PIC16F1826T-I/ML Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC16F1826T-I/ML is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller from the PIC® XLP™ mTouch™ 16F family, integrating 3.5KB (2K x 14) of self-read/write Flash program memory, 256 bytes of RAM and 256 bytes of EEPROM in a 28-pin QFN (6x6 mm) package. It executes instructions from an enhanced mid-range core at up to 32 MHz via the internal oscillator, with 49 instructions, 16-level hardware stack and an instruction cycle of 125 ns at 32 MHz. According to the manufacturer datasheet, the device operates from 2.5 V to 5.5 V across the industrial -40 °C to +85 °C temperature range and consumes as little as 20 nA in sleep with the nanoWatt XLP technology.

What is a PIC16 8-bit microcontroller? A PIC16 (Peripheral Interface Controller, 16-bit instruction word) is a Harvard-architecture 8-bit RISC microcontroller widely used in embedded designs because of its deterministic instruction timing, low power consumption and rich integrated peripherals. Within the Microchip taxonomy the PIC16F1826 sits in the enhanced mid-range core family (PIC16F1xxx), which adds C-compiler friendly architecture, multiple communication peripherals and modern analog resources compared with baseline PIC10/12/16 devices. MCUs belong to the broader category of microcontrollers → processors → integrated circuits → semiconductors.

Key features include an integrated capacitive mTouch™ sensing module, a Data Signal Modulator (DSM) for generating custom waveforms, a Master Synchronous Serial Port (MSSP) supporting SPI and I²C, an EUSART with auto-baud, a 12-I/O port set, an internal 32 MHz oscillator with PLL, and 14-channel 10-bit ADC plus two comparators and a capture/compare/PWM module. The 28-QFN package (6 mm x 6 mm) provides a small PCB footprint suitable for space-constrained designs while exposing the full peripheral set.

Typical applications include capacitive touch user interfaces (buttons, sliders, proximity sensing), battery-powered sensor nodes exploiting nanoWatt XLP technology, LED lighting control with PWM dimming, low-cost consumer appliances and industrial control modules requiring SPI or I²C slaves. The auto-baud EUSART simplifies LIN-bus nodes and 8-bit UART bridges.

When designing with this device, ensure the supply decoupling network uses a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 2 mm of VDD, and respect the in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) pin assignments (ICSPCLK/ICSPDAT) on dedicated I/O to avoid blocking debug access. The internal 32 MHz oscillator is trimmed at the factory and provides ±1 % accuracy across voltage and temperature; external crystal use is optional.

🔧

Capacitive Touch User Interface

The PIC16F1826T-I/ML is purpose-built for capacitive touch human-machine interfaces thanks to its integrated mTouch™ sensing module, internal 32 MHz oscillator for fast charge/discharge timing, and 12 I/O lines that each support touch channels with no external circuitry beyond copper pads. The device's CTMU (Charge Time Measurement Unit) provides stable capacitance-to-digital conversion across temperature, while the MSSP drives SPI or I²C to a host controller or display. Its 256-byte RAM is sufficient for up to ~12 button states plus debounce, and the 2.5 V-5.5 V supply range supports battery-powered remote controls and appliance panels directly from 2-3 AA cells.

📱

Battery-Powered Wireless Sensor Node

The PIC16F1826T-I/ML's nanoWatt XLP technology delivers sleep currents as low as 20 nA with full RAM retention, enabling multi-year battery life on a single CR2032 coin cell in duty-cycled sensor applications. The internal 32 MHz oscillator lets the MCU wake, sample sensors, transmit via SPI to a sub-GHz radio and return to sleep in under 1 ms. Its 256-byte EEPROM provides non-volatile calibration storage without external memory, and the wide 2.5 V-5.5 V supply range accepts 3.3 V or 5 V rails common in IoT sensor modules. Compared with discrete 8-bit MCU + external EEPROM designs, the PIC16F1826T-I/ML cuts BOM cost and board area by roughly 40 %.

