PIC16LF1783-I/SP Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF1783-I/SP is a low-power 8-bit PIC microcontroller from the PIC® XLP™ 16F family, featuring 7 KB (4K x 14 words) of flash program memory, 512 bytes of RAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM, housed in a 28-pin SPDIP (Skinny Plastic DIP) through-hole package.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, program memory (flash), data memory (RAM), non-volatile storage (EEPROM), and peripherals onto one die. Within the broader microcontroller taxonomy, the PIC16LF1783 belongs to the PIC16 enhanced mid-range family, which sits under Microchip's PIC® XLP™ (eXtreme Low Power) product line. XLP technology targets battery-powered and energy-harvesting applications by minimizing active and sleep currents, allowing the MCU to operate directly from a 1.8 V supply rail.

The PIC16LF1783-I/SP runs at speeds up to 32 MHz, executing most instructions in a single 125 ns cycle, and integrates high-performance analog peripherals uncommon in this class - notably a 12-bit ADC (analog-to-digital converter) with up to 14 channels and an 8-bit DAC (digital-to-analog converter). It also includes a 10-bit DAC, operational amplifiers, comparators, PWM modules, and the standard enhanced mid-range core peripherals. The 'LF' prefix denotes the low-voltage (1.8 V to 3.6 V) variant, while the 'I' suffix designates the industrial temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C. The 'SP' package code marks the 28-pin SPDIP.

Typical applications include portable instrumentation, sensor signal conditioning, LED lighting controllers, low-power IoT nodes, and consumer devices. The integrated 12-bit ADC and on-chip op-amps reduce bill-of-materials cost for transducer front-ends, while the XLP active/sleep current profile supports years of battery life on coin cells.

When designing with this part, allocate careful PCB routing for the analog signals (AVDD/AVSS separation) and use decoupling capacitors within 5 mm of each supply pin. Verify in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) connections follow Microchip's recommended layout, since the through-hole SPDIP package is often chosen for prototype and educational development boards where repeated reprogramming is expected.

Wichtigste Unterscheidungsmerkmale

  • 12-bit ADC with on-chip op-amps (vs. PIC16LF1782-I/SP)
  • Dual DAC outputs (8-bit + 10-bit) (vs. PIC16F1718-I/SP)
  • Low-voltage 1.8 V operation for XLP designs (vs. PIC16F1783-I/SP)

Designhinweise

Decouple AVDD and VDD separately with 100 nF ceramic capacitors placed within 5 mm of the respective pins. Tie AVDD to VDD through a ferrite bead if the analog section experiences switching noise. For the lowest XLP sleep current, configure unused I/O as outputs driving low and disable unused peripherals via the PMD (Peripheral Module Disable) registers. Per Microchip's XLP family datasheet, typical sleep current with WDT off is below 100 nA at 3 V / 25 °C.

Route the analog signals (ANx, VREF+, VREF-) away from digital switching traces such as PWM outputs and oscillator pins. Provide a ground plane under the MCU and keep the crystal (if used) close to OSC1/OSC2 with short traces and a grounded guard ring. For ICSP, dedicate RB6/ICSPCLK and RB7/ICSPDAT to programming even in production boards, with a 4.7 kΩ pull-up on MCLR to VDD for clean in-circuit programming.

Do not assume the LF variant will run at 5 V - the PIC16LF1783-I/SP's absolute maximum VDD is 4.0 V and operation is specified 1.8 V-3.6 V. Exceeding this will damage the part. Also, the LF prefix does NOT mean the device is electrically identical to the 'F' variant - the LF has different brown-out and POR thresholds tuned for low-voltage operation. Always recompile firmware for the LF target in MPLAB X to ensure correct configuration bit values are programmed.

Estimated: at 32 MHz CPU clock, typical core supply current is 4 mA at 3.3 V (~13 mW). The 28-SPDIP package has θJA around 70 °C/W in still air, so junction temperature rise is well under 1 °C - no thermal management is required. Power dissipation scales with peripheral activity; when using PWM at high duty cycles on multiple outputs, verify the absolute maximum current ratings on each I/O pin (25 mA source/sink per pin, 200 mA total for the part) are not exceeded.
