PIC16LF722-I/SO Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF722-I/SO is an 8-bit PIC16F-series flash microcontroller built on nanoWatt eXtreme Low Power (XLP) technology, delivering 20 MIPS performance at 20 MHz from a 3.5 KB (2K x 14) program Flash memory and 128 bytes of RAM in a 28-pin SOIC (7.50 mm) package. Operating from 1.8 V to 3.6 V with 25 I/O pins, the device integrates a 16-level hardware stack, internal 16 MHz oscillator, brown-out reset, power-on reset, watchdog timer, PWM, and capture/compare peripherals alongside I2C, SPI, and USART connectivity.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, non-volatile program memory, working RAM, and configurable peripherals on one die. PIC16F-series devices occupy the mid-range position in Microchip's 8-bit portfolio between baseline PIC10/PIC12 parts and the enhanced PIC18 family, and they are widely deployed in ultra-low-power battery products, sensor interfaces, and human-interface subsystems. The LF prefix denotes the wide-Vdd, low-power silicon, while XLP technology cuts sleep current into the nanoamp range.

Key differentiating features of the PIC16LF722 include 1.8 V to 3.6 V operation, a typical sleep current below 50 nA with RTC active, four 8-bit timer/counters, a 10-bit ADC up to 8 channels, a Master Synchronous Serial Port supporting SPI and I2C, and an Enhanced Universal Synchronous Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (EUSART). The Harvard RISC architecture executes most instructions in one instruction cycle, giving 20 MIPS throughput at the 20 MHz oscillator.

Typical applications span battery-powered IoT sensor nodes, low-end remote controls, white-goods user-interface boards, and consumer accessories that need a low-pin-count, low-Vdd MCU with on-chip Flash and a 28-SOIC footprint for hand-solderable prototypes. The wide supply range also makes the part useful as a co-processor for power-management or housekeeping tasks in larger embedded designs.

When designing, route the ICSP clock and data lines (RB6/RA5 and RB7/RA4 by convention) to an in-circuit programming header for field upgrades, and keep the MCLR pull-up close to the device. The 28-SOIC package simplifies hand prototyping compared with QFP variants and is generally priced lower per unit at the 100-piece break.

Typische Anwendungen

PIC16LF722-I/SO ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node, Remote Control and Consumer HMI, White Goods User Interface Board, Automotive Interior Auxiliary Module, Medical Home-Care Monitoring, Industrial Sensor / Building Automation Transducer.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node

The PIC16LF722-I/SO is well matched to coin-cell or two-AAA IoT sensor nodes where its 1.8 V to 3.6 V supply range lets the cell discharge below the 2.0 V cutoff typical of older PIC16F parts. XLP nanoWatt sleep currents in the tens of nA, paired with the 16 MHz internal oscillator and hardware WDT, let duty-cycled temperature, motion, or contact sensors run for years on a primary cell. The 3.5 KB Flash comfortably holds a C-compiled application plus interrupt-driven radio handshake. Versus an ARM Cortex-M0+ solution the PIC16LF722 delivers simpler toolchain, lower cost, and faster wake-up for click-triggered use cases, though with a smaller RAM budget that limits buffering-heavy protocols.

📱

Remote Control and Consumer HMI

The PIC16LF722-I/SO is a strong fit for low-cost IR/ISM-band remote controls, e-paper key fobs, and small HMI keypads where the 8-bit core handles scanning, debouncing, and protocol framing without an RTOS. The PWM modules drive IR LEDs or buzzers directly, the EUSART interfaces to 2.4 GHz transceivers, and the 25 I/O pins accommodate 4x4 key matrices plus a few status LEDs. Industrial -40 C to +85 C temperature grade lets the same firmware ship into garage-door openers and white-goods user-interface boards. Compared with the PIC16LF720, the extra PWM and 1.5 KB additional Flash are valuable for multi-button, multi-protocol remotes.

