PIC18LF25K83T-I/SS Übersicht

The Microchip PIC18LF25K83T-I/SS is an 8-bit PIC18 XLP microcontroller featuring 32KB Flash, 2KB RAM, and 1KB EEPROM, packaged in a 28-pin SSOP (5.30mm body). It operates at up to 64MHz with a C compiler-optimized RISC architecture and integrates a CAN 2.0B controller, two I2C, two SPI, and 2KB SRAM, all on a wide 1.8V to 5.5V supply rail.

An 8-bit microcontroller is a single-chip computer built around an 8-bit data-path CPU; the PIC18 family from Microchip is the higher-performance tier of that category with hardware multipliers and 16-bit instructions. Within the broader taxonomy, PIC18F sits under Microcontroller -> Embedded MCU -> Integrated Circuit, and the 'LF' prefix designates the extended low-power (XLP) variants that operate down to 1.8V. The PIC18(L)F25/26K83 family specifically adds integrated CAN bus connectivity, positioning it above general-purpose 8-bit MCUs and alongside 16-bit alternatives such as dsPIC33 in Microchip's CAN-capable portfolio.

The 32KB self-programmable Flash and 256-byte data EEPROM, combined with 2KB SRAM and the 12-bit ADC with Computation (ADC2), support advanced touch sensing via Capacitive Voltage Divider (CVD) techniques. Dual I2C/SPI, a CAN 2.0B controller with DMA, and a 32MHz internal oscillator remove many external components. eXtreme Low Power (XLP) technology keeps active current in the microamp range for battery-powered designs, and IDLE/DOZE modes let dynamic power track the application duty cycle.

The 28-SSOP package has a compact 5.30mm body with 0.65mm pitch, suiting hand-solderable prototypes as well as volume assembly. Hardware context includes an integrated DMA controller that offloads data movement, configurable logic cells, and a peripheral pin select (PPS) that simplifies PCB routing by remapping digital peripherals to alternate pins without rewiring the board.

Typical uses include automotive body and CAN nodes, industrial sensor and control modules, capacitive-touch user interfaces, low-power IoT edge nodes, and battery-powered instrumentation. A robust CAN peripheral and 12-bit ADC2 also suit medical, white-goods, and HVAC fieldbus designs where deterministic messaging and low standby power are required.

When designing, allocate two-layer board area for the SSOP-28 ground pad and confirm the decouple network (typically 100nF + 1uF) is within 3mm of VDD. For CAN nodes, verify the transceiver load and bus termination against ISO 11898 and use the internal DMA to keep CPU overhead low under heavy bus traffic.

Designhinweise

Estimated: The PIC18LF25K83T-I/SS XLP active current at 1 MHz / 1.8 V is approximately 35 uA/MIPS, and sleep current drops below 1 uA. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of VDD (pin 19) and a bulk 1-10 uF ceramic on the same rail. For CAN bus nodes, add a TVS diode such as SMAJ33CA on the bus lines and a common-mode choke to suppress EMI from motor drivers.

The 28-SSOP has a 0.65 mm pitch; route power traces with at least 0.20 mm width and place the ICSP header (RB6/RB7/MCLR/VDD/VSS) on the board edge for production programming. Keep the analog AVSS/AVDD pair (if used) short and decoupled separately from digital VDD. Avoid routing the CAN bus traces near switching nodes - use a ground guard on both sides of the differential pair.

Do not exceed 5.5 V on any pin or VDD - the LF variant tolerates down to 1.8 V but cannot survive reverse polarity or inductive transients without external protection. The MCLR pin (pin 1) requires a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD for normal operation; do not leave it floating. For ADC2 CVD touch sensing, follow Microchip's mTouch layout guide and add a ground ring around the touch electrodes to suppress noise coupling from the CAN bus.

Estimated: At maximum 64 MHz / 5.5 V, the K83 draws approximately 15 mA active, dissipating around 80 mW. The 28-SSOP package thermal resistance (theta_JA) is approximately 95 C/W, so the junction rises only about 8 C above ambient - well within the 125 C operating junction limit. No heatsink is required for typical designs, but in enclosed IP65 housings, verify case temperature stays below 85 C ambient.
