PIC16F1575-I/SL Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC16F1575-I/SL is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller from the PIC16F157x family, delivering up to 32 MHz CPU performance with 14 KB (8K x 14 words) of Flash program memory and 1024 bytes of RAM in a 14-pin SOIC (SL) package. The device integrates four 16-bit Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) peripherals with independent timers, a 10-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), and Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) that allow hardware-driven functions without CPU intervention. According to the manufacturer datasheet, the part operates from 2.3 V to 5.5 V across the industrial -40 C to +85 C temperature range and is housed in a 14-SOIC 150-mil package.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, non-volatile program memory (Flash), volatile data memory (RAM), and a mix of analog and digital peripherals. Within the broader taxonomy, the PIC16F1575 sits under 8-bit microcontrollers -> microcontrollers -> microprocessors & MCUs -> embedded processors -> semiconductors. Its enhanced mid-range (XLP) core supports a 49-instruction set with 16 hardware stack levels and deterministic interrupt latency, making it appropriate for real-time control tasks where predictability matters more than raw throughput.

Key differentiating features of the PIC16F1575-I/SL include its four 16-bit PWMs (each with dedicated timer base and period register, capable of edge-aligned and center-aligned modes), 10-bit ADC with acquisition timer, 5-bit DAC, comparator, EUSART, MSSP (SPI/I2C), two 8-bit timers, one 16-bit timer, and 12 I/O pins. The device also features the eXtreme Low Power (XLP) sleep mode drawing sub-microamp currents for battery-driven designs.

Architecturally, the PIC16F1575 employs a Harvard RISC architecture with separate program and data buses, allowing instruction fetch and data access in a single clock cycle. The on-chip high-precision 16 MHz internal oscillator can be used directly or scaled to 32 MHz via the 4x Phase-Locked Loop, removing the need for external crystals in cost-sensitive designs. Configurable logic cells (CLC), Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), and Numerically Controlled Oscillator (NCO) provide synthesizable digital functions in hardware, freeing the core for higher-level tasks.

Typical applications include LED lighting drivers (where the four 16-bit PWMs allow individual channel intensity control for RGBW strips), stepper and brushed DC motor control, switch-mode power supply (SMPS) digital control loops, battery chargers, fan controllers, and general-purpose sensor interfacing. The 10-bit ADC and op-amp peripheral allow direct signal conditioning of low-level analog inputs without external components.

When designing with this MCU, pay particular attention to the maximum I/O current budget (per-pin and aggregate) and the recommended decoupling network (typically 100 nF plus 10 uF bulk near VDD). The internal oscillator is factory-calibrated to +/- 1 % across voltage and temperature, but a software PLL trim can tighten this further for time-sensitive protocols such as UART at high baud rates.

Typische Anwendungen

PIC16F1575-I/SL ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: LED Lighting Drivers, Stepper Motor Control, Switch-Mode Power Supply (SMPS) Digital Control, Battery Chargers and Power Banks, Sensor Interface and IoT Edge Nodes, Brushed DC Motor and Fan Control.

💡

LED Lighting Drivers

The PIC16F1575-I/SL is purpose-built for LED lighting. Its four independent 16-bit PWMs each drive a channel with up to 16-bit duty cycle resolution (>65 000 steps), eliminating flicker and supporting smooth color mixing on RGBW strips. The internal 32 MHz clock and 10-bit ADC allow closed-loop current regulation through a sense resistor and op-amp front end, while the XLP sleep mode draws sub-microamp standby current for Always-on smart-bulb designs.

🏭

Stepper Motor Control

Stepper drives need precise, high-resolution PWM phase generation. The PIC16F1575-I/SL delivers four 16-bit PWMs that can be software-interleaved to generate microstepping waveforms at 1/256 step resolution. Its 32 MHz CPU provides ample headroom for acceleration/deceleration ramps, while the 10-bit ADC monitors back-EMF for stall detection. The Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG) hardware IP supports dead-band insertion for half-bridge drivers.

⚡

Switch-Mode Power Supply (SMPS) Digital Control

Digital SMPS control loops benefit from the PIC16F1575-I/SL's 4 x 16-bit PWMs (each independently triggerable), 10-bit ADC with dedicated acquisition timer, and on-chip op-amp peripheral. The MCU can implement peak-current-mode control of a buck/boost/SEPIC topology at switching frequencies up to 1 MHz when each PWM is paired with the high-speed ADC. The 32 MHz CPU executes the PID compensator in well under 1 us, keeping control-loop latency well within typical 10 us target.

