PIC16F876T-10E/SO Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC16F876T-10E/SO is an 8-bit CMOS Flash-based microcontroller from the PIC16F family, delivering 10 MIPS performance (200 ns instruction execution) in a 28-pin SOIC wide-body package. It integrates 14 KB of Flash program memory (8K x 14 words), 368 bytes of RAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM data memory, with a 10 MHz maximum operating clock speed and a 2.0V to 5.5V wide operating voltage range. The part is rated for the extended industrial temperature range (-40C to +125C), as indicated by the "E" designator.

A PIC microcontroller (Programmable Interface Controller) is a Harvard-architecture RISC processor family designed by Microchip Technology. The PIC16F series occupies the mid-range of the PIC16 family, offering more peripherals and memory than baseline PIC12/PIC14 parts while remaining easy to program with only 35 single-word instructions. PIC MCUs sit in the broader hierarchy of embedded microcontrollers, alongside AVR, 8051, and ARM Cortex-M0 devices, and are widely used for low-cost, deterministic real-time control in industrial and consumer applications.

Key features of the PIC16F876T-10E/SO include five 10-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) channels, two 8-bit and one 16-bit timers, a Universal Synchronous/Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (USART), a Master Synchronous Serial Port (MSSP) supporting both SPI and I2C, a Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) module, and a watchdog timer with its own on-chip RC oscillator. The on-chip In-Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) interface and In-Circuit Debugger (ICD) support simplify firmware development and field upgrades.

Architecturally, the PIC16F876 uses a 14-bit instruction word with an 8-bit data path, a 2-stage pipeline, and separate program and data buses (Harvard architecture). This design provides deterministic instruction timing and efficient code density for control loops, while the 10 MHz oscillator combined with the 4-clock-per-instruction cycle yields 10 MIPS throughput.

Typical applications include industrial automation controllers, sensor interface modules, automotive body electronics (non-safety), HVAC control boards, consumer appliance interfaces, and battery-powered measurement instruments. The wide SOIC-28 footprint supports both hand-soldering for prototypes and high-volume reflow assembly, making it suitable for designs migrating from the older PIC16F84 series to a more capable peripheral set.

When designing with this part, plan for a 10 MHz maximum external clock (the "-10" speed suffix); choose the -20 variant if higher throughput is needed. The "E" temperature grade extends the operating range to +125C, suitable for industrial enclosures but not for AEC-Q100 automotive qualification - consider the PIC16F876A-I/SO for automotive projects. Always include proper decoupling (100 nF plus bulk capacitor) close to VDD/AVDD pins.

This page synthesizes Microchip PIC16F876 datasheet values, current distributor pricing and stock, drop-in alternative MPNs, and practical design notes that go beyond the manufacturer datasheet itself.

Designhinweise

Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin (pin 20) with traces less than 5 mm. Add a 10 uF bulk capacitor on the board's main supply rail. For ADC accuracy, place a separate 100 nF capacitor close to AVSS (if available) and route analog and digital grounds to a single point near the IC. Brown-Out Reset (BOR) should be enabled in the configuration fuses to avoid unpredictable startup below the 2.0 V minimum.

Do not exceed the absolute maximum VDD of 7.5 V (or higher transient ratings). The MCLR pin (pin 1) requires a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD; if not driven by a separate supervisor, do not leave it floating. The PIC16F876 is the original silicon; for new designs the PIC16F876A revision is recommended because of improved ADC, better flash endurance, and a more flexible internal oscillator. Code compiled for the PIC16F876 may need minor adjustments when migrating to PIC16F876A.

Route the 10 MHz oscillator traces (OSC1/OSC2) as short as possible and keep them away from high-current switching traces. If using a crystal, place the load capacitors (typically 15-33 pF) within 5 mm of the OSC pins. For ICSP, dedicate pins RB6 (PGC) and RB7 (PGD) and add a 2x3 or 1x6 header on the PCB for in-circuit debugging; this avoids removing the MCU for programming. Estimated: a 2-layer FR-4 board with proper ground pour below the MCU keeps EMI low for industrial EN 55022 class B compliance.
