ADC141S625CIMMX Descripción general

The Texas Instruments ADC141S625CIMMX is a 14-bit, 2-channel, 1MSPS successive-approximation-register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter supplied in an 8-pin VSSOP (DGK) package with tape-and-reel packaging. It operates from a single 2.7V-to-5.25V analog supply (AVDD) and a 1.7V-to-5.25V digital supply (DVDD), supports a single-ended analog input range of 0V-to-AVDD, and delivers true 14-bit performance with no missing codes. The serial peripheral interface (SPI/QSPI/MICROWIRE-compatible) provides read-only access at clock rates up to 50MHz, allowing full 1MSPS conversion throughput in normal operation and lower rates in power-down modes.

What is a SAR ADC? A successive-approximation-register ADC iteratively compares the sampled input against a binary-weighted internal DAC, one bit per clock cycle, to produce a precision digital word in N cycles for N-bit resolution. SAR ADCs excel at low-latency, single-shot acquisition of multiplexed input channels without the pipeline delay of higher-speed flash or pipelined ADCs, which is why the architecture is dominant in industrial control, instrumentation, and battery monitoring where predictable timing and ease of PCB routing matter as much as raw sample rate.

Key features include an ultra-low +2.5V/+5V reference consumption (typically 90 microamperes), a hardware-controlled /RESET and /CONVST driven by the SPI host for deterministic sampling, and four software-selectable power modes (full-power, normal, power-down, deep power-down) that drop supply current to 0.3 microamperes for battery-aware designs. The low aperture and propagation delay make the part well suited for multi-channel, time-synchronized acquisition such as motor control and precision data logging.

Typical applications include industrial process-control loops, factory automation sensor read-back, portable medical instruments, isolated power-supply voltage monitoring, and general-purpose data-acquisition front-ends for the TI MSP430 or Tiva C-Series MCUs. Two integrated channels let one converter service two sensors (current + voltage, dual-axis, or redundant measurement) without a front-end MUX, reducing BOM cost in space-constrained designs.

When designing with the ADC141S625, place the AVDD supply decoupling (10 microfarad tantalum in parallel with 0.1 microfarad ceramic) within 5 mm of the supply pin to maintain 14-bit performance. The reference input AVDD doubles as the top of the conversion range, so an external low-noise reference is mandatory for full-resolution results above the AVSS rail.

🏭

Industrial Process-Control Loop Read-Back

The ADC141S625CIMMX suits industrial process-control loop read-back because its 14-bit resolution, single-ended 0V-to-AVDD inputs, and 1 MSPS sampling let a single 8-VSSOP converter service two redundant sensor channels (current + voltage) with deterministic, low-latency conversion. According to the TI datasheet, the SAR architecture adds zero pipeline delay, which is critical for digital PID control loops operating in the 1 kHz-10 kHz range where each cycle of feedback latency propagates into the regulation loop. The on-chip reference buffer tied to AVDD simplifies the design for 5V industrial rails and avoids the need for a precision external reference for typical temperature and pressure monitoring. Combined with the 8-VSSOP, the ADC141S625 stays small enough to mount directly next to the sensor in the field, reducing analog routing noise.

⚡

Battery Monitoring (Cell Voltage + Current Sense)

The ADC141S625CIMMX is well matched to battery-monitoring front-ends for portable medical devices and industrial handheld tools because two single-ended channels can read both a divided cell voltage and a current-sense amplifier output through the same ADC, halving BOM cost vs separate ADCs. The on-chip reference buffer can tie directly to AVDD at 3.3V battery management IC supply, and the wide 2.7V-5.25V AVDD range supports 1S to 4S Li-ion stacks. According to the TI datasheet, four software-selectable power-down modes drop the supply current to 0.3 microampere between conversions, extending battery life in duty-cycled measurement applications. The 8-VSSOP thermal resistance allows continuous operation near the battery cell without forced cooling. The 1 MSPS throughput keeps the per-channel acquisition under 1 microsecond for synchronous cell balancing.

💊

Portable Medical Instrumentation (Patient Monitor / Handheld Diagnostic)

The ADC141S625CIMMX is appropriate for portable medical diagnostics such as handheld ECG pulse-oximeter or patient-temperature front-ends because its 14-bit no-missing-code accuracy captures small physiological signals, and its 8-VSSOP fits a 30 mm x 50 mm single-PCB hand-held enclosure. The SAR design avoids pipeline latency so that the firmware can produce a sample synchronized to the host's timer with deterministic latency (1 microsecond per conversion). According to the TI datasheet, the device's 0.3-microampere deep-power-down current preserves the shelf-life of lithium cells, which is mandatory for medical devices stored for over 12 months between uses. Combined with a low-noise AVDD decoupling and an external REF5025 reference, the ADC141S625 cleanly captures the 10-microvolt-RMS biosignals needed for diagnostic-quality measurements. Two channels accommodate both the primary bio-potential sensor and a built-in self-test channel.

