PIC16LF76-I/SS Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF76-I/SS is an 8-bit CMOS FLASH-based microcontroller from the PIC16F family, delivering 20MHz (200ns instruction cycle) performance with 14KB (8K x 14) of on-chip program memory in a 28-pin SSOP form factor. The 'LF' designation indicates the low-power F-version core (F = flash, L = low-voltage extended operation), supporting a wide operating voltage range typically down to 2.0V while maintaining full 20MHz throughput. The PIC16LF76-I/SS carries 368 bytes of RAM, 256 bytes of EEPROM, and 22 digital I/O pins shared with peripheral functions, with 5 channels of 8-bit A/D conversion plus two additional 8-bit timer modules and dual capture/compare/PWM modules.

An 8-bit PIC microcontroller (PIC MCU) is a RISC-based, Harvard-architecture single-chip computer that integrates CPU, Flash program memory, RAM, EEPROM, and peripherals onto a single die. The PIC16 family occupies the mid-range performance tier in the PIC hierarchy: PIC10/PIC12 (8-pin baseline) -> PIC16 (mid-range, 14-64 pins) -> PIC18 (enhanced, 16-bit instructions) -> dsPIC/PIC24 (DSP-capable 16-bit). PIC MCUs sit within the broader taxonomy of microcontroller -> embedded controller -> semiconductor -> integrated circuit, and are widely deployed where deterministic execution, low power, and small footprint are valued.

Key features that differentiate the PIC16LF76-I/SS include the PIC16F7X mid-range instruction set with only 35 single-word instructions, an integrated 8-bit ADC with 5 input channels for sensor or analog front-end applications, dual PWM/capture/compare modules for motor and lighting control, and an asynchronous serial port (USART/SCI) supporting both RS-232 and RS-485 interfaces. The 14KB flash program memory provides ample headroom for state-machine firmware, while 256 bytes of EEPROM supports non-volatile parameter storage without external parts.

The PIC16LF76-I/SS uses Microchip's mature PIC16F7X architecture with a 14-bit instruction word and a hardware stack depth of 8 levels, supporting nested interrupts and a deterministic interrupt latency of 4 instruction cycles. Its 8-bit data path, single-cycle multiplication via hardware, and byte-oriented arithmetic unit enable efficient embedded control loops. The device includes an internal watchdog timer, brown-out reset, and low-power sleep modes that drop current consumption to microampere levels when inactive, making it suitable for battery-powered applications.

Typical applications span industrial automation sensor nodes, home-appliance control panels, automotive body controllers, low-end HVAC thermostats, and battery-powered remote controls. The wide operating voltage tolerance allows direct connection to 3.3V or 5V rails and battery stacks from two to four cells, while the small SSOP-28 footprint fits space-constrained boards.

When designing with this part, reserve the analog input channels (AN0-AN4) for sensors requiring ADC sampling and avoid driving them with digital outputs during conversion. Use the on-chip EEPROM for non-volatile setpoint storage and budget flash endurance cycles when planning firmware-update strategies.

Typische Anwendungen

PIC16LF76-I/SS ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Industrial Sensor Monitoring, Home Appliance Control Panels, HVAC Thermostat Controllers, Automotive Body Controllers, Battery-Powered Remote Controls, Small Appliance Motor Control.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Monitoring

The PIC16LF76-I/SS fits industrial sensor monitoring nodes because its 5-channel 8-bit ADC samples analog process variables (temperature, pressure, flow) directly while the 20 MHz PIC16F7X core handles linearization and digital filtering. Its 14 KB Flash accommodates MODBUS RTU framing, lookup-table linearization, and diagnostic state machines. The 22 I/O pins drive status LEDs, relay coils, and isolated digital inputs. Compared with discrete A/D plus logic IC solutions, the integrated ADC, USART, and EEPROM (for sensor calibration constants) reduce BOM count. The LF low-voltage operation enables 24V industrial bus tolerance after a simple linear regulator drop. Industrial temperature range (-40C to +85C) supports cabinet-free deployment.

📱

Home Appliance Control Panels

In washing machines, dishwashers, and microwave oven control panels, the PIC16LF76-I/SS provides the deterministic 8-bit control needed for keypad debouncing, LED multiplexing, and triac-fired load timing. The 2 CCP modules drive PWM outputs for variable-intensity displays and buzzer tones. Its 256-byte EEPROM stores user-set cycles, language preferences, and fault logs across power cycles. The wide operating voltage range accepts rectified mains after a capacitive dropper, simplifying BOM versus a 5V-strict MCU. SSOP-28 keeps the board compact behind the front panel. Compared with PIC16F84 legacy designs, the LF76 adds a USART for diagnostic port and 5 ADC channels for temperature sensing.

