PIC16LF1776-E/SS Übersicht

The Microchip PIC16LF1776-E/SS is an 8-bit PIC® XLP™ flash microcontroller running at up to 32 MHz with 14 KB (8K x 14 words) of program Flash, 1 KB of RAM, and a rich set of on-chip intelligent analog and digital peripherals, all integrated in a 28-pin SSOP package. Its low-power "LF" core variant supports operation down to 1.8 V, making it suited to battery-powered and energy-harvesting designs.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that combines a CPU, non-volatile program memory (Flash/ROM), volatile working memory (RAM), and a wide range of peripherals (ADCs, timers, communication blocks) on one die. The PIC16LF1776 belongs to the broader category of 8-bit microcontrollers -> microcontrollers -> embedded processors -> semiconductors, and is positioned by Microchip within the PIC16F1xxx enhanced mid-range family for mixed-signal embedded designs.

Key differentiating features include three independent 10-bit DACs and three 5-bit DACs, a 17-channel 10-bit ADC, four 16-bit timers with PWM, two comparators, a 32-bit CRC engine, and the high-performance 16F core with a hardware multiplier. The XLP™ (eXtreme Low Power) sleep current of typically < 50 nA enables years of operation from a single coin cell in duty-cycled applications.

Architecturally the PIC16LF1776 uses Microchip's enhanced mid-range 8-bit RISC core with a hardware multiply, a 14-bit instruction word, and a 16-level hardware stack. The 28-pin SSOP package exposes 25 I/O pins, two I2C/SPI, two UART, and supports up to four PWM channels with complementary or dead-band modes for half-bridge motor drive and lighting control.

Typical applications include LED lighting controllers, switch-mode power supply (SMPS) digital control loops, BLDC and stepper motor drive, battery chargers, sensor signal conditioning, and general-purpose industrial or IoT edge devices. The wide ADC/DAC count lets it replace a number of external analog components in mixed-signal designs.

When designing with the part, ensure the supply stays within 1.8 V-3.6 V for the LF variant, place a 0.1 µF decoupling capacitor close to VDD, and reserve an ICSP™ header for in-circuit programming. Watch the absolute maximum ratings; VDD must not exceed 4.0 V even transiently or the internal Flash row-erase endurance can be permanently impacted.

💡

LED Lighting Controllers

The PIC16LF1776-E/SS fits LED lighting controllers because it combines four 16-bit timers with up to four complementary PWM outputs, three 10-bit DACs for tunable-white channel trim, and the XLP™ < 50 nA sleep current required for standby power compliance. Per the Microchip datasheet DS40001779, the 32 MHz CPU core can run a single CIE-1931 dimming curve plus DMX-512 or 0-10 V input processing without offloading to a host processor. The on-chip 17-channel 10-bit ADC simultaneously reads temperature, supply voltage, and light-sensor feedback for closed-loop lumen maintenance. The wide 1.8 V-3.6 V LF supply range lets a single design accept both 3.3 V and battery-backed emergency-mode rails. Recommended companions: PIC16LF1769-E/SS for cost-down variants, and DMX-512 to UART front-ends from the 1-Series PIC16 family.

⚡

Switch-Mode Power Supply (SMPS) Digital Control

The PIC16LF1776-E/SS is well-suited to SMPS digital control loops because it integrates high-resolution PWM timers (250 ps resolution with the 16-bit PWM module), three 10-bit DACs for reference generation, and two comparators that can be used as primary-side current-sense inputs or for slope compensation. Per Microchip application notes, the on-chip op-amps can build the type-II or type-III compensator network around a single MCU, removing the external analog controller IC. The 32 MHz CPU with hardware multiplier executes average-current-mode and constant-on-time control loops comfortably at 100 kHz switching frequency with 8-bit settling. The 17-channel 10-bit ADC monitors input/output voltage, current, and temperature for OVP/OCP/OTP. Recommended companions: PIC16LF1768-E/SS for lower-cost PFC controllers, and PIC16F1765 for higher-voltage F-variant designs.

🏭

BLDC and Stepper Motor Drive

The PIC16LF1776-E/SS fits BLDC and stepper motor drive because four 16-bit timers expose complementary PWM pairs with programmable dead-band, while three 10-bit DACs can drive the reference inputs of external gate drivers for sinusoidal commutation. Per Microchip datasheet DS40001779, the 32 MHz core runs sensorless back-EMF zero-cross detection at 30 krpm without CPU stall, and the 17-channel ADC reads three-phase current, BEMF, and DC-bus voltage simultaneously in scan mode. The 25 I/O pins are sufficient for Hall/encoder inputs, fault lines, and a UART service port. The XLP™ sleep mode drops quiescent current to < 50 nA between motion commands, ideal for battery-driven robotics. Recommended companions: gate-driver pre-drivers in the MCP1x family and PIC16LF1769-E/SS for simplified 6-step commutation.

