PIC16LC554T-04E/SS Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC16LC554T-04E/SS is an 8-bit RISC microcontroller from the PIC16C5X family, featuring 4 MHz maximum clock speed, 896 bytes of OTP program memory (512 x 14 words), and 80 bytes of data RAM, housed in a 20-pin SSOP package with tape-and-reel packaging. It operates from a supply voltage range of 3.0 V to 6.25 V (3.3 V/5 V typical) and exposes 12 to 13 I/O pins for general-purpose digital interfacing. The 'T' suffix denotes tape-and-reel delivery, the '-04' designates the 4 MHz speed grade, and the 'E' suffix indicates an enhanced or specific revision silicon step.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, memory (ROM/RAM), and peripherals on one die. The PIC16C5X family uses Microchip's original 12-bit instruction word RISC architecture, designed for low-cost, deterministic embedded control. Within the broader taxonomy, an 8-bit MCU belongs to the microcontroller family, itself a subcategory of microprocessors and semiconductors. Compared with 16-bit and 32-bit MCUs, 8-bit parts trade raw computational throughput for simplicity, predictable interrupt latency, and very low cost-per-pin, making them ideal for high-volume appliance, industrial, and automotive sub-system designs.

Key features of the PIC16LC554 include 4 MHz operation, 896 bytes (512 x 14) of One-Time-Programmable (OTP) program memory, 80 bytes of RAM, 13 I/O pins, and the special-function peripherals characteristic of the PIC16C5X family: Power-on Reset (POR), Power-up Timer (PWRT), Oscillator Start-up Timer (OST), and a Watchdog Timer (WDT). The architecture uses a 12-bit instruction word with single-cycle execution on most instructions except branches, providing deterministic timing for control loops.

The device is fabricated on a CMOS process optimized for low power dissipation and wide supply tolerance. Its RISC core executes 33 single-word instructions and supports 8-bit data paths with a hardware accumulator and a multi-source interrupt structure. Program memory is OTP, meaning each device is programmed once at production time and cannot be field-updated; designers use windowed or UV-erasable CERDIP samples for prototype development.

Typical applications include white-goods and appliance control, automotive body electronics, sensor signal conditioning, low-end user-interface panels, battery chargers, and simple closed-loop motor or valve controllers. The 20-SSOP footprint and 13 I/O make it well suited to compact through-hole-replacement designs migrating from older 16C54/16C55 generations.

Designers should note that OTP program memory cannot be reprogrammed in-circuit; for prototyping, use the JW (windowed CERDIP) variant. The 4 MHz clock ceiling limits instruction throughput to approximately 1 MIPS, so reserve this MCU for control tasks rather than DSP or high-bandwidth communication. Ensure the chosen oscillator mode (RC, XT, LP, HS) matches the resonator and load capacitance specified in the datasheet electrical characteristics table.

Designhinweise

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin (pin 20 or 14) and a bulk 10 uF tantalum or aluminum electrolytic capacitor on the same supply rail. The PIC16LC554T-04E/SS can source/sink 20 mA per pin and up to 200 mA total across VDD/VSS; total power dissipation must be kept below 800 mW to avoid latch-up. For battery-powered applications, use the internal WDT and SLEEP mode to drop quiescent current below 1 uA.

Choose the oscillator mode (LP, XT, HS, RC) that matches the resonator per the datasheet's C1/C2 load-capacitance table. For 4 MHz XT operation with a standard quartz crystal, use 22 to 33 pF load capacitors on OSC1 (pin 16) and OSC2 (pin 15). RC mode is acceptable for cost-sensitive designs but tolerates only +/- 5 to 10 percent frequency drift over temperature; HS mode is required for clock frequencies above 4 MHz and is not supported on the -04 speed grade.

The PIC16LC554T-04E/SS is OTP (One-Time Programmable) and cannot be erased or reprogrammed in-circuit. For prototyping and field-debug work, order the JW windowed CERDIP variant of the PIC16C554 and erase it under UV light. Production units programmed in OTP must have their CONFIG fuses (watchdog enable, oscillator mode, code protect) blown in the same programming step; re-programming after code-protect is set is impossible by design.

The 20-SSOP package has a pin pitch of 0.65 mm and a body width of 5.30 mm; ensure the PCB land pattern matches the SSOP-20 (JEDEC MO-150 standard) footprint exactly. Allow at least 5 mm of copper pour under and around the device for thermal spreading. Avoid routing high-speed signals (UART, SPI, PWM) directly under the SSOP body to minimize capacitive coupling into the oscillator traces; keep oscillator traces short and guard them with a ground ring.

The PIC16LC554T-04E/SS has TTL-compatible digital inputs with VIH >= 2.0 V and VIL <= 0.8 V at 5 V supply. For mixed 3.3 V/5 V designs, place a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD on open-drain signals crossing between domains. The MCLR pin (pin 4) must have a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD and a 100 nF capacitor to VSS to filter noise; if MCLR is left floating the device can spuriously reset or fail to start on brown-out conditions.
