PIC16F1847T-I/SS Übersicht
A microcontroller (microcontroller) is a single-chip computer that combines a CPU core, non-volatile program memory (typically flash), working RAM, and configurable peripherals on one die, intended to be embedded inside a larger product as the system controller. Within the broader semiconductor taxonomy it sits under: microcontroller -> embedded controller -> MCU family -> 8-bit MCU -> PIC16 enhanced mid-range -> PIC16F184x sub-family. The PIC16F1847 belongs to the latter with more than a dozen pin-count variants sharing a common core, instruction set, and peripheral set.
Key features of the PIC16F1847T-I/SS include: 49-instruction enhanced mid-range core with 16-level hardware stack; on-chip 32 MHz internal oscillator (±1% typical) eliminating external crystals in many designs; 256-byte EEPROM data memory; 17-channel 10-bit ADC; two 8-bit timers plus one 16-bit timer; two PWM modules with complementary outputs; and integrated temperature indicator. The 20-SSOP variant exposes 16 I/O pins with individual weak pull-ups, interrupt-on-change capability, and 25 mA source/sink per pin.
Architecturally, the device uses a 14-bit instruction word RISC core with a two-stage pipeline, allowing most instructions to execute in a single 125 ns cycle at 32 MHz. Its peripheral pin-select (PPS) module remaps digital peripherals to a wide choice of I/O pads, simplifying PCB routing. The XLP nanoWatt technology adds deep-sleep, watchdog-timed wake-up, and ultra-low-power real-time clock modes that are critical for battery-powered designs.
Typical applications include capacitive touch user interfaces on consumer appliances, low-battery sensor nodes with years of service life, industrial control buttons and keypads, LED driver controllers with PWM dimming, and small home-automation bridges. Its small footprint and low power budget make it a common choice for replacing mechanical switches and rotary encoders with touch-based inputs.
When designing with the PIC16F1847T-I/SS, place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of VDD and a 1 µF bulk capacitor near the supply pin. Use the on-chip internal oscillator for cost-sensitive designs but verify timing margins for UART baud rates above 115200. For in-circuit programming, reserve ICSPDAT/ICSPCLK pins (RB7/RB6) and avoid remapping them via PPS during development.

Capacitive Touch User Interface
The PIC16F1847T-I/SS's integrated mTouch™ CVD peripheral supports up to 12 capacitive touch channels on the 20-SSOP, allowing direct PCB-pad touch buttons, sliders, and proximity sensors with no external analog components. Its 14 KB flash accommodates noise-filtering and debounce algorithms, while the 32 MHz core runs CPS routines in real time. The 20 nA XLP sleep current extends battery life on portable remotes and wearable controls.
Empfohlen
Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node
Operating from 1.8 V to 5.5 V with NanoWatt XLP™ sleep currents as low as 20 nA, the PIC16F1847T-I/SS is engineered for multi-year battery life on single-cell lithium or 2x AA chemistries. The on-chip 32 MHz internal oscillator eliminates the external crystal, cutting BOM cost and quiescent draw. Its 10-bit ADC with 17 channels reads multiple analog sensors while the EUSART/MSSP modules stream data over UART, I²C, or SPI to a host radio.
Empfohlen
Industrial Control Button Panel
The PIC16F1847T-I/SS drives a multi-button operator panel with the mTouch™ keypad scan and two ECCP PWM modules for indicator LED dimming. Its industrial -40 °C to +85 °C range handles factory-floor temperatures, and the 25 mA source/sink per pin directly drives opto-isolated inputs without buffering. The on-chip UART supports RS-485 bridge firmware, while the 10-bit ADC reads panel-mounted analog sensors.
Empfohlen
LED Driver and Lighting Controller
With two ECCP PWM modules producing complementary outputs up to 10-bit resolution, the PIC16F1847T-I/SS drives high-brightness LED strings, RGB color mixers, and dimmable downlights from a single chip. Its 32 MHz core handles DALI, DMX512, or 0-10 V dimming protocols via the EUSART, while its 14 KB flash stores fade curves and color-look-up tables. The internal oscillator reduces BOM cost for high-volume fixtures.
Empfohlen
Home-Automation Bridge Controller
The PIC16F1847T-I/SS acts as a low-cost bridge MCU between capacitive touch keypads, Zigbee/BLE add-on radio modules, and triac-driven mains loads. Its dual MSSP peripherals drive two SPI/I²C slaves simultaneously, while the EUSART handles RS-232 debug logging. The 1 KB RAM buffer is ample for command parsing, and the 14 KB flash fits OTA bootloader plus application code in Zigbee 3.0 gateways.
Empfohlen
Consumer Appliance Replacement for Mechanical Switches
The PIC16F1847T-I/SS replaces electromechanical push-buttons and rotary encoders with sealed capacitive touch interfaces on washing machines, ovens, and small kitchen appliances. Its 20 nA sleep current keeps standby power well under the 0.5 W EU EcoDesign limit, while the 32 MHz core drives both the touch-sensing state machine and the appliance control loop in real time. The 20-SSOP footprint drops directly onto legacy PCB layouts.

Designhinweise
Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin and a 1 µF bulk capacitor on the same supply trace. According to the Microchip PIC16F1847 datasheet section 2, the internal voltage regulator requires both caps to maintain stability across the full 1.8 V to 5.5 V operating range. For battery applications, route VDD through a ferrite bead when connecting to a noisy boost converter output.
For capacitive touch (mTouch™) operation, route touch-pad traces as short, narrow shielded traces with a ground hatch on the layer beneath. The Microchip TB3069 application note recommends a minimum 0.5 mm trace width and 0.2 mm clearance to adjacent ground pours. Avoid running digital signal traces directly over the touch pads - crosstalk from adjacent PWM or UART signals can trigger false touches.
Do not remap ICSPDAT/ICSPCLK (RB7/RB6) using the peripheral pin-select (PPS) module during development - this can lock out the in-circuit serial programmer. According to Microchip TB1267, leave these pins in default GPIO mode until the firmware has been verified on the target hardware. Also note that the on-chip 32 MHz oscillator accuracy is ±1% typical, which is insufficient for UART communication above 115200 baud over temperature - use an external crystal for high-speed UART links.
Estimated: the 20-SSOP package has a theta_JA of approximately 90 °C/W. At maximum CPU activity (32 MHz, all peripherals running) the core dissipation is roughly 8 mA × 3.3 V = 26 mW, giving a junction temperature rise of about 2.3 °C above ambient. This is well within the industrial -40 °C to +85 °C rating, but for closed-enclosure designs above 60 °C ambient, derate to 16 MHz CPU clock or add thermal vias under the exposed pad (not applicable on SSOP-20).
Reserve the MCLR pin (RA6 on 20-SSOP, brought out as a separate function or shared) for in-circuit programming access via a 10 kΩ pull-up to VDD. Keep the ICSP connector within 50 mm of the MCU to avoid signal integrity issues at 32 MHz. For production programming, expose pads on the PCB rather than a header - this reduces BOM cost and improves mechanical robustness, per Microchip TB1232 production-line programming guidance.
