PIC16F1703-I/ST Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC16F1703-I/ST is an 8-bit enhanced mid-range flash microcontroller in a 14-pin TSSOP package with 32 MHz CPU speed, 3.5 KB (2K x 14 words) program Flash, 256 bytes SRAM, and 128 bytes of high-endurance EEPROM. It integrates Microchip's XLP extreme-low-power technology with intelligent analog peripherals, including on-chip operational amplifiers, a 10-bit ADC with computation, an 8-bit DAC, and Core Independent Peripherals such as the Configurable Logic Cell (CLC), Complementary Output Generator (COG), and Zero-Cross Detect (ZCD). The device also provides Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) for flexible signal routing on limited-pin packages.

A microcontroller (MCU) is an integrated circuit that combines a CPU, program memory, RAM, and peripherals on a single die. Within the product taxonomy, the PIC16F1703 sits in the 8-bit MCU tier (PIC16 family -> 8-bit MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded IC -> semiconductor), positioned between Microchip's baseline PIC10/PIC12 devices and the 16-bit PIC24/dsPIC families. Its enhanced mid-range core executes most instructions in a single 200 ns cycle at 32 MHz and supports 49 instructions with hardware multiply, making it suitable for general-purpose control with deterministic interrupt latency.

Key differentiating features include eXtreme Low Power (XLP) operation with currents as low as , a 10-bit ADC with up to 28 channels, 8-bit and 5-bit DACs, two op-amps with configurable gain stages, two 10-bit PWM modules, an 8-bit timer, and two comparators. Communication interfaces include EUSART, MSSP (I2C/SPI), and an integrated temperature indicator. PPS remaps digital peripherals to virtually any I/O pin, a critical advantage when designing on the 14-pin TSSOP.

Typical applications span consumer white goods, IoT sensor nodes, LED lighting control, battery-powered instruments, and low-cost motor control. The combination of COG and ZCD enables zero-cross switching for TRIAC dimmers and AC line sensing without external circuitry. In a 14-pin TSSOP, the PIC16F1703 targets designs that need more analog integration than a PIC16F1503 but fewer pins than a 20-pin PIC16F1705 variant.

When designing with this part, leverage PPS to route peripherals after PCB layout is finalized and use the on-chip op-amps to eliminate external analog components. The COG/ZCD combination can replace dedicated dimmer ASICs, while the ADC's hardware Capacitive Voltage Divider (CVD) simplifies touch and proximity sensing without software overhead.

Designhinweise

Place a 0.1 uF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin (pin 1) of the PIC16F1703-I/ST, with a trace length under 5 mm. Add a bulk 10 uF capacitor on the same rail near the MCU. The TSSOP-14 ground pad (VSS, pin 14) should connect directly to a low-impedance ground plane via a short, wide trace or via-in-pad if the design permits. PPS allows you to remap peripherals after layout is finalized, reducing pinout-related rework.

Configure the PIC16F1703-I/ST to use Sleep mode between sensor reads to achieve XLP currents. According to the Microchip datasheet, typical sleep current is in the sub-microampere range. Estimated: at 3.3 V VDD with watchdog disabled, sleep current is below 1 uA. Use the RTCC with a 32.768 kHz external crystal for timekeeping during sleep, allowing periodic wake-ups without a high-power timer running.

When using the on-chip op-amps for high-impedance sensor signals, route the op-amp inputs (RA0/RA1) with short traces and guard the inputs from digital switching noise. The TSSOP-14 package has limited pin spacing; place analog input traces on an inner layer with ground shielding if the application has high di/dt noise (such as motor control or TRIAC dimming). Use the CLC peripheral to gate digital signals during sensitive analog measurements.

Do not leave the MCLR pin (pin 4) floating - always tie it to VDD via a 10 kohm pull-up resistor, or to the output of a reset supervisor for improved noise immunity. Configure unused I/O pins as outputs low to minimize power consumption and noise injection. When using COG to drive an H-bridge, set the dead-band delay to at least 200 ns to prevent shoot-through during FET transitions.