🏭

White Goods User Interface Board

The PIC16LF722-I/SO powers the front-panel logic of washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, and microwave ovens where the SOIC-28 footprint is hand-solderable for prototypes and survives the thermal-cycling of the appliance environment. Its I2C master talks to LED drivers and character-LCD modules while the PWM drives beeper piezo elements. The wide supply range accepts direct connection to rectified 5 V rails without additional regulation. Compared with PIC18 alternatives, the PIC16F722 silicon is cheaper per part and uses less Flash for the same HMI firmware, an important factor when BOM cost drives product margin.

🚗

Automotive Interior Auxiliary Module

Although the PIC16LF722-I/SO is not AEC-Q100 qualified by default, it is widely used in non-safety automotive interior accessories like cabin lighting controllers, accessory-power switches, and USB-charger faceplate logic where it is paired with an upstream 12 V transorb and a 3.3 V LDO. The 25 I/O count is enough to drive multiple LED strings with PWM, monitor buttons, and read the ACC sense wire. The XLP silicon keeps quiescent draw below 1 mA to avoid disturbing quiescent-current budgets. For safety-critical body domains, step up to PIC16F722-I/SO-Q1 or the PIC18F24K22-I/SO AEC-Q100 part instead.

💊

Medical Home-Care Monitoring

The PIC16LF722-I/SO is a credible MCU for non-critical home-care devices such as bathroom scales, pill-box reminder timers, and basic blood-pressure cuff pumps, where its low Vdd range supports 3.3 V coin-cell operation and its small Flash footprint keeps firmware deterministic for IEC 62304 safety review. The 10-bit ADC reads bridge sensors directly, while the PWM regulates the cuff pump motor through a MOSFET driver. Compared with a 32-bit Cortex-M0 part, the PIC16 architecture simplifies hazard analysis because of its deterministic instruction cycle count and well-documented interrupt latency.

🌐

Industrial Sensor / Building Automation Transducer

The PIC16LF722-I/SO is a strong choice for 4-20 mA loop-powered transducers, room thermostats, and HVAC damper controllers where industrial temperature and small die footprint are required. Its I2C master can interface to environmental sensor ICs, the PWM outputs drive triac-based mains control circuits, and the EUSART supports Modbus RTU communication with a building controller. The wide supply range and on-chip brown-out reset allow direct connection to rectified 24 V rails after a regulator. Compared with a PIC16F193x, the PIC16LF722 is cheaper and the XLP silicon is preferable for battery-backed sensor clusters.

Designhinweise

Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible between Vdd (pin 15) and Vss (pin 6). For designs that use the ADC, add a 10 uF bulk capacitor at the supply pin and route AVdd/AVss separately if the silicon variant exposes them. Estimated: total decoupling should target an ESL below 1 nH - use an X7R 0402 or 0603 ceramic rather than a tantalum bulk for high-frequency bypass.

Route ICSPCLK (RB6) and ICSPDAT (RB7) as a short, parallel pair to a 6-pin ICSP header so that field firmware upgrades remain possible after conformal coating. MCLR (pin 3) requires a 10 kOhm pull-up to Vdd; do not leave MCLR floating. Avoid running high-current traces under the package or parallel to the oscillator pins to keep radiated emissions low.

Do not exceed the absolute maximum Vdd of 3.6 V on the LF variant - the silicon is permanently damaged above 4.0 V. Ensure firmware disables the watchdog timer only when the firmware loop is verified to operate correctly, otherwise the MCU will reset every 18 ms nominal. When migrating to the PIC16F722-I/SO, remember the F variant starts at 2.0 V minimum and will not power up from depleted 1.8 V cells.

Keep the crystal traces (RA6/OSC2 and RA7/OSC1) short and symmetric, with a ground guard ring around the crystal can to reduce EMI coupling into adjacent analog lines. The internal 16 MHz oscillator eliminates the crystal in many designs and saves two external components; calibrate the OSCTUNE register against the chosen accuracy target before committing to firmware that depends on tight timing.
