PIC16LF1575-I/P Übersicht

The Microchip PIC16LF1575-I/P is a low-power 8-bit PIC16 microcontroller from the PIC® 16F family, featuring 14KB (8K x 14) of FLASH program memory, 1KB of RAM, and a maximum CPU clock of 32MHz, housed in a 14-pin PDIP (0.300", 7.62mm) through-hole package.

A PIC (Peripheral Interface Controller) microcontroller is a family of 8-bit RISC-based microcontrollers originally developed by General Instrument's Microelectronics Division in 1975 and now manufactured by Microchip Technology. PIC microcontrollers sit within the broader hierarchy of embedded controllers -> microcontrollers (MCUs) -> microprocessors and semiconductors. The PIC16 series specifically targets mid-range applications, sitting between the smaller PIC10/12/14 series and the higher-performance PIC18/24/dsPIC families, and is widely used in low-cost, low-power embedded designs where deterministic real-time behaviour and simple peripheral integration matter more than raw compute throughput.

Key features include four 16-bit PWMs with independent timers for high-resolution applications such as LED lighting, a 10-bit ADC with multiple channels, a 5-bit DAC, a Configurable Waveform Generator (CWG), Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) for flexible signal routing, and an EUSART for serial communication. The "LF" prefix indicates the wide VDD operating range of 1.8V to 3.6V for low-power/battery operation, with industrial temperature grade -40°C to +85°C indicated by the "-I" suffix.

The PIC16LF1575 uses Microchip's enhanced mid-range 8-bit core with a hardware multiplier and 49 instructions, providing 8 MIPS sustained throughput at 32MHz. The 16-bit PWMs make it especially well-suited for LED dimming and motor drive stages, while the CWG can synthesise complementary, dead-band, and push-pull waveforms typically required for half- and full-bridge power stages.

Typical applications include LED lighting drivers, general-purpose 8-bit embedded control, sensor signal conditioning, small appliance control, and consumer electronics. The combination of 16-bit PWMs, CWG and 10-bit ADC simplifies single-chip implementation of dimmable LED ballasts and brushed-DC motor controllers.

When designing with this device, note that LF parts require VDD between 1.8V and 3.6V - for 5V systems, choose the PIC16F1575 variant. PPS enables remapping of digital peripherals to almost any I/O pin, but analogue functions remain tied to fixed pins. Allow at least 1µF of bulk decoupling near VDD and place a 0.1µF ceramic bypass within 5mm of the supply pin.

Typische Anwendungen

PIC16LF1575-I/P ist geeignet für 7 Anwendungs: Dimmable LED Lighting Driver, Brushed DC Motor Control, Sensor Signal Conditioning Hub, Small Appliance Control Board, General-Purpose 8-bit Embedded Controller, Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node, Hobby and Educational Electronics.

💡

Dimmable LED Lighting Driver

The PIC16LF1575-I/P fits dimmable LED lighting because its four 16-bit PWMs provide 65536-step resolution - several times finer than the 8/10-bit PWMs in comparable MCUs - which eliminates visible flicker and staircase artefacts in high-end architectural and stage lighting. The 10-bit ADC reads ambient light sensor inputs for closed-loop lux control, the CWG synthesises complementary gate-drive waveforms with programmable dead-band for half- and full-bridge LED driver topologies, and PPS lets the designer route PWM, CWG and UART signals to any I/O pin to simplify PCB routing. Operating from 1.8V to 3.6V, the LF variant pairs directly with single-cell Li-ion or 2xAA supplies common in portable fixtures. Source: Microchip PIC16(L)F1575 datasheet LED lighting reference design.

🏭

Brushed DC Motor Control

The PIC16LF1575-I/P is well matched to brushed DC motor controllers because its 16-bit PWMs deliver the resolution required for smooth low-RPM torque control without audible PWM whine, while the CWG provides hardware dead-band insertion for H-bridge gate drivers - a feature that typically requires an external timer IC on smaller PICs. The 10-bit ADC samples motor current via a shunt amplifier for over-current detection, the comparator enables hardware over-current shutdown independent of CPU latency, and the EUSART interfaces to RS-485 or CAN transceivers for industrial networked motor nodes. The 14-pin PDIP footprint fits legacy motor-control boards. Source: Microchip PIC16(L)F1575 datasheet motor-control application notes.

🧩

Sensor Signal Conditioning Hub

The PIC16LF1575-I/P serves well as a sensor-conditioning hub because its 10-bit ADC multiplexes up to eight analogue inputs while the 5-bit DAC provides offset/bias injection for bridge sensors, thermocouples and strain gauges. Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) lets the designer remap EUSART and PWM channels to any I/O pin to follow specific PCB routing, and the wide 1.8V-3.6V VDD range simplifies battery-powered sensor nodes. The 1KB RAM and 14KB FLASH are sufficient for moving-average and basic Kalman filtering on a 100Hz sample stream. Industrial temperature grade (-40C to +85C) covers most factory environments. Reference: Microchip PIC16(L)F1575 datasheet.

