AL5809-100P1-7 Descripción general
A linear LED driver, also called a constant-current regulator (CCR), is a semiconductor device placed in series with an LED string to maintain a steady current despite variations in supply voltage or forward voltage. Within the broader power management hierarchy, a CCR sits below switching LED drivers and DC-DC converters; it trades efficiency for simplicity, EMI-free operation, and the smallest possible footprint. The AL5809 family extends the CCR category into high-voltage applications up to 60 V, supporting long LED chains and offline-referenced lighting.
Key features of the AL5809-100P1-7 include its floating ground design, which permits both high-side and low-side LED chain driving, and a peak voltage tolerance between input and output pins suitable for offline rectified supplies. The PowerDI-123 package offers an industry-leading thermal resistance for a 2-pin device, enabling higher LED currents without excessive junction temperature rise. The driver also includes inherent LED chain protection by virtue of its linear regulation characteristic.
Typical applications include 12 V and 24 V automotive interior and exterior lamps, signage and architectural LED strips, emergency lighting and indicator LEDs, and offline LED bulbs fed by rectified mains. Because the AL5809 has no PWM or enable pin, brightness control is normally achieved by varying the forward voltage or by adding an external MOSFET in series; for PWM dimming, a logic-level FET can be switched at the CCR return path. Designers should verify that (VIN − VLED_total) × ILED does not exceed the package dissipation limit.

Aplicaciones típicas
AL5809-100P1-7 es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Automotive 12V/24V LED Interior Lighting, Architectural and Signage LED Strips, Emergency and Safety Lighting, Offline LED Bulbs (Rectified Mains), Industrial 24V LED Indicators and Panel Lamps, Backlight and Edge-Lit LED Panels.
Automotive 12V/24V LED Interior Lighting
The AL5809-100P1-7 is a strong fit for automotive 12 V and 24 V interior LED strings such as dome lights, map lights, and ambient strips. Its 60 V input range easily covers load-dump transients up to 35 V on a 24 V truck bus, while the 100 mA regulated output directly drives 1–3 high-brightness LEDs in series. The linear CCR topology introduces zero switching EMI, important for AM/FM and keyless-entry receivers in the same vehicle harness. Place the AL5809 in series between the LED anode and the 12 V rail (or between cathode and ground), add a small N-MOSFET in the return path for PWM dimming, and the design is complete with no inductors.

Architectural and Signage LED Strips
Architectural LED strips and signage channels typically chain 3 to 20 high-brightness LEDs at 12 V or 24 V. The AL5809-100P1-7's 100 mA fixed output and 60 V input headroom comfortably drive a 6-LED string at 24 V with 100 mA per segment, maintaining ±5% brightness consistency across the entire run. Its 20 ppm/°C temperature coefficient prevents visible brightness shift across outdoor temperature swings from −40 °C to +85 °C, a major advantage over resistor-limited designs. The PowerDI-123 footprint is small enough to be embedded inside aluminum extrusions, and the floating-ground design supports both common-anode and common-cathode wiring conventions used by sign builders.

Emergency and Safety Lighting
Emergency lighting fixtures must operate reliably from partially-depleted batteries and across wide supply voltages during generator transitions. The AL5809-100P1-7's 2.5 V to 60 V input tolerates lead-acid battery voltages from 6 V (deeply discharged) up to 58 V (48 V telecom backup), keeping the regulated 100 mA constant during the entire discharge curve. Because the CCR is linear, there are no inductors to fail open in a high-vibration ceiling-mount fixture, and no switching noise to interfere with smoke-detector or PIR-sensor electronics sharing the same wiring channel. The MSL-1 PowerDI-123 package also simplifies PCB assembly for high-volume safety-lighting production runs.

Offline LED Bulbs (Rectified Mains)
The AL5809 family was specifically designed to withstand the high peak voltages of rectified 120/230 VAC mains when paired with a suitable dropping resistor or capacitor. The AL5809-100P1-7's floating-ground 60 V input-to-output rating, combined with its CCR topology, allows it to sit in series with a chain of high-Vf LEDs fed directly from a bridge rectifier, eliminating the need for a bulky isolated switching driver. At 100 mA this is best suited to small indicator or decorative bulbs; for general illumination, derate current and LED count. The absence of switching makes the bulb fully compatible with TRIAC dimmers when paired with a suitable active dummy-load circuit.

Industrial 24V LED Indicators and Panel Lamps
Industrial control panels and machine-status indicators must tolerate wide 24 V supply variation, voltage transients from contactor switching, and years of continuous operation. The AL5809-100P1-7's 60 V maximum input comfortably absorbs 24 V bus transients up to the IEC 61131-2 industrial immunity envelope, while the linear regulation means there is no EMI to disrupt nearby analog sensor signal conditioning. The 100 mA regulated output is ideal for driving a single 1 W, 3 W, or chain of mid-power LEDs from a 24 V PLC output. The PowerDI-123 footprint allows the CCR to be placed directly behind the LED on the same small indicator PCB.

Backlight and Edge-Lit LED Panels
Edge-lit LCD panels, signage light boxes, and gaming-keyboard backlights require dozens of white LEDs uniformly lit from a single constant-current source. The AL5809-100P1-7's tight ±5% current accuracy and 20 ppm/°C stability keep brightness uniform across the panel, eliminating the hot-spots common with resistor-limited chains. Designers can place multiple AL5809-100P1-7s in parallel branches of an LED array, with each branch receiving its own 100 mA regulation independent of the others. The CCR's lack of switching ripple is critical for LCD panels where any ripple couples through the backlight into the displayed image as faint horizontal bands.

Notas de diseño
Power dissipation in the AL5809-100P1-7 equals (VIN − VLED_total) × ILED. For a 24 V supply driving three white LEDs (≈9 V total Vf) at 100 mA, dissipation is (24−9)×0.1 = 1.5 W. Per the Diodes AL5809 datasheet, the PowerDI-123 package offers an industry-leading thermal resistance for a 2-pin device, but designers should still provide 50–100 mm² of 2 oz copper pour under the cathode pad to keep junction temperature below 125 °C. Estimated θJA with recommended PCB footprint is approximately 80 °C/W, so 1.5 W yields a 120 °C temperature rise above 25 °C ambient - acceptable at room temperature but derate current by 25% at 85 °C ambient.
Use the PowerDI-123 recommended land pattern from the Diodes AL5809 datasheet - the exposed cathode pad (pin 2) is the primary thermal path and must be soldered to a sufficiently large copper pour. For low-side drive, the input pin (1) goes to the LED string cathode and pin 2 (cathode) goes to ground; reverse these for high-side drive. Reversed polarity will permanently damage the device. Add a 0.1 µF ceramic bypass capacitor across the LED string if the wiring harness exceeds 50 mm, to suppress transient voltage ringing during PWM dimming.
Do not parallel two AL5809-100P1-7 devices to obtain 200 mA - CCRs do not current-share because each will fight for the lowest forward-voltage drop. Use two separate LED branches instead. Do not exceed the 60 V input-to-output floating rating, even during transient spikes - add a TVS clamp such as the SMAJ58A on the input rail if the supply is inductive. Per the Diodes AL5809 datasheet, the device is MSL-1, so no moisture-barrier bag handling is needed, simplifying kitting for high-frequency designs.
