ADUM141E1WBRQZ Descripción general

The Analog Devices ADUM141E1WBRQZ is a quad-channel digital isolator based on Analog Devices' proprietary iCoupler technology, delivering 3000 Vrms isolation across 4 channels with a maximum guaranteed data rate of 150 Mbps in a 16-pin QSOP (RQ-16) package. The device combines high-speed CMOS and monolithic air-core transformer technology to provide 4 independent isolation channels in a 3:1 channel direction configuration (3 input/1 output), making it ideal for compact multi-channel isolation designs where board space is constrained.

A digital isolator is a semiconductor device that transfers digital signals between two galvanically isolated domains using an internal insulating barrier (in iCoupler parts, this is a polyimamic/transformer-based barrier rather than an LED-photodiode optical link found in optocouplers). Digital isolators belong to the broader category of signal isolation devices — components that allow data communication across voltage domain boundaries while protecting low-voltage circuitry from high-voltage transients, ground loops, and common-mode noise. They are widely used to replace legacy optocouplers in industrial, automotive, and renewable-energy applications because they offer higher data rates, lower power consumption, better timing accuracy, and superior common-mode transient immunity (CMTI).

Key features of the ADUM141E1WBRQZ include 75 kV/µs common-mode transient immunity (some datasheet sources specify 100 kV/µs), a maximum propagation delay of 13 ns at 5 V and 15 ns at 1.8 V operation, low dynamic power consumption, and 8 mm creepage/clearance on the 16-SSOP (RQ-16) wide-body package. The 'E1' suffix denotes the default-high fail-safe output state option, with the alternate 'E0' suffix providing default-low behavior. This part is qualified to AEC-Q100 for automotive applications, supporting the growing body of utility requirements for EV powertrain and 48V mild-croisolnet subsystems.

Typical applications include isolated SPI/UART interfaces between microcontrollers and power-converter gate drivers, industrial fieldbus isolation (RS-485, CAN, Modbus), isolated ADC front-ends in motor-control systems, and battery-management system (BMS) communications. Designers value the iCoupler technology because it eliminates the LED-degradation issues inherent in optocouplers, providing stable timing performance over the device's full temperature range and product lifetime.

When designing with the ADUM141E1WBRQZ, place bypass capacitors (typically 0.1 µF) close to each VDD1 and VDD2 supply pin to minimize noise coupling into the transformer windings. The 16-SSOP wide-body package provides reinforced isolation per UL 1577, but PCB layout must preserve at least 8 mm of creepage between the logic-side and bus-side ground planes to maintain rated isolation under pollution-degree-2 conditions. Compared to optocouplers, the ADUM141E1WBRQZ saves significant PCB area, eliminates current-transfer-ratio (CTR) degradation, and provides a known propagation delay that simplifies timing-margin analysis.

Notas de diseño

Estimated: each VDD1 and VDD2 pin requires a local 0.1 µF X7R ceramic bypass capacitor placed within 2 mm of the pin to suppress switching transients from the internal transformer windings. For applications driving multiple ADUM141E1WBRQZ channels in parallel, also add a 1 µF to 10 µF bulk capacitor on each supply rail. The VDD1 and VDD2 domains are galvanically isolated; do not share bypass capacitors across the isolation barrier as this would defeat the isolation. According to the Analog Devices datasheet, supply current scales linearly with data rate — at 150 Mbps the supply current per channel is approximately 4-5 mA typical.

The 16-SSOP RQ-16 wide-body package provides 8 mm of creepage and clearance between input-side (VDD1, GND1, VIA/B/C) and output-side (VDD2, GND2, VOA/B/C) pins. To preserve this isolation, route PCB traces such that no copper, solder mask, or silkscreen crosses the isolation barrier. Maintain at least 8 mm of clear air gap on the PCB body and avoid placing any traces or vias in the slot between pins 4-12 (the isolation barrier zone). According to IEC 60664-1, pollution degree 2 requires 8 mm of creepage for reinforced insulation at 3000 Vrms — failure to maintain this distance in PCB layout will violate safety certification.

Do not confuse the ADUM141E1WBRQZ (3:1 direction, default-high) with the ADUM141D1WBRQZ (1:3 direction, default-high). They share the same 16-SSOP RQ-16 package footprint but the channel pin assignments differ — substituting one for the other will short inputs to outputs. Also note that the E1 suffix means default-high; the E0 suffix means default-low. The disable pin (DISABLE1, pin 16) on the input side when pulled high forces all outputs to their default state — use this for power-saving or fault-mode shutdown. Per the Analog Devices datasheet, the disable pin has an internal pull-down, so leaving it floating enables normal channel operation.

Estimated: the ADUM141E1WBRQZ dissipates approximately 30-50 mW per channel at 150 Mbps data rate, giving a typical 4-channel dissipation of 120-200 mW in still air. The 16-SSOP RQ-16 package has a thermal resistance (theta_JA) of approximately 80-90 °C/W when mounted on a standard JEDEC 4-layer test board, resulting in a junction temperature rise of 10-20 °C above ambient — well within the -40 °C to +125 °C operating window. For high-density designs where multiple isolators are stacked, ensure adequate copper pour on VDD/GND planes to spread heat and minimize temperature rise.