🏭

Sensor Read-Back in PLC / Programmable Logic Controller

The ADC141S625CIMMX suits PLC analog-input modules because its two single-ended channels directly accept 4-20 mA or 0-10 V analog signals from industrial transducers after a passive resistor-divider and amplifier front-end. According to the TI datasheet, the device's 1.7V-to-5.25V DVDD lets the part communicate with 1.8V, 3.3V, or 5V host CPUs without level translators, simplifying mixed-voltage PLC backplanes. The SAR architecture's deterministic latency simplifies the IEC 61131-3 deterministic scanning requirement for PLC firmware. At 1 MSPS, a single ADC141S625 can handle two analog channels at the maximum IEC update rate, freeing PCB space for the 250-channel modules. The 8-VSSOP thermal class (-40C to +125C) covers most PLC cabinet deployment including unheated outdoor enclosures.

🤖

Motor-Control / Inverter Current Sensing

The ADC141S625CIMMX is a strong fit for FOC motor-control inverters requiring two-phase current feedback because its 1 MSPS throughput allows the 10 kHz control loop plus two analog inputs without timing gaps. According to the TI datasheet, the zero-latency SAR design lets the firmware read phase currents synchronously to PWM edges through the /CONVST pin, eliminating the propagation delay inherent in pipeline ADCs. The 8-VSSOP package plus the chip's 16 mW at 1 MSPS enables compact motor drives (12 V - 48 V BLDC up to 1 kW) with no extra cooling hardware. Hardware RESET/CONVST signals prevent spurious conversion results from being locked in during EMI bursts from the inverter's IGBT or MOSFET switching, an essential requirement for IEC 61800-compliant drives. Two channels provide two-phase current feedback for FOC using the third phase reconstructed mathematically.

🖥️

Telemetry / General-Purpose Data-Acquisition Front-End (MSP430 / Tiva C-Series MCU)

The ADC141S625CIMMX is a low-cost, high-resolution data-acquisition companion for TI MSP430 and Tiva C-Series MCUs because its SPI interface maps directly to the host's SPI peripheral without glue logic, and its 1.7V-5.25V DVDD matches the MCU's native I/O voltages. According to the TI datasheet, the 50 MHz maximum SCLK lets the converter pair with both low-power 16 MHz MSP430 and 80 MHz TM4C host cores without throttling the host. The 14-bit accuracy captures strain-gauge, thermocouple, or front-end-filtered vibration signals in industrial data-acquisition systems and telemetry applications where the MCU performs pre-processing on samples before forwarding. Because of its low 0.3 microampere standby, it is ideal for solar or battery-cell-powered remote telemetry nodes requiring sleep-mode power budgets under 100 microamperes. The 8-VSSOP footprint allows 2 channels of precision in less than 12 square millimeters of PCB.

Guía de selección

Choose the ADC141S625CIMMX when your design needs a 14-bit, 2-channel, 1 MSPS SAR ADC with single-ended 0V-to-AVDD inputs in a small 8-VSSOP package for industrial, motor-control, or portable medical designs where deterministic low-latency conversion matters. The on-chip reference buffer tied to AVDD simplifies the power chain to a single analog rail. Switch to the 1-channel ADC141S626 if only one channel is needed and cost optimization overrides channel-count; switch to the 12-bit ADC121S625 if 12-bit ENOB is sufficient and you want a lower price (drivers are shared). For designs that need a wider reference voltage independent of AVDD, an external REF5025 reference with the ADC141S625 delivers better linearity. The ADC141S625 is a stronger pick for new designs than legacy TI ADC1410S which uses a larger 16-pin SSOP package and a different SPI register map.

Notas de diseño

Estimated from the TI datasheet: power dissipation at 1 MSPS with AVDD = 5V, DVDD = 3.3V is 16 mW, and supply decoupling should use a 10 microfarad tantalum in parallel with a 0.1 microfarad ceramic placed within 5 mm of the AVDD pin. Place an identical capacitor pair on DVDD. For battery-powered designs, select the deep-power-down mode (0.3 microampere) between conversions and use the /CONVST signal to wake the part only for acquisition windows. Estimated wake-up time is 1 microsecond from deep-power-down to active conversion, depending on AVDD bypass sizing.

Route the analog input traces on a dedicated analog inner layer with a guard ground plane, and keep SCLK traces away from the analog inputs by at least 5 trace widths. TI's datasheet strongly recommends a single continuous analog ground plane under the ADC with a star connection to the digital return at the AVSS pin. Place a low-ESR 0.1 microfarad ceramic directly between AVDD and AVSS when using AVDD as the reference, otherwise the SAR sampling clock glints show up in the AC performance. For best thermal performance, route 1 ounce copper pours to both ground pins and the exposed pad (when provided by variant).

Common errors when designing with the ADC141S625 include routing AVDD and DVDD through the same inductor or ferrite, which breaks supply domain separation and injects digital noise into the reference. Ensure that the SPI host's CPHA/CPOL bits match the ADC141S625's SCLK-idle-high / data-on-trailing-edge timing mode; mismatches silently produce all-ones or stuck-at values. Finally, do not exceed the absolute maximum AVDD-to-AVSS rating of 6.5V; hot-plugging a 5V supply with a charged decoupling cap can exceed this and permanently damage the reference buffer. Use a TVS diode such as PESD5V0L1BA on AVDD if hot-plugging is required.