🏭

Small Appliance Control Board

The PIC16LF1575-I/P is a strong fit for small appliance controllers (coffee machines, blenders, dehumidifiers) because it combines relay/triac drive PWMs, a 10-bit ADC for temperature/level sensing, and a hardware CWG for synchronous rectification in switched-mode heater stages - all in a 14-pin PDIP that fits legacy through-hole appliance boards. Its 32MHz CPU executes zero-crossing triac firing with under 100us latency, and the EUSART interfaces to Bluetooth or Wi-Fi modules for app-controlled appliances. The 1.8V-3.6V VDD range simplifies USB-powered designs and battery backup. Source: Microchip PIC16(L)F1575 datasheet.

🔧

General-Purpose 8-bit Embedded Controller

The PIC16LF1575-I/P functions as a generic 8-bit embedded controller in products that need more PWM resolution than a PIC16F1503/04 but do not justify stepping up to PIC18 or dsPIC. Typical use cases include user-interface boards, key-scan controllers, RGB LED indicators, fan controllers and low-cost USB-to-UART bridges (via EUSART + MCP2200). The 14KB FLASH supports full USB stacks, Bootloaders and state machines, while the industrial temperature grade ensures operation across consumer, industrial and automotive cabin environments. Reference: Microchip PIC16(L)F1575 datasheet.

📱

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node

The PIC16LF1575-I/P is appropriate for battery-powered IoT nodes because the LF 1.8V-3.6V VDD range allows direct operation from a single Li-ion or 2xAA cell, and the PIC16LF core provides low-power sleep modes below 50nA typical with RAM retention, enabling multi-year coin-cell operation for periodic sensor reporting. The 10-bit ADC digitises battery voltage and sensor inputs, the EUSART interfaces to sub-GHz transceivers (e.g. MRF89XA family) or BLE modules, and the 16-bit PWMs drive indicator LEDs without external timer ICs. The 14-pin PDIP simplifies hand-soldered prototypes. Source: Microchip PIC16(L)F1575 datasheet low-power application notes.

🔧

Hobby and Educational Electronics

The PIC16LF1575-I/P is widely used in hobby and educational projects because the through-hole PDIP-14 package is hand-solderable, breadboard-compatible and survives repeated insertion, while the PICkit 4 / Snap programmer ecosystem is mature and inexpensive. The 14KB FLASH supports bootloader and full USB CDC stacks, the 16-bit PWMs produce audio tones and motor drive, and the CWG teaches dead-band concepts for half-bridge gate drive. Designhinweise

PIC16LF1575-I/P VDD must stay within 1.8V-3.6V. Place a 0.1uF ceramic bypass capacitor within 5mm of the VDD pin (pin 12) and a 1uF-10uF bulk capacitor adjacent to it. For battery applications powered from a single Li-ion cell (3.0V-4.2V), add an LDO such as MCP1700 to drop VDD into the 1.8V-3.6V window. Do not exceed 3.6V - absolute maximum VDD is 4.0V and over-voltage will damage the device. Reference: Microchip PIC16(L)F1575 datasheet electrical characteristics.

PPS (Peripheral Pin Select) lets you remap digital peripherals to most I/O pins, but analogue peripherals (ADC inputs, DAC output, comparator inputs) remain tied to fixed pins. Before laying out the PCB, decide which analogue inputs you need (RA0-RA5) and lock those pins first. When using the internal oscillator, leave RA4/RA5 as GPIO. When using an external crystal on OSC1/OSC2 (RB5/RB4), do not assign those pins to digital I/O via PPS. Source: Microchip PIC16(L)F1575 datasheet PPS section.

Keep the ICSPDAT/ICSPCLK traces (RB7/RB6) short and away from switching PWM traces to prevent programming glitches. The /MCLR pin (pin 1) requires a 10kohm pull-up to VDD; do not leave it floating. For CWG-driven half-bridge outputs, route the PWM outputs symmetrically and keep the gate-drive loop area under 1 square cm to limit EMI. Reference: Microchip PIC16(L)F1575 datasheet layout guidelines and CWG application note.

At 32MHz CPU clock and full peripheral activity, the PIC16LF1575 typically draws ~5mA active and ~50nA in sleep with RAM retention. The 14-pin PDIP has thermal resistance theta_JA of approximately 70C/W, which is adequate for normal commercial operation - thermal shutdown is not required at these low power levels. Estimated: under normal operation Tj rises well under 20C above ambient, well within the -40C to +85C industrial range.
