PIC16F84T-10/SO Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC16F84T-10/SO is an 8-bit CMOS FLASH/EEPROM microcontroller from the PIC16F8X family, operating at up to 10 MHz clock speed with 1.75KB (1K x 14) of program memory, 68 bytes of SRAM, and 64 bytes of EEPROM data memory, housed in an 18-pin SOIC (7.50 mm width) package. The 'T' suffix indicates tape-and-reel packaging for high-volume assembly.

A PIC microcontroller (Programmable Intelligent Computer) is a low-cost, high-performance RISC-based 8-bit microcontroller that integrates a CPU, memory, and peripherals on a single chip. PIC16F8X devices are part of Microchip's mid-range PIC16 family, sitting between the baseline PIC10/12/16 family and the high-performance PIC18 family in the broader hierarchy: microcontroller -> embedded MCU -> semiconductor IC.

Key features include 13 I/O pins supporting individual direction control, 8-level deep hardware stack, 35 single-word instructions (most single-cycle except program branches at two cycles), 400 ns instruction cycle at 10 MHz, two 8-bit timers/counters (Timer0, Timer2) plus a 16-bit timer/counter with prescaler (Timer1), and a 10-bit multi-channel ADC. Power-saving nanoWatt technology and a wide 4.0V to 5.5V supply range support both battery and line-powered designs.

The architecture is fully static CMOS with an enhanced RISC core, Harvard bus organization, and on-chip FLASH/EEPROM permitting in-circuit serial programming (ICSP). The 10 MHz clock input delivers a 400 ns instruction cycle, providing deterministic throughput for real-time control loops.

Typical applications include HVAC damper and valve actuator control, general-purpose remote sensors, smart energy and metering endpoints, automotive aftermarket electronics, and appliance user-interface boards. The 18-pin SOIC package is widely supported by hobbyist programmers and pick-and-place equipment.

When designing with this device, reserve one I/O pin for ICSP (typically RB6/RB7 for clock/data), include a 100 nF decoupling capacitor adjacent to VDD, and select a crystal oscillator that meets the 10 MHz maximum with margin for temperature. For new designs, consider the pin-compatible PIC16F84A-04/SO which adds enhanced FLASH and lower-voltage operation.

⚡

Smart Energy Metering Endpoints

The PIC16F84T-10/SO suits low-end smart-meter endpoints that count pulses from a metrology front-end and log usage to EEPROM at fixed intervals. The 64-byte EEPROM retains rolling 15-minute interval data through power-line disturbances, while 1 million erase/write cycles support multi-year deployments. At 5V/10 MHz the core executes pulse counting and CRC-protected logging with margin; sleep mode between pulses preserves battery in gas and water meter retrofits. The wide operating temperature supports outdoor meter enclosures with derating.

📱

Appliance User-Interface Boards

The PIC16F84T-10/SO is a fit for appliance front-panel controllers that scan 4x4 keypads, drive 7-segment or character LCDs, and toggle relay outputs. Its 13 I/O drive up to 8 multiplexed LED digits with row/column scanning at 10 MHz, while the FLASH memory holds look-up tables for icon translation. The 4.0V-5.5V supply aligns with white-goods 5V rails and the SOIC package withstands wave-solder rework. nanoWatt sleep mode wakes on key-press interrupt, supporting Energy Star standby targets.

🚗

Automotive Aftermarket Accessories

The PIC16F84T-10/SO drives aftermarket accessories such as alarm LED flashers, lighting controllers, and HVAC retrofits that do not require AEC-Q100 qualification. Its 13 I/O outputs handle relay drivers via MOSFETs, and the 5V operation aligns with accessory 12V-to-5V regulator outputs. Note that this part is commercial temperature grade (0C to +70C); for under-hood or AEC-Q100 requirements, choose PIC16F84AT-20E/SO (extended temp) or a PIC18 K-series part. ICSP simplifies field firmware updates.

🔧

Educational and Hobbyist Embedded Projects

The PIC16F84T-10/SO has long been the canonical teaching microcontroller for assembly-language courses, hobbyist projects, and low-cost dev boards. Its 35-instruction RISC set is fully documented in the datasheet, IDE support spans MPLAB X and pic-as, and the 18-SOIC package fits standard 0.1-inch-pitch breakout boards. The 1.75 KB FLASH holds complete demos including UART, I2C master, and interrupt-driven keypads, while ICSP on RB6/RB7 enables instant reprogramming via PICkit 3/4. Priced around $3 at qty 1, the part is the lowest-cost entry into Microchip's PIC16 mid-range family.

Designhinweise

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as physically possible to the VDD pin (pin 14) with the ground return via a short trace to VSS (pin 5). For boards with multiple ICs sharing the 5V rail, add a 10 microfarad bulk tantalum or ceramic near the regulator output. Estimated: based on standard PIC16F8X decoupling guidelines, this combination keeps digital switching noise below 50 mVpp on the analog supply rail even at 10 MHz full operation.

Reserve RB6 (pin 12) and RB7 (pin 13) for ICSP clock and data. Do not connect heavy loads (relays, LEDs without current-limit resistors) directly to these pins during development - ICSP communication can be disrupted by capacitive loading above 30 pF. If the application requires these pins as outputs, add a 4.7 kohm series resistor or buffer through a 74HC125 to keep ICSP functional in-circuit.

Keep the crystal or resonator traces between OSC1 (pin 16) and OSC2 (pin 15) short and symmetric, surrounded by a ground pour to minimize radiated EMI. Estimated: trace length under 10 mm and ground guard ring on both sides prevents 30 to 50 MHz harmonics from coupling into adjacent analog traces. For HS-mode operation above 4 MHz, add a 1 Mohm feedback resistor across OSC1/OSC2 to bias the internal inverter into its linear region.

The PIC16F84T-10/SO uses the original (pre-A) silicon revision. Configuration bits differ from PIC16F84A: the original F84 has CP (code protect) bit ordering that must be set correctly or the device appears bricked after programming. Per Microchip datasheet 30430D, always read back configuration words after programming and verify the oscillator mode (HS vs XT vs LP) matches the installed crystal. The original F84 also lacks the F84A's 2.0V minimum VDD - operation below 4.0V is not guaranteed.
