PIC18F45K80-I/P Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC18F45K80-I/P is a high-performance 8-bit PIC18 microcontroller with integrated ECAN, 32KB of Flash program memory, and 4KB of RAM, housed in a 40-pin PDIP (DIP-40) through-hole package. It executes instructions at up to 16 MIPS from a 64 MHz internal oscillator, and operates from 1.8 V to 5.5 V across the industrial -40 C to +85 C temperature range. The -I/P suffix denotes the industrial temperature grade and PDIP package.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer containing a CPU, non-volatile program memory, working RAM, and programmable peripherals. PIC microcontrollers use a RISC Harvard architecture that fetches instructions and data on separate buses, allowing most instructions to complete in one cycle. The PIC18F K80 family extends this with eXtreme Low Power (XLP) technology and an integrated CAN 2.0B controller, placing it in the tier of mid-range 8-bit MCUs alongside Atmel AVR and NXP HC08 devices, but with on-chip CAN support that historically required an external controller.

Key features include 12-bit A/D conversion across 11 channels, 5 PWM outputs, 9 enhanced Capture/Compare/PWM modules, 2 analog comparators, an integrated Charge Time Measurement Unit (CTMU) for capacitive touch, and nanoWatt XLP sleep modes that drop supply current into the nanoamp range. ECAN hardware accelerates CAN 2.0A/B frame handling, freeing the CPU from bit-banging.

The device uses a modified Harvard architecture with a 16-bit instruction word and 8-bit data path, plus an 8x8 hardware multiplier and 16x16 accumulator that accelerates DSP-style math without a separate DSP engine. EEPROM emulation is supported via Flash self-write, and the ICSP interface allows in-circuit programming and debugging.

Typical applications include CAN-based automotive body controllers, building automation gateways, elevator control panels, industrial sensor nodes, capacitive touch user interfaces, and low-power remote sensor stations. The combination of ECAN, XLP sleep, and 12-bit ADC makes the PIC18F45K80 particularly attractive for distributed nodes that sleep most of the time and wake briefly to transmit.

When designing with this part, place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD/VSS pair, and follow Microchip AN1229 (Low-Power Design Guide) for sleep current budgeting. Note that the -I/P industrial variant is pin-compatible with the -E/P extended temperature grade but specified only to +85 C, not +125 C.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in package-compatible alternatives, and practical design notes that go beyond what is in the bare Microchip datasheet, including same-package variants and the closest cross-brand 8-bit MCUs that fit the same 40-pin PDIP footprint.

Typische Anwendungen

PIC18F45K80-I/P ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: CAN-based Automotive Body Controller, Building Automation Gateway, Elevator Control Panel MCU, Industrial Capacitive Touch Sensor Node, Low-Power Remote Sensor Station, Educational and Prototyping Platform.

🚗

CAN-based Automotive Body Controller

The PIC18F45K80-I/P is a natural fit for CAN-based automotive body controllers because its integrated ECAN controller eliminates the external CAN transceiver-controller stack previously required. With 11 channels of 12-bit ADC, the part reads door-lock switches, ambient light sensors, and mirror position potentiometers; with 5 PWM channels it drives LED dimming, mirror motors, and indicator lamps. The nanoWatt XLP sleep mode keeps quiescent current in the nanoamp range when the vehicle is parked, critical for preserving battery charge over weeks of inactivity. Operating from 1.8 V to 5.5 V lets the same PCB run from either a 12 V battery-clamp rail or a 5 V regulated supply. According to the Microchip CAN library (AN1249), the ECAN module handles 1 Mbit/s bus traffic with negligible CPU overhead, leaving the 16 MIPS core free for diagnostics and body-control logic.

🏭

Building Automation Gateway

In building automation the PIC18F45K80-I/P serves as a sub-bus gateway node that aggregates sensor data from BACnet, Modbus, or KNX subnets onto a CAN backbone. The wide 1.8 V to 5.5 V supply range accepts direct battery operation during commissioning or run from a 24 V industrial rail via a small LDO. The 12-bit ADC and CTMU combine to support a panel of capacitive touch wall switches alongside analog temperature and humidity inputs without external ADCs. The 16 MIPS core is sufficient to run a TCP/IP-to-CAN bridging protocol stack from Microchip's MLA, while 4 KB of RAM holds 8+ CAN message buffers plus socket buffers. Per AN1229, the XLP sleep mode drops below 100 nA so battery-backed smoke-detector and CO2 nodes can run for years on a single Li-coin cell.

🛗

Elevator Control Panel MCU

Elevator control panels use the PIC18F45K80-I/P as the I/O controller behind capacitive touch button arrays, driven by the integrated CTMU which measures capacitance with sub-pF resolution. The 11-channel 12-bit ADC reads floor-position encoders and current-sense amplifiers, while 9 ECCP modules generate the PWM needed for indicator LEDs, buzzer tones, and door-motor control signals. ECAN flash adds a robust field-bus interface to the elevator controller cabinet, supporting 500 kbit/s traffic with hardware acceptance filtering that reduces software complexity. The 32 KB Flash comfortably holds the MLA TCP/IP stack plus a CANopen slave dictionary, while the 40-pin PDIP package is socketed for fast field replacement during service calls, an important consideration for elevator maintenance contracts.

