PIC32MX210F016B-I/SP Übersicht

The Microchip PIC32MX210F016B-I/SP is a 32-bit MIPS M4K microcontroller running at 40 MHz (66 DMIPS), integrating 16 KB of Flash, 4 KB of SRAM, and a USB 2.0 full-speed device controller in a 28-pin SPDIP (Skinny Plastic DIP) through-hole package. Active current consumption is below 0.5 mA/MHz, making it suitable for USB-connected embedded products that require both computational headroom and modest power draw.

What is a PIC32MX? The PIC32MX family from Microchip Technology extends the PIC architecture to a 32-bit MIPS M4K core while preserving the legacy PIC toolchain and peripheral ecosystem. PIC32MX devices occupy the segment between 8-bit PIC16/PIC18 MCUs and the higher-performance PIC32MZ/PIC32MM lines, targeting USB, graphics, and audio bridging designs where deterministic interrupt latency and large address space matter. They function as mid-range application processors, sitting within the broader hierarchy: microcontroller -> 32-bit MCU -> MIPS M4K core -> PIC32 family.

Key features include two I2S/SPI modules for codec and serial audio interfaces, Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) remapping for flexible I/O assignment, a Parallel Master Port (PMP) for graphics or external memory, a 10-bit ADC with up to 13 channels, five 16-bit timers, two comparators, and a Charge Time Measurement Unit (CTMU) that simplifies mTouch capacitive touch button and slider implementation. The on-chip USB 2.0 full-speed device transceiver (12 Mbps) eliminates the need for an external PHY and integrates dedicated DMA channels.

Architecturally, the device combines a 5-stage pipelined MIPS32 M4K core with single-cycle hardware multiply, separate 16 KB instruction Flash and 4 KB data RAM, and a dedicated DMA controller with four channels. The USB SIE (Serial Interface Engine) is paired with an internal 96 MHz PLL and on-chip voltage regulator, allowing the part to operate from a single 2.3 V to 3.6 V supply.

Typical applications include USB human-interface devices (HID), USB-to-UART bridges, low-cost audio docks using I2S, capacitive touch user interfaces (CTMU), small graphical displays via PMP, and consumer/industrial control nodes requiring on-board USB device connectivity. Through-hole SPDIP packaging also makes it convenient for hobbyist, education, and prototyping builds.

When designing with this part, note that the SPDIP variant exposes a reduced pin subset (no USB D+/D- on some 28-pin variants; verify before PCB layout) - the 28-SPDIP does include USB functionality on dedicated pins. Decoupling requires 0.1 µF on each VDD plus bulk capacitance near the VCAP pin.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives in the same 28-SPDIP footprint, and practical design notes not consolidated on the manufacturer datasheet.

🧩

USB HID Human Interface Devices

The PIC32MX210F016B-I/SP is well-matched to USB HID device designs because its on-chip USB 2.0 full-speed transceiver eliminates an external PHY while PPS lets the engineer remap USB, I2C, and SPI signals to optimize PCB routing. Its 40 MHz MIPS M4K core has ample headroom for HID report generation, debouncing, and LED feedback loops, while 4 KB SRAM is sufficient for HID report buffers and a small RTOS or state machine. Drawing under 0.5 mA/MHz, the part fits bus-powered designs where strict suspend-current limits apply.

🔧

USB CDC Virtual COM Port Bridges

The PIC32MX210F016B-I/SP serves as a USB-to-UART bridge for industrial sensors, debug consoles, and point-of-sale peripherals because its integrated USB device SIE handles CDC enumeration without external components. The DMA controller offloads bulk transfers so the 40 MHz core stays free for protocol handling, while the 16 KB Flash accommodates Microchip's USB CDC stack plus a custom command layer. PPS allows the UART, SPI, or I2C target interface to land on any convenient GPIO, simplifying board layout.

📱

Capacitive Touch User Interfaces (mTouch)

The PIC32MX210F016B-I/SP integrates a Charge Time Measurement Unit (CTMU) that pairs with its 10-bit ADC to implement Microchip's mTouch capacitive touch button and slider firmware. Designhinweise

Decouple every VDD/VSS pair with a 0.1 µF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the pins, and add a 1-10 µF bulk capacitor near the VCAP pin (pin 20 on 28-SPDIP). The on-chip voltage regulator needs this capacitance for stability. For USB applications, place an additional 0.1 µF + 4.7 µF on the VUSB pin (pin 16) as required by the Microchip PIC32MX2xx datasheet. Power sequencing is not required because the internal LDO handles startup.

Route USB D+ and D- as a 90-ohm differential pair with matched length to within 150 mil and keep them away from switching signals. Place the 15 kohm pull-down on D- and 1.5 kohm pull-up on D+ according to USB specification. PPS gives flexibility, but USB pins (RA3/RA4 on 28-SPDIP) are fixed - do not remap. Keep the 12 MHz crystal traces short and symmetric, and place guard ground around the crystal traces for noise immunity.

Do not exceed the 3.6 V maximum on VDD - this part is NOT 5 V tolerant on any I/O. Ensure the MCLR pin (pin 1 on some packages; verify in the datasheet) has a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD and a 0.1 µF capacitor for clean reset, or use the internal MCLR. For programming via ICSP, the PGEC1/PGED1 pins must not be pulled low at reset. The CTMU current source requires calibration before first use - call the mTouch calibration routine before scanning touch channels.

The 28-SPDIP package has longer lead inductance than surface-mount variants, so high-speed signals above 40 MHz benefit from careful trace impedance control. For SPI clocks above 10 MHz, add a 33-ohm series resistor at the driver to dampen ringing. The USB differential pair should maintain 90-ohm differential impedance. Avoid routing analog inputs (ANx) parallel to digital signals for more than 25 mm to prevent coupling into ADC measurements.