🏭

HVAC Thermostat Controllers

The PIC16LF76-I/SS serves as the HVAC thermostat main controller, reading thermistor inputs via its 5-channel 8-bit ADC and driving TRIAC opto-isolators for compressor, fan, and heat-pump relay switching. The 14 KB Flash implements PID control loops, weekly schedule storage, and remote setpoint communication over the USART. EEPROM (256 bytes) retains user temperature schedules across power outages. The LF variant supports battery-backed thermostat operation during brownouts. The -40C to +85C industrial range covers unheated attic and garage installations. Versus ASIC thermostat chips, the PIC16LF76-I/SS allows in-field firmware feature upgrades and model differentiation.

🚗

Automotive Body Controllers

PIC16LF76-I/SS-based body controllers handle non-safety automotive functions: power-window sequencing, mirror adjustment, seat-position memory, and interior lighting fade. The 22 I/O pins directly drive low-side FET switches and read Hall-sensor position inputs. The 8-bit ADC monitors battery voltage and motor current for stall detection. Two CCP modules generate PWM for lighting fade and motor soft-start. The USART links to the body control network gateway. While not AEC-Q100 qualified, the industrial temperature range covers cabin installations. Compared with newer PIC16F18855 designs, the PIC16LF76-I/SS remains a cost-effective choice for low-end body modules with established firmware libraries.

📱

Battery-Powered Remote Controls

The PIC16LF76-I/SS suits battery-powered RF remote controls for garage doors, ceiling fans, and motorized blinds. Its low-voltage LF operation supports two AAA cells down to 2.0V, while nanoWatt sleep modes drop quiescent current to microampere levels when idle. The 20 MHz core handles encryption routines, rolling-code authentication, and debounced keypad scanning at wake-up. The 14 KB Flash stores multiple device IDs and pairing credentials. The 22 I/O pins interface to matrix keypads and RF transmitter enable lines. Versus PIC16F628-based legacy designs, the PIC16LF76-I/SS adds 5 ADC channels for battery monitoring and a USART for factory test access.

⚡

Small Appliance Motor Control

In small kitchen appliances (blenders, food processors, mixers) and hand tools, the PIC16LF76-I/SS provides closed-loop speed control via its two CCP PWM modules driving FET half-bridges. The 5-channel 8-bit ADC reads back-EMF, current shunt, and potentiometer speed-dial inputs for closed-loop regulation. The 14 KB Flash implements soft-start curves, overload protection, and stall-recovery algorithms. The EEPROM stores last-used speed presets per user. The 20 MHz core updates the control loop at sufficient rate for sensorless BLDC trapezoidal commutation. Compared with analog motor-control ICs, the PIC16LF76-I/SS enables user-feature differentiation through firmware alone.

Designhinweise

The PIC16LF76-I/SS LF variant operates down to approximately 2.0V per Microchip datasheet, supporting direct connection to two fresh alkaline or NiMH cells. For 5V designs, use a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of Vdd (pin 20) plus a bulk 10 uF tantalum at the regulator output. The internal brown-out reset (BOR) should be enabled in the configuration bits to prevent code execution at indeterminate Vdd levels during battery end-of-life.

Route the ICSP clock (RB6/PGC, pin 27) and ICSP data (RB7/PGD, pin 28) as a 2-wire programming bus with no series resistors or capacitors to ground, and place a 4.7 kohm pull-up on MCLR (pin 1). Keep the oscillator traces (OSC1 pin 9, OSC2 pin 10) short and surrounded by ground pour to minimize EMI coupling into the analog ADC inputs. Reserve analog signals on RA0-RA4/AN0-AN4 traces away from digital switching lines.

The PIC16LF76-I/SS configuration bits must be set correctly: disable the watchdog timer (WDTE) if not needed, enable the internal oscillator only if a crystal is absent, and configure the brown-out reset voltage (BORV) to match the lowest legitimate supply voltage. Failing to configure the LF-versus-F variant mismatch can cause code execution outside the LF's 2.0V minimum when the F-version is substituted by mistake.