🧩

Industrial Capacitive Touch Sensor Node

The PIC18F45K80-I/P excels in capacitive touch sensor nodes thanks to its integrated CTMU, which times constant-current charging of the touch electrode to sub-pF resolution. The mTouch library from Microchip (AN1250) supports buttons, sliders, and rotary wheels using only the on-chip ADC plus CTMU, with zero external analog components. The 11 ADC channels monitor adjacent analog sensors such as NTC thermistors or strain-gauge bridges, while the 32 KB Flash holds the touch-decoding firmware plus CANopen stack. nanoWatt XLP sleep currents in the nanoamp range let a battery-powered touch panel last >5 years on two AA cells, important for retrofit installations where running mains wiring is impractical.

🌱

Low-Power Remote Sensor Station

The PIC18F45K80-I/P powers remote sensor stations that wake briefly every few minutes to read sensors and transmit over CAN, then return to nanoWatt XLP sleep. Sleep current below 100 nA lets a single D-size Li-SOCl2 cell last 10+ years in a one-hour wake-cycle profile. The 5 V tolerant I/O and 1.8 V minimum supply accept direct battery operation without a boost converter, while the 12-bit ADC delivers the resolution needed for thermistor, photodiode, and soil-moisture probes. The integrated ECAN controller with hardware filtering makes the part a strong fit for solar-powered agricultural sensor nodes that share a CAN bus in a greenhouse or vineyard deployment.

🎓

Educational and Prototyping Platform

The PIC18F45K80-I/P is widely used in universities and design labs because the 40-pin PDIP package is socketed for easy swapping and the PICkit 3/4 programmer/debugger attaches through the ICSP interface on pins RB6/RB7. The wide 1.8 V to 5.5 V supply range tolerates beginner wiring mistakes, while 32 KB Flash is plenty for teaching embedded C, CAN, and capacitive touch curricula. The free MPLAB X IDE and XC8 compiler let students program the part at no cost, and the PIC18 architecture's simple instruction set makes register-level tutorials approachable. Per Microchip University courseware, this specific part is recommended for CAN, XLP, and CTMU lab modules.

Auswahlhilfe

Choose PIC18F45K80-I/P when you need a 40-pin PDIP 8-bit MCU with integrated ECAN, 12-bit ADC, capacitive-touch CTMU, and nanoWatt XLP sleep for industrial (-40 C to +85 C) automotive body, building automation, or low-power sensor node designs. Choose PIC18F46K80-I/P if you need 64 KB Flash instead of 32 KB - same package, same ECAN, same peripherals, drop-in compatible. Choose PIC18F45K80-E/P if your application runs above +85 C up to +125 C, such as automotive under-hood or industrial cabinet environments; same die, same pinout, extended temp grade. Choose PIC18F4580-I/P only for legacy designs that depend on the legacy ECAN register map; new designs should prefer the K80 for ADC resolution and sleep current. Avoid the PIC18F45K22 as a replacement unless your design does not use the ECAN peripheral at all - the K22 family has a different CAN-less peripheral set.

Designhinweise

Estimated: at 5 V VDD with the CPU running full-speed at 64 MHz, the core draws roughly 11 mA (per Microchip DC characteristics table typical values). Adding ADC, ECAN active, and I/O toggling pushes total to ~15 mA. For battery-powered XLP designs the datasheet quotes <100 nA in RTCC sleep mode, so duty-cycle budgeting (e.g. 1 ms wake per second) drops average current to ~15 uA. Use MCP1700 (1.6 uA Iq LDO) to avoid wasting quiescent current in the regulator stage.

Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD pin (pin 11 and pin 32 on the 40-pin PDIP). Add a bulk 10 uF tantalum or ceramic at the board supply entry. Keep the analog AVREF trace short and isolated from PWM switching traces; the ECAN bus traces (RC6/RC7 or RD6/RD7 if EUSART2 is used) should be 100 ohm differential with a ground plane underneath, terminated with 120 ohm resistors at each end of the bus.

Do not confuse the PIC18F45K80 (K80 family, ECAN) with the PIC18F45K22 (K22 family, no ECAN); the K22 has different peripheral mapping and a different ECAN register block, so porting firmware requires verifying the CAN module registers. Also note that the -I/P (industrial) variant is only specified to +85 C, not +125 C - use the -E/P suffix for automotive or industrial-extended applications. Per errata DS80000546, early silicon revisions have a CTMU calibration drift; apply the calibration workaround in AN1250 before relying on capacitive-touch absolute readings.

Place the external 32.768 kHz crystal on SOSCO/SOSCI (RC0/RC1) within 5 mm of the pins, with the load capacitors (typically 12 pF) referenced to a clean analog ground. Avoid routing the ECAN bus or PWM traces under the crystal; capacitive coupling will modulate the oscillator frequency and degrade CAN bit-timing accuracy. For the ICSP pins (RB6/RB7), add 4.7 kohm pull-ups so the programmer can drive the lines without contention with external circuitry during debug.

The ECAN bus requires a 120 ohm termination resistor at each end of the bus to suppress reflections; place the resistor within 5 mm of the CANH/CANL pins of the MCP2551 transceiver. Keep stub lengths under 30 mm (one-tenth of the signal rise time at 1 Mbit/s). For EUSART RS-485 buses add a 100 ohm termination resistor at the receiver end. The CTMU traces to touch pads should be guarded by a GND trace to prevent crosstalk from adjacent PWM or switched lines.
