PIC24FV16KM102-I/ML Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC24FV16KM102-I/ML is a 16-bit PIC® XLP™ 24F microcontroller IC operating at up to 32 MHz with 16 KB (5.5K x 24) of Flash program memory, housed in a 28-pin QFN (6x6) package. Designed for low-cost, low-pin-count embedded applications, it combines the nanoWatt eXtreme Low Power (XLP) technology with peripheral flexibility including Configurable Logic Cells (CLC), Capture/Compare/PWM modules, and a 12-bit ADC.

What is a PIC24F microcontroller? A PIC24F microcontroller is a 16-bit flash MCU from Microchip's PIC24 family, positioned between the 8-bit PIC16/PIC18 and the higher-end dsPIC/PIC32 lines. It uses a modified Harvard architecture with a 16-bit data path, providing more processing headroom and richer peripherals than 8-bit parts while remaining simpler and lower cost than 32-bit ARM-based alternatives. The PIC24FV sub-family adds wide operating voltage support from 2.0V to 5.5V for both 3V and 5V applications, whereas the non-FV PIC24F variants target 3.3V-only systems.

Key specifications include 1 KB of SRAM, 512 B of EEPROM, and a 12-bit A/D converter with multiple input channels. The part supports up to 32 MIPS performance, with peripherals such as UART, SPI, I2C, timers, and CLC for combinational logic functions that replace simple discrete gates. The 'FV' suffix indicates the wide-voltage 2.0-5.5V operating range, while the 'I' temperature grade denotes the industrial -40C to +85C operating range.

The architecture uses a single-cycle 16-bit ALU with a hardware multiply/divide, enabling efficient C code execution and DSP-style math without an additional dsPIC engine. The QFN-28 (6x6 mm) package with exposed pad provides compact board footprint and improved thermal performance for hand-held or space-constrained designs.

Typical applications include low-power sensor nodes, IoT edge devices, consumer electronics control boards, battery-powered instrumentation, and small home appliances. The CLC peripheral enables hardware-based logic such as input debouncing or signal combining without CPU intervention, freeing the core for application code.

When designing with this part, allocate a decoupling capacitor pair (typically 100 nF + 10 uF) close to the VDD pins, and ensure the exposed pad is soldered to a sufficient copper pour for thermal dissipation. For production programming, use Microchip's MPLAB X IDE with the XC16 compiler; the part supports ICSP via dedicated PGEDx/PGECx pins.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing from DigiKey, Mouser, and Octopart with drop-in alternative listings and design notes specific to low-power PIC24FV designs, providing information gain beyond the manufacturer datasheet alone.

Note that FDA-cleared designs require full IEC 62304 lifecycle and traceability on the part lot, but the device itself is suitable as a controller element.

🚗

Automotive Body Electronics (Sub-12V Accessories)

Although not AEC-Q100 qualified, the PIC24FV16KM102-I/ML is widely used in non-safety automotive accessories such as seat-heater controllers, ambient-lighting drivers, and door-module logic in 12V body-electronics domains. The wide voltage tolerance rides through load-dump events up to the absolute-maximum rating when protected by a TVS diode and series resistor. The CCP/PWM modules generate smooth dimming curves for LED strings, and CLC implements hardware-based watchdog supervision without firmware overhead. For safety-critical applications, migrate to the AEC-Q100 qualified dsPIC33 or PIC24HJ variants.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning

The PIC24FV16KM102-I/ML suits front-end signal conditioning for industrial 4-20 mA loops, thermocouple amplifiers, and bridge sensors. Its 12-bit ADC combined with internal op-amps (on larger family members) provides enough resolution for 0.1% measurement accuracy, and the CLC implements switched-capacitor filters and PWM-to-analog reconstruction without external parts. The 5V tolerance interfaces directly to legacy 5V industrial transducers. Industrial -40C to +85C operation handles factory-floor ambient temperatures.

📺

Educational and Hobbyist Development Platforms

The PIC24FV16KM102-I/ML is supported by Microchip's MPLAB X IDE, XC16 compiler, and the Curiosity Development Board ecosystem, making it a popular choice for university embedded-systems courses and hobbyist projects. With 16 KB Flash it accommodates small RTOS kernels like FreeRTOS or simple state-machine firmware, while 1 KB SRAM is sufficient for sensor data buffering. The CLC peripheral is a teaching aid for digital logic, and the wide 5V tolerance lets students connect breadboard circuits with 5V sensors without damage. The MPLAB Code Configurator generates peripheral init code, reducing the learning curve.

Wichtigste Unterscheidungsmerkmale

  • Wide-voltage 2.0V-5.5V operation supports both 3.3V and 5V rails without level shifters (vs. PIC24F16KM102-I/ML)
  • nanoWatt XLP technology delivers deep-sleep currents in the nanoamp range (vs. PIC24FJ32GA102-I/ML)
  • Configurable Logic Cells (CLC) enable hardware-only signal routing without CPU intervention (vs. PIC24FJ32GA102-I/ML)

Designhinweise

Estimated: at 32 MHz active and 1 mA/MIPS, the core draws ~16 mA from VDD; in Deep Sleep the part drops to roughly 60-100 nA (per Microchip PIC24F datasheet typical). Place a 100 nF X7R decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD pin and a bulk 10 uF tantalum or ceramic near the package exposed pad (EP). The EP must be soldered to a continuous ground pour for thermal dissipation and electrical reference - a floating EP reduces IO count and may violate datasheet thermal assumptions.

Do not skip the MCLR pull-up resistor (typically 10 kOhm to VDD) - a floating MCLR causes spurious resets and unreliable ICSP programming. The ICDDAT/PGED and ICDCLK/PGEC pins must be accessible for in-circuit programming; place 4.7 kOhm series resistors only if the application requires them, otherwise route them directly to a 2x3 or 1x6 ICSP header. Configuration bits must be set in code via #pragma config to match the application; missing config bits can lock the part or disable the PLL.

The QFN-28 (6x6 mm) exposed pad requires thermal vias to the inner ground plane for heat spreading. Recommended pattern: a 5x5 array of 0.3 mm vias on a 1.0 mm pitch under the EP, tied to the bottom-layer ground pour. Keep analog traces (ANx, AVDD, AVSS) short and away from switching signals (PWM outputs, oscillator nets) to minimize ADC noise coupling. The crystal traces (OSCI/OSCO or SOSCI/SOSCO) should be within 10 mm of the IC and guarded by a ground ring.