🔋

Battery Chargers and Fuel Gauge

The PIC16LF1776-E/SS is a strong fit for battery chargers and fuel-gauge subsystems because the 17-channel 10-bit ADC supports simultaneous current-sense, voltage-sense, and NTC temperature-sense acquisitions needed for CC/CV charge termination algorithms, while the 32-bit hardware CRC engine protects the gas-gauging table against Flash bit errors. Per Microchip datasheet DS40001779, the LF supply range of 1.8 V-3.6 V lets the MCU share the cell stack directly without an LDO. The 10-bit DACs can be repurposed as programmable current-set references for constant-current loops. The 1 KB RAM holds a coulomb-count table and I2C/SPI interfaces connect to an external monitor or BLE SoC. Recommended companions: PIC16LF1708-E/SS for ultra-low-power chargers, and PIC16LF1579-E/SS for cost-down chargers.

🧩

Sensor Signal Conditioning and IoT Edge Nodes

The PIC16LF1776-E/SS fits IoT sensor-conditioning edge nodes because the 17-channel 10-bit ADC plus on-chip op-amps form a complete analog front-end for thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges, and 4-20 mA loops in a single IC, eliminating dedicated analog signal-chain components. Per Microchip datasheet DS40001779, the two comparators can wake the CPU from sleep on threshold crossings, leaving the XLP™ < 50 nA sleep current available between samples - critical for multi-year coin-cell operation. The 2 UARTs run RS-485 Modbus at 250 kbps, the 2 I2C buses drive external sensors, and the 32 MHz core can host an MQTT-SN or LoRaWAN® MAC locally for gateway-less nodes. Recommended companions: PIC16LF1507-E/SS for low-cost environmental sensors, and PIC16LF1619-I/SS for low-power Cortex class.

🌐

Industrial Control and HMI Sub-Systems

The PIC16LF1776-E/SS is well-suited to industrial control and small HMI sub-systems because the 25 I/O pins handle key-matrix scan, rotary encoder input, and a UART link to a host PLC or display, while the 17-channel 10-bit ADC reads potentiometer wipers and analog feedback. Per Microchip datasheet DS40001779, the 32 MHz CPU executes deterministic firmware with 4-cycle interrupt latency, satisfying IEC 61131-3 timing budgets for sub-1 ms loop closure. The -40 °C to +125 °C operating temperature range (E = extended grade) and integrated 32-bit CRC engine deliver the reliability required for industrial enclosures. The 10-bit DACs can drive 4-20 mA loop references via an external XTR105, enabling PLC card functionality on a single die. Recommended companions: PIC16LF1769-E/SS for keypad-only HMIs, and PIC16LF1618-I/SO for low-cost UART-only nodes.

Place a 0.1 µF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD pin (pins 7 and 18 on the SSOP-28) and a 10 µF bulk capacitor on the main supply rail. The PIC16LF1776-E/SS LF variant runs down to 1.8 V; ensure the upstream LDO or DC-DC converter maintains < 50 mV ripple at full CPU load to prevent brown-out resets at 32 MHz operation. Tie MCLR through a 10 kΩ pull-up to VDD and add a 100 nF cap to ground if the reset line is exposed to ESD events.

On the 28-SSOP footprint, route analog traces (AN0-AN17, DAC, op-amp pins) with a ground guard on both sides to keep digital switching noise below the 10-bit ADC ENOB (~10 effective bits). Keep the analog AVDD bond (when tied to VDD) and AVSS bond (when tied to VSS) short - the LF variant shares AVDD with VDD but still benefits from a ferrite bead + 10 µF cap filter if the board has switching converters nearby. Per Microchip datasheet DS40001779, use 4-layer stack-up with a continuous ground plane under the SSOP.

Do not operate the PIC16LF1776-E/SS below 1.8 V - the LF variant will trigger BOR and corrupt Flash writes; switch to the F variant (PIC16F1776-E/SS, 2.3 V-5.5 V) for designs running at 2.0 V nominal. Reserve the ICSP™ pins (RB6/ICSPCLK and RB7/ICSPDAT) - they must not be strapped to ground or VDD at reset or in-circuit programming will fail. When migrating from PIC16F1769, note that the PIC16LF1776 has 3× the DAC count and an additional 5 ADC channels; existing firmware may need re-balancing for the wider analog front-end.
