly with Microchip's MTCH10xx capacitive-touch front-end ICs, while the USB 2.0 module reports touch events to a host PC as HID digitizer or vendor-class reports. The XLP low-power modes keep idle current under 1 uA, and the 8 GPIO pins accommodate wake-from-touch logic. This combination enables single-chip USB touch-pad, slider, and button interfaces for consumer peripherals, kitchen appliances, and industrial control panels where the small 14-pin TSSOP fits into space-constrained enclosures.

🏭

Sensor Hub / Data Logger

The PIC16F1454T-I/ST operates as a USB-tethered sensor hub by polling I2C sensors through its MI2C/SPI master and streaming readings to a host over USB CDC. The 1 KB RAM buffers incoming sensor data while the 14 KB flash holds USB stack and sensor parsing routines. The wide 2.3 V-5.5 V supply range lets the device run from a single 18650 cell, and the XLP sleep modes drop quiescent current to ~20 nA between samples. The 128-byte EEPROM stores calibration constants, and the 8 GPIO pins provide interrupt wake-up lines from external sensors.

💡

Lighting Control (DMX / Custom USB)

For USB-controlled LED lighting, the PIC16F1454T-I/ST receives DMX-over-USB frames via its USB 2.0 module and generates PWM or constant-current drive signals on the GPIO to control LED strings. The 14 KB flash fits a full DMX512 receiver stack plus color-mixing firmware, while the 48 MHz internal oscillator provides accurate 8-bit PWM at typical 1 kHz refresh rates. The industrial -40 C to +85 C temperature grade supports indoor architectural and stage-lighting enclosures, and the small TSSOP-14 footprint enables placement inside dimmer packs and inline controllers.

💻

USB-Based Firmware Update / Bootloader Target

The PIC16F1454T-I/ST can serve as the host-side microcontroller in a USB DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) bootloader target, leveraging its on-chip USB module to receive new firmware images over USB and self-program its 14 KB flash via the high-endurance Flash (HEF) feature. The 128-byte non-volatile data EEPROM stores bootloader flags and revision counters. The internal 48 MHz oscillator ensures USB timing compliance without external crystals, and the 14-pin TSSOP allows the part to be placed on small accessory boards that only need USB-CDC for firmware updates.

Designhinweise

Route the USB D+ (RA0/ICSPDAT) and D- (RA1/ICSPCLK) traces as a 90 ohm differential pair with continuous ground reference underneath, kept under 50 mm in length to meet USB 2.0 signal-integrity masks. Place a 0.1 uF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin and a bulk 10 uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor near the device. The internal 48 MHz oscillator eliminates an external crystal, but still requires clean analog-style layout: keep noisy digital traces (PWM, switching regulators) more than 10 mm away from the oscillator pins and D+/D- pair.

The PIC16F1454T-I/ST draws ~5 mA at full 48 MHz operation and drops to ~20 nA in XLP sleep with peripherals off. For USB bus-powered designs, add a 10 uF bulk capacitor on VBUS to absorb inrush current during enumeration and prevent VBUS sag that can reset the device. The internal regulator derived from VDD supports the 2.3 V-5.5 V range; no separate core voltage rail is needed, simplifying the power tree for 2xAA or single-cell Li-ion battery designs.

Common pitfalls when using PIC16F1454T-I/ST: (1) The ICSPDAT and ICSPCLK pins RA0/RA1 are multiplexed with USB D+/D-, so ICSP programming over the same pins during firmware bring-up requires disconnecting the USB bus to avoid driver conflict. (2) The MCLR pin (RA5) is shared with the MCLR reset; leaving it floating causes erratic resets - always tie RA5 to VDD via a 10 kohm pull-up for normal operation. (3) The 14-pin TSSOP has only 8 usable GPIO, so plan pin allocation early - do not assume all peripherals can coexist simultaneously.