💡

LED Lighting Control with PWM Dimming

The PIC16F1826T-I/ML drives multi-channel LED fixtures using its Enhanced Capture/Compare/PWM (ECCP) module and two additional CCP modules, giving three independent PWM outputs for RGB or tunable-white color mixing. The 32 MHz core supports PWM frequencies above 100 kHz to avoid audible flicker and to drive power MOSFET gates directly through the I/O pins. The 10-bit ADC reads ambient light sensors and potentiometers for closed-loop dimming, while the EUSART with auto-baud accepts DMX-512 or proprietary LED-control protocols. Its 2.5 V-5.5 V supply range lets it run from 3.3 V digital rails or 5 V analog rails typically found in architectural lighting drivers.

🏭

LIN Bus / UART Bridging in Industrial Modules

The PIC16F1826T-I/ML's EUSART with hardware auto-baud detection is optimized for LIN (Local Interconnect Network) bus slave nodes in automotive body and industrial applications, eliminating the need for an external LIN transceiver's baud-tuning firmware. The MSSP provides SPI or I²C for connecting to local sensor clusters (e.g., temperature, pressure or motor encoders) while the EUSART bridges to the LIN master. Industrial -40 °C to +85 °C temperature range, 2.5 V-5.5 V supply and integrated 32 MHz oscillator make it suitable for factory automation slave modules and HVAC control panels where automotive-grade robustness at consumer pricing is required.

⚡

Low-Cost Consumer Appliance Controller

Small kitchen and personal-care appliances benefit from the PIC16F1826T-I/ML's combination of 3.5 KB Flash for application firmware, 256-byte EEPROM for storing user settings (temperature preset, timer duration), and the mTouch™ capacitive interface for sealed glass-front panels that resist moisture and grime. The Data Signal Modulator (DSM) generates custom waveforms for buzzer tones or triac phase-angle control of AC heaters and motors. With 12 I/O lines and a wide 2.5 V-5.5 V supply it directly drives seven-segment displays, relay coils and triac optocouplers without external logic, minimizing PCB size and total BOM cost.

🔧

Educational / Hobbyist Embedded Platform

The PIC16F1826T-I/ML is widely adopted in universities, maker projects and PICkit-programmable starter kits because of Microchip's free MPLAB X IDE, XC8 compiler and extensive application-note library. Its 32 MHz instruction rate and 14-bit instruction word teach the fundamentals of Harvard-architecture assembly while supporting C programming for higher-level courses. The 28-QFN package is compatible with low-cost QFN breakout boards, and the ICSP (In-Circuit Serial Programming) interface allows students to reprogram the device without removing it from the breadboard, accelerating iterative labs in embedded-systems, microcontroller-architecture and digital-I/O classes.

Designhinweise

Decouple VDD with a 100 nF X7R ceramic capacitor placed within 2 mm of the VDD/VSS pins, plus a 10 µF bulk capacitor near the supply pin. For battery-powered designs drawing from a CR2032 coin cell, place the bulk capacitor on the high-impedance side to limit inrush during sleep-to-active transitions. Enable the nanoWatt XLP Sleep mode with the VREGPM bit cleared and unused peripherals disabled to achieve the 20 nA typical sleep current specified in the datasheet.

The 28-QFN package's exposed thermal pad (EP) must be soldered to a VSS plane with at least 8 thermal vias (0.3 mm drill) connecting to an inner VSS layer for heat spreading. Keep the EP free of signal traces to avoid violating the QFN solder-joint reliability design rule. Trace the ICSP clock and data signals (ICSPCLK/ICSPDAT) on RA1/RA0 with 4 mil (0.1 mm) width and route them on the top layer without vias to the programming header for reliable in-circuit programming.

Do not use the PIC16F1826T-I/ML with the MCLR pin left floating - the weak internal pull-up is not sufficient in noisy environments; tie MCLR to VDD through a 10 kΩ resistor and add a 100 nF cap to VSS to filter ESD events. When migrating code from baseline PIC10/12/16 mid-range to enhanced mid-range, verify that PCLATH and PCON initialization is correct, because the enhanced core uses a different interrupt-context save/restore sequence that trips up legacy code.

For capacitive touch (mTouch) sensor traces, keep the touch pad-to-pin trace length under 50 mm and route them away from fast-switching digital signals (PWM, SPI clock) by at least 5 mm or guard them with a grounded copper shield. Ground the mTouch reference capacitor (CTMU) to a low-noise analog ground to prevent drift in capacitance measurements across temperature. Avoid running the I²C bus above 400 kHz with pull-ups above 3.3 kΩ in noisy industrial environments, as the open-drain edges will ring.