🔋

Battery Chargers and Power Banks

For single-cell Li-ion/LiFePO4 chargers, the PIC16F1575-I/SL runs the CC/CV algorithm, samples charge current with its 10-bit ADC, and modulates a synchronous buck through a 16-bit PWM. Its wide 2.3-5.5 V operating range allows direct connection to the USB input rail without a separate LDO. The XLP sleep mode drops quiescent current below 1 uA, preserving battery shelf life when the host is unplugged.

🧩

Sensor Interface and IoT Edge Nodes

IoT edge nodes benefit from the PIC16F1575-I/SL's low-power sleep, 10-bit ADC for analog sensors, MSSP for SPI/I2C sensor buses, and EUSART for UART-linked radios. The Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) allow sensor polling and threshold-triggered wake-up without CPU involvement, holding average current in the single-digit microamp range. The 14 KB Flash accommodates small TLS or LoRaWAN-style protocol stacks.

🏭

Brushed DC Motor and Fan Control

The PIC16F1575-I/SL drives brushed DC motors and fans with closed-loop speed regulation. A 16-bit PWM sets the power-stage duty, the 10-bit ADC reads tachometer or back-EMF, and the 32 MHz core executes the PID loop in microseconds. The hardware CWG block generates complementary drive signals with programmable dead-time, reducing switching losses in half-bridge drivers. The 14-SOIC footprint fits inside the motor housing.

Can PIC16F1574-I/ST replace PIC16F1575-I/SL directly?
The PIC16F1574-I/ST is a same-footprint family member but ships in TSSOP-14, not SOIC-14, so it is not a true drop-in for the PIC16F1575-I/SL (14-SOIC) PCB land pattern. If the PCB was designed for SOIC-14 only, the TSSOP-14 pad pattern will not align. For a true SOIC-14 drop-in with reduced Flash, no Microchip part matches exactly; design changes to the land pattern or firmware size would be required.
When should I choose PIC16F1575-I/SL over PIC16F18345-I/SL?
Choose PIC16F1575-I/SL when the application is dominated by high-resolution PWM generation (LED lighting, SMPS control, motor drive) where its four dedicated 16-bit PWMs are an advantage. Choose PIC16F18345-I/SL when more general-purpose peripherals (12-bit ADC, DAC, op-amps, larger memory) are needed. Both are 14-pin SOIC family parts but target different sweet spots within the PIC16F1xxx portfolio.
Is PIC16F1575-I/SL suitable for LED lighting applications?
Yes, the PIC16F1575-I/SL is an excellent fit for LED lighting. Its four independent 16-bit PWMs allow per-channel intensity control of RGBW LED strings with 16-bit resolution (>65 000 steps), eliminating LED flicker and supporting smooth color mixing. The 10-bit ADC handles ambient-light sensing and supply voltage feedback, while the XLP sleep mode keeps standby power below 1 uA for Always-on smart-lighting designs.

Designhinweise

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin (pin 1) with a short trace to the VSS ground pour. Add a bulk 10 uF tantalum or ceramic near the MCU for switching transient support. The PIC16F1575's internal voltage regulator requires both capacitors within 5 mm of the package to keep VDD core ripple below 50 mVpp during PWM transitions.

The 14-SOIC package has a thermal pad requirement of roughly 1 square inch of copper pour on VDD/VSS layers to dissipate ~0.5 W under worst-case CPU+ADC+all-PWM operation. Route all PWM outputs away from analog ADC inputs to minimize digital crosstalk, and place a ground guard ring around the MCLR pin to suppress ESD coupling into the reset line. Keep traces under the package short - the SOIC lead inductance affects signal integrity above 50 MHz.

Do not leave the MCLR/RA3 pin floating. A 10 kohm pull-up to VDD is required for normal operation; without it, the part will randomly enter reset under noisy conditions. When using the internal oscillator, set the OSCCON and PLL configuration bits correctly - failing to enable the 4x PLL results in 8 MHz operation, halving PWM frequency and ADC throughput. Finally, never write to Flash while the ADC is sampling on the same bank; this can inject noise into the conversion.
