PIC32CM1216MC00032-I/PT Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC32CM1216MC00032-I/PT is a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0+ microcontroller from the PIC32CM MC family, operating at up to 48 MHz and integrating 128KB of Flash and 16KB of SRAM in a 32-pin TQFP (7x7 mm) package with industrial operating temperature range -40C to +85C.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory (Flash), data memory (SRAM), and programmable peripherals into one package. Within the broader semiconductor taxonomy, this PIC32CM MC belongs to the Cortex-M0+ microcontrollers -> 32-bit microcontrollers -> microcontrollers (MCU) -> microcontrollers & processors -> integrated circuits hierarchy. The PIC32CM MC family is specifically designed for motor control, consumer, commercial, industrial and automotive applications in electrically noisy environments, with robust 5V-tolerant I/O.

Key features include the ARM Cortex-M0+ core (Thumb-2 instruction set, single-cycle multiplier), 128KB Flash, 16KB SRAM, dedicated motor-control peripherals (PWM, QEI), up to 48 MHz operation, multiple SERCOM serial interfaces, LIN support, and 5V-tolerant I/O. The 5V tolerance allows direct interface with legacy analog and 5V logic without level shifters, which is uncommon in modern Cortex-M0+ devices and a strong differentiator.

The architecture uses a Harvard-style bus with separate Flash and SRAM channels, allowing simultaneous instruction fetch and data access. Hardware-level single-cycle GPIO access enables fast deterministic I/O toggling for motor commutation, while a low-power sleep mode with RTC retention suits battery-backed applications. The integrated Crypto/Security region (in some family members) and true random number generator support secure boot use cases.

Typical applications include BLDC/PMSM motor control (small fans, pumps, appliance motors), 5V industrial sensor conditioning, LIN nodes in automotive body and comfort networks, consumer appliance control boards, and general purpose 5V embedded control replacing PIC16/PIC24 designs. The wide operating voltage range and 5V I/O make it ideal for drop-in upgrades of legacy 5V designs that cannot tolerate 3.3V-only MCUs.

Key design considerations: the 'I' suffix indicates -40C to +85C industrial temperature range; the 'PT' suffix indicates TQFP-32. Use MPLAB X IDE and the PIC32CM MC00 Curiosity Nano Evaluation Kit (EV10N93A) for development. The device requires an external decoupling network; place a 100 nF X7R ceramic capacitor within 3 mm of each VDD pin and a 4.7 uF bulk capacitor near the MCU.

The 128KB Flash holds state-machine code for compressor control, defrost cycles and user interface handling. The SERCOM modules drive UART/SPI displays and I2C sensor packs. The 48 MHz core runs user interface refresh, motor control loops and safety diagnostics concurrently. Drop-in replacement of legacy PIC16/PIC24 designs preserves the 5V I/O architecture while modernizing the toolchain to ARM Cortex-M0+ and MPLAB Harmony v3.

🧩

Smart Home / IoT Edge Nodes

The PIC32CM1216MC00032-I/PT fits smart-home edge controllers where 5V tolerance, low cost and deterministic response matter more than wireless integration. It can host the application logic of connected lighting, blinds, thermostats and leak detectors, while offloading Wi-Fi/BLE to a companion module such as the ATWINC3400 or RNWF02. The 128KB Flash holds OTA-capable application images, and the 48 MHz core runs control loops and MQTT messaging. The -40C to +85C industrial range covers outdoor junction boxes and garage environments. Low-power sleep modes extend battery life on remote sensor nodes.

🔧

General Purpose 5V Embedded Control

The PIC32CM1216MC00032-I/PT serves as a modern replacement for older PIC16F and PIC24F designs in general purpose 5V embedded controllers such as HVAC control boards, vending machines, access control panels and battery chargers. The ARM Cortex-M0+ core with Thumb-2 instruction set improves code density over legacy PIC16, while the 128KB Flash supports more sophisticated user interfaces and communication stacks. The 5V-tolerant GPIO removes external level shifters and protects against 5V transients common in long cable harnesses. The SERCOM-based peripherals provide flexible UART, SPI and I2C channels for connecting to sensors, displays and external peripherals.

Designhinweise

Place a 100 nF X7R ceramic decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of each VDD pin and a single 4.7 uF bulk capacitor near the MCU. The PIC32CM1216MC00032-I/PT has multiple VDD and GND pins (typically at corners and middle of the TQFP-32 body); each pair must have its own 100 nF cap for low-impedance switching return paths. The 5V supply tolerance allows direct regulation from a 7805-style linear regulator or a wide-input DC-DC without tight output regulation.

Route the crystal traces (PA00/XIN, PA01/XOUT) symmetrically and keep them short with a guard ground on both sides to avoid picking up motor noise. Place the crystal within 5 mm of the MCU and surround it with a ground pour. Avoid running PWM traces directly under the crystal - motor PWM edges carry high dV/dt and can couple into the oscillator. If unused, configure XIN/XOUT as GPIO and leave them floating only if the internal 48 MHz oscillator is selected.

Do not assume the PIC32CM1216MC00032-I/PT and PIC32CM1216MC00032-I/RTB (VQFN-32) are interchangeable: they share the pin count but the physical footprint, lead pitch and pin 1 location differ. The TQFP-32 and VQFN-32 land patterns are not drop-in compatible. Also note that the -I and -E suffixes indicate -40C to +85C and -40C to +125C respectively - do not deploy the -I variant in under-hood automotive applications without thermal verification.

Motor control designs should separate the analog ground (return for current-sense shunt resistors) from the digital ground (return for MCU core and logic). Connect them at a single star point near the MCU's GND pin to avoid ground bounce injecting noise into the ADC readings. Place the analog supply decoupling (10 uF + 100 nF) close to AVDD pin if exposed, and use wide traces for the motor phase outputs to handle the PWM peak currents.
