PIC16LF1704-E/ST Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF1704-E/ST is a low-power 8-bit PIC microcontroller from the PIC® XLP™ 16F family, featuring 7KB (4K x 14 words) of Flash program memory, 512 bytes of RAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM, housed in a 14-pin TSSOP package with a maximum CPU clock of 32MHz. It operates from a 1.8V to 3.6V supply (LF variant) and integrates a rich set of analog and digital peripherals including a 10-bit ADC, an 8-bit DAC, two operational amplifiers (op amps), a high-speed comparator, a zero-cross detect (ZCD), configurable logic cells (CLC), PWM/CCP, and EUSART plus I2C/SPI serial interfaces.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, program memory (Flash/ROM), data memory (RAM), I/O ports, and peripherals on one die. Within the broader semiconductor taxonomy, the PIC16LF1704 sits in the hierarchy: microcontroller -> embedded processor -> digital IC -> semiconductor. The "LF" suffix denotes the low-voltage (1.8-3.6V) variant of the PIC16F1704 family, optimized for battery-powered and energy-harvesting applications where the XLP™ (eXtreme Low Power) technology delivers nanoWatt sleep currents below 50 nA typical.

Key features include four 10-bit PWM channels, two op-amps with internal routing, two high-speed comparators, a 10-bit ADC with up to 8 channels, an 8-bit DAC, and Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) for flexible I/O mapping. The integrated op amps and DAC eliminate the need for external analog ICs in many signal-chain designs, reducing BOM cost and PCB area. PPS allows peripheral signals (UART, SPI, PWM) to be remapped to nearly any digital I/O pin, simplifying PCB layout and package migration.

The architecture is a RISC-based enhanced mid-range core with a hardware multiplier, 49 instructions, and a two-deep hardware stack for subroutine nesting. The 32MHz internal oscillator (±1% calibrated) eliminates the need for an external crystal in most applications, saving two PCB components and reducing BOM cost. XLP technology with multiple idle/sleep modes, watchdog timer, and ultra-low-power RTC enables years of operation on a single coin cell.

Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, battery-powered wireless transmitters, LED lighting controllers, small appliance control, portable medical devices, and consumer electronics. The wide 1.8-3.6V range supports direct connection to single-cell Li-ion or two-alkaline-cell battery stacks. The integrated op amps and DAC make it well-suited for closed-loop control of sensors, motor drivers, and lighting.

When designing with the PIC16LF1704, plan for programming/debug via the ICSP™ (In-Circuit Serial Programming) interface on pins ICSPCLK/ICSPDAT. A 100nF decoupling capacitor must be placed within 5mm of VDD, and the unused I/O pins should be configured as outputs low to minimize power. The PPS feature must be initialized in firmware before the affected peripherals are enabled.

Designhinweise

Place a 100nF decoupling capacitor within 5mm of VDD (pin 14) and a bulk capacitor of at least 1uF on the same rail. According to Microchip datasheet 40001715D, the LF variant draws up to 4.5mA at 32MHz in active mode and <50nA in sleep. For battery-powered designs, switch to the 31 kHz LFINTOSC before issuing the SLEEP instruction to achieve the lowest sleep current. Estimated: average power for a 0.1% active duty cycle is approximately 5 uA at 3V.

Route the ICSP signals (ICSPCLK on pin 11, ICSPDAT on pin 1) as short, direct traces to a programming header. Per Microchip programming specification DS30009632, ICSP lines should not be shared with high-current switching signals or be loaded with capacitance exceeding 30 pF to avoid programming failures. The MCLR/VPP pin (pin 3) requires a pull-up to VDD; do not leave it floating.

Initialize Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) in firmware before enabling the associated peripheral; otherwise the peripheral will not function even if its control registers appear correctly configured. Per Microchip datasheet 40001715D, PPS unlocking requires the sequence PPSLOCK = 0x55, PPSLOCK = 0xAA, then clearing PPSLOCK. The CONFIG words must be set correctly for code protection and oscillator selection; using the wrong CONFIG1 can brick the device until a high-voltage programmer recovers it.

The op-amp inputs have a common-mode range that depends on the configuration; ensure that input signals stay within the op-amp input range specified in the datasheet. Per Microchip datasheet 40001715D, the on-chip op amps are rail-to-rail output but have a limited input common-mode range of 0.3V to VDD-0.6V. Place bypass capacitors near any sensitive analog input traces, and consider a unity-gain buffer if driving long cables.
